i like the oldschool skybox along with the little nali houses. unreal 1 was the shiz, so graphics get a big fat 10. gameplay is well planned and suited for somewhat large teams. there are no true seperate routes however, as it is a simple solid terrain with the map piled on top of it. luckily the many static meshes around provide a bit of cover.
graphics 10 + gameplay 7 = 9 - 3pt fps penalty = 6

It's true that the fps is somewhat lower than the average map.

Keep making oldschool Unreal 1 style maps (conversions would be cool). I'm working on making many maps based on old Unreal style maps. I'm also going to use the large map size of the Na Pali valleys for Onslaught and VCTF. Only problem with the map is the trees kinda take away the old Unreal feel. The Aborea static meshes with the certain palm tree work better. Nice map.

The Visuals. The mountainous terrain, Nali hamlets and sudden dropoffs at the map edges give Valarna a very distinctive character; from a visual standpoint, it's an elegant, well-designed map with a lot going for it.
The Flow. Gameplay is fluid throughout; weapon placement, vehicle allocation and node locations are just about right. The level's layout means Raptors play a more dominant role than usual; the hilly 'nooks' where each side's secondary nodes are contained lend themselves to some interesting defensive/offensive strategies. On the whole, the layout is focused enough to keep the action moving at a steady clip, while still leaving enough room open for flanking manuevers.
THE BAD
Bot Behaviour. I've run 12 offline games on this map in the last two days, and two things happened virtually every time:
(1) About halfway through the match, the bots near the power core start forming up into little 'squads' at the bottom of the hill separating the base from the nearest two nodes, and stand around doing nothing. Nothing at all.
(2) A bot driver takes the Hellbender near the power core and ends up driving it straight into the junk surrounding the main base. As a result, it becomes stuck in the terrain and can't be shifted for love or money.
Bot behaviour in general is a tad erratic, but these two issues seriously sour offline play.
THE VERDICT
If the bot issues were addressed, I'd have no hesitation in awarding this one a '9'; of the ONS maps included in the Community Bonus Pack, it's definitely one of the standouts. Well worth the download, even with its problems.
