GametypeUT Capture the Flag

File Version1.00
File Size3.18 mb

Map DescriptionMy very 1st CTF map ever. It has a factory style... uhm yes its brown and stuff but I used Hources factory texture and it's the best one around IMO and it happen to be brown. The map is pretty small and good for 1on1 fights but could also be very fun with 8 players. It's the 1st time I used botpath so don't expect too much of it. There is a redeemer in the middle of the map... Bots can't get it but that shouldn't matter because bots can't handle that mighty weapon anyway... nuff said... have fun !!!

Fearsome? Not very. Aside from the fact that I find playing CTF 1-on-1 extremely pointless (95% of CTF gamplay is team tactics IMO), this little map is okay I guess. Visually it's a bit bland and has a dull, quakeish color scheme, but I've seen worse. Layout and architecture is standard fare, nothing really imaginative but nothing that strikes you as exceptionally bad either. I can live with those facts, but not the following drawbacks:

* Too dark! I had to increase the brightness several notches to be able to navigate the map.

* The flag bases (i.e. the platforms the flags stand on) are too high! You have to jump up on them, which is a little awkward.

* Too many crates! I can appreciate your adding some cover outside the bases, but why did it have to be crates?

* The bot(s) behave oddly; sometimes they seem to get lost in the lower area and you can score a few times at your leisure. To be fair though, you did mention bot issues in the readme.

All in all, this map feels like a big shrug. It's good enough not to annoy me, but still not good enough to make me want to play it again. Had it been bigger and suitable for more players, my score would have been slightly higher.

Edit: Um, I really hope you're addressing mutantX and not me, Corey...

I did my best to be fair. Your map has issues which is reflected in the score I gave it, so in my case you can hardly talk about "for no reason". That said, I think you made a decent CTF map considering you haven't made one before... I'd like to see you try your hands on a bigger (and brighter ;)) map next time.

I normally make BT maps so I like jumping -- Well, I like beer but I don't make maps full of bottles and glasses, do I? Ergo: if you make maps only for yourself, don't release them. If you do intend to release them, you'll have to start listening to what other people like and don't like if you want to get good scores.

Finally, pay no attention to human refuse like mutantX. I know, it sucks that his score will lower the map's overall score (and I was tempted to raise mine to compensate, but that'd just be silly). All you can do is ignore the trolls and listen to the constructive criticism you get.

Edit 2: My brightness level is 6/10, I have a GeForce4 MX440 and I'm running v. 3.1 of Chris Dohnal's OpenGL renderer. 90% of all maps I try look fine at that brightness level, which ought to indicate that it's your system that's too bright. What you can do is look at the original Epic UT maps and try to give your maps roughly the same brightness. But I know, it's hard. My latest map turned out a bit too dark as well.

I appretiate giving your opinion but did you have to give me such low score for no reason??

I totally understand if you think this is a piece of crap hanging togheter with an awsome texture but...

- I really didn't make a normal CTF before so I don't know all the details that make a map good.

- I normally make BT maps so I like jumping.

EDIT:

but what I don't really understand is that you think the map isn't bright enough... At my pc it's just fine.
ok you might have confugrated an other brightness but how can i know how bright you have it??

This map has lots of flaws, but it also has solid brushwork and decent texturing. As a first ctf-map, it's pretty good, but if you said this took three days, i suggest you to spend more time on your maps next time.
As for things you should think of; more color in the ambient light, and not only zonelight. - Bigger, more floorplans and more routes to the flag. gl ;)
