DOM-gl-fluentdeathsection2004 by Green Loves

Well, apart from a rather uncreative map name, this map could be just what you are looking for…

I like DOM, it’s my favourite mode in UT2004, there are some great maps out there for it, and this is one of them.

If you want your daily dose of visuals, Green Loves’ got em for ya. You are in some type of industrial themed place, but unlike most maps that go in for an industrial style, this map doesn’t forget to add moss and patches of grass growing on the soil areas. The steam rising up from the pipes was a nice effect, and was consistent throughout the map, it doesn’t just appear in one area, and then when you get to another part of the map which has the same sort of thing, disappear. If you have time to take a rest and look through the vents in the floor, you will see that Green Love has taken the time to create an interesting underground area. But I should warn you, don’t look down for too long, the AI is pretty good, not good enough to beat a camping flak monkey like Ice, but still pretty good (Note to self – Perhaps its time to leave the novice bots alone now Ice, a higher skill perhaps? ). The fog used in the map, gives it a hazy feel, and gives the map that slight touch, to make it even more pleasant to look at. Texturing was pretty good, a few very slight misalignments on the walls, but not noticeable unless you are really looking hard. Lighting is unfortunately where this map falls down, it’s mostly the same all the way around, such that it ends up looking very bland. The map is bright enough so that gameplay is good, and not too bright, but everyone needs the odd dark corner now and again. There are light sources, which is nice, though not everywhere, some areas are lit, when there are no lights or windows nearby.

The map has some nice sound effects, everytime you go near the pipes, you hear them buzzing away to themselves

The map makes good use of static meshes, a lot of them in fact, yet not so many that your computer is lagged to pieces, and not that that means that brushes are used very little, the brushes used are mostly pretty basic, squares, for the rooms, which are then built up into great detail using the static meshes. The terrain, although you see very little of it, is great. It works really well to create an awesome feel for the map. The map has been zoned well, so your FPS should be ok. No BSP defects or any of that type of stuff, all working orderly.

One area where this map is lacking, is movers, there are none, now the gameplay is great, and I will say more about that in a moment, but I think that adding a few movers, even if just for decorative purposes (say a mechanical claw moving around up on the roof).

The map has brilliant flow, it’s a relatively small, fast paced map, that will leave you screaming for more. The weapon placement is great, and suits the map well. There are only 8 player starts, making the map best suited to 4v4 at maximum, unless you want telefragging at the start. The AI as I said before, is pretty good, it’s not brilliant, but the bots work, and they will defend and attack. The DOM monitor screens that show which team has which control point, are, from what I felt when I played it, ineffective, they are positioned so that most of the time, you miss them, as you are to busy running towards to control point, to look at the screen on the wall. However, they do add to the decorative feel of the map.

This has to be one of the best DOM maps I have played, it’s got the looks, and its got the game. It’s not for people who want to camp though, or people who want to take it slow, this map will rush you off your feet, and then frag you before you get back up again

I would have scored this much higher, but it has some issues:
1)point 1 removed

2) lighting. It's just too consistent and bright(not to the point of overbright). Some variation in brightness and colour would add a lot.

Those points made, the map itself is very nicely done with good flow and good visuals

Recommended Download.

Edit: Doh! you are correct Manticore, DOM does work correctly, as long as the Map is properly extracted out from file first. That happens often enough one would think one would have learned that by now! :D

No problems with DOM points here.

Mmhmm... :( Where is the ShockRifle???
Good DOM map, I liked the size, not too big, but the layout is too simple, and symetrical (I want more assymetrical DOM, where is it?). The placement of the DOM points doesn't work too bad in such cramped zones, but it could have been better... Visuals are OK and I agree the lighting could have been better... Framerates dropped a bit sometimes but the map is still playable and fun...
