Shield Gun Pack II by Jos 'Sjosz' Hendriks

You can find the original SG mappack by Slainchild with coding by Catdaemon and my review for it, here http://nalicity.beyondunreal.com/map_hub.php?mid=8248

If you have read my review for the first pack, you will know that I felt that the gameplay rocked hard, but the levels for it, wheren’t up to scratch. This is where Sjosz comes in, with 4 new maps, built for SG gameplay with great visuals and interesting twists on the gamestyle. Here goes.

The shield gun has been modified so that you cannot hurt yourself with it. Now, the basic idea of SG is to push your opponents into whatever hazard is nearby. Now, I liked the concept, and I found it a lot of fun to play, but I understand that many people will not. So just keep that in mind while reading the review.

DM-SG-Cenotaph

What can I say about this map?
Well for starters is visually impressive. Nice ambience to the map, interesting theme. Good brushwork, nice use of sounds, for example, the triggered wood creak when you walk in certain areas.

I really liked the way that instead of just floating on top of the water, Sjosz has put in some extra effort to make the map look nice under the water, gives the map that extra sense of depth. Although, perhaps it would have been better had the water been transparent.

My only other complaint about this one, is I feel, that the sky seems too bright.

Gameplay wise, its good, fun SG fragging, nothing too special with the gameplay, you just gotta push your opponents into the sea, and not get pushed off yourself. Bots do well here which is great to see.

DM-SG-Frozen

Cool map, a winter theme, the ruined castle type things in the background reminded me of an ONS map, but not being an ONS fan, I’m afraid I can’t remember the name, feel free to point it out though :-)

Once again, the visuals are great. The falling snow is a cool effect, and more importantly, it doesn’t lag the game.

Sjosz has made an interesting twist to the gameplay here, the map is an O shape, with ways to push your opponents off either side, which makes the map a little more harder to play, but a lot more fun.

One thing I did notice on this map, was that when you jumped into the water yourself, the deathmessage was “Icedancer left a small crater” which didn’t seem to appropriate, the deathmessage when others killed you was suitable though.

DM-SG-Grinder

I think this has to be my favourite out of the pack. It’s a cool choice of theme, the texturing is done well, and really adds to the grim theme of the map. If you gaze upwards towards the ceiling, you will see meathooks and bloody carcasses hanging down. The pools of blood behind each grinder where also a great effect as well as the blood dripping from the roof.

Once again, the deathmessages didn’t seem right, which is a pity.

The gameplay again in this map was something different, either push your opponent into one of the grinders at the side, or the big one in the middle, surprisingly, this one proved quite a hard map to do, with bots anyway, I found that a lot of the time they would end up in one of the corners pushing each other back and forth there. Gameplay was a bit of a letdown, despite having the best visuals in the pack

DM-SG-Minefield

Now despite using 450 static meshes, of which most are trees, the map seemed to run fine. The map, as with all of them in this pack has great visuals, and a cool theme.

Gameplay again was interesting, there are 2 ways to kill your opponent, either push him into the minefield, or push them into the fire, they will only take 25 or so damage from the fire, but it can sometimes be easier to knock them into the fire a few times than build up a big push into the minefield. Another cool thing about the gameplay in this map, is that you don’t really have any idea of where the minefield actually starts, sure, its somewhere past the signs, but you can’t tell for sure.

The death message once again didn’t seem right for when your opponents kill you.

The death effect was cool, the mines where a good choice, rather than just the usual push into slime/lava/big uber spinny bladey thingys especially as theres a nice cloud of dust and a few chunks of earth go flying, as well as your unlucky opponents body ;)

It’s a great mappack, and gives SG the maps it deserve, because lets face it, it’s a cool concept. If you are looking for something new, then you’ve found it :)
People that know UT1 very well, will find it similar to the HammerTime Mod, but without the annoying topdown view. Oh – and apologies to Sjosz for taking so long to do this!

No big on taking your time, that always proves to be the best thing to do anyways :)
I never thought it would get a 7, thanks a lot for the review. And I believe the ONS map would be Dria ;)

The deathmessages were out of my league really, couldn't code custom death messages myself, nor could I find someone who wanted to, believe me, I tried ;)

Funny, I did this same thing a while back but decided not to release it because I found the gameplay to be lame and unskilled.

nice pack
The gameplay is pretty funny although it gets boring soon. The maps look ok, no master pieces but they are all desent. The bots work ok, they suicide sometimes though.

Overall its fun to play for a while and its kind of original.
