Imagine this! A map that pleases both mappers and gamers alike!
Achilles has no fatal flaw; it is one of the finest maps created for UT2004. It blends amazing visuals with gameplay that is wonderfully flowing and entices you to keep playing.

Aesthetically, it's similar to Albatross, but manages to stay fresh through its scale and use of meshes. It creates the idea of a large overgrown temple well. There isn't much to say, to be honest. It's not overly decorated, it doesn’t get in your way, and yet it is far from bland. The use of vines and foliage saves the walls from ever becoming monotonous. The lighting is very nice too; cool blues and warm yellows mixing well and creating what has become the standard UT2004 contrast themes. There are several bursts of light piercing the gloomy shadows of the lower levels, what seems very expertly produced and is milked all the way.

Gameplay is the maps focal point, and it doesn’t disappoint. It's a fairly large Deathmatch arena, suitable for a nice sized team game. The z-axis utilised here is very good and reminds me of how mappers used to map for UT in that they were not afraid to have open areas with about six different ways of passing through the room. Soma's maps remind me a little of Faceless in that they are epic, grand and play fantastically.
The item placement is great too. Your powerful weapons are placed low in open positions, screaming out for you to grab them however offering a great deal of danger. It forces you to move around the level and this is without a doubt a good thing. New mappers should look at this and take from it, as its a subtle touch that improves the gameplay of your map no end.

So, it's a short review. Thats because there are no real problems. Theres no strain on FPS, no irritating snags. It looks clean cut, well crafted and detailed. It plays very well.

So... what are you waiting for? Download it if you havn't already!

Great map for some intense hunter/prey dueling, or 2on2 type action! The theme's been beaten to death but gameplay makes up for it here in spades.

Nov3 Soma:Probably hasn't been reviewed as we can assume it's good since it was in the CBP2. ;)

Best map in CPB2 by far. Excellent pretty much everything.

Seems like the author decided: "I am going to make the best 1-on-1 map ever!" and as such, overshot and confused the matter.

I like having room to move, but there's too much room in total. Lots of nice 'set-pieces' which provide interesting gameplay, but again there's just too much. Enough for a whole other map.

Add that to the lack of original visual merit, and I'm afraid I don't think it worthy of an especially high score.

Imho this is one of the best 1on1 maps, it ROCKS!

Well I just love these ancient type DM levels. This one has nice flow, lots of z-axis, is not too cluttered with static meshes and there is lots of room to move. It really looks nice IMO and the construction is reasonably solid although I did notice some texture mis-alignments but that is only a minor flaw. I highly recommend giving this one a whirl with 4 players.

wooooooooooooooow!!!! i got this map with the full cbp2 part 1, [yeah, with 56k! ten hours!!] and i wasnt dissappointed.

this map is one of my favourites, great flow, amazing lightting and good item placement. although i found the playercount a little low, i normally like to play with about 5 bots.

Now this map is one of the better ones, from cbp.
Lighting has the "sunlight" but doesnt make your eye water, due to good lighting near the ground.
It has an actual playable layout ,unlike alot of the other cbp dm maps and the meshes and or looks, also blend in to create an excelent map.
This mapper seems to make levels the way it's meant with new unreal engine, damn nice mapping man.

ADD--I's cool Nali reviewd this level, and actualy like somthing that I think the ut2004 3d engine can do without killing a map with stuff.

One of the best DMs ever. Visuals are impressive and the games are always intense with lots of Z action and connectivity. Item placement is very nice and it is one of the few maps that you don't have to run very far to pick up a weapon. Nearly perfect in all regards. I'm having a hard time not giving this map a ten. But no map is a ten right? 9.5 it is then. Great work. I hope you have more up your sleeve.

Great theme and flow, and the bots play a good match! One of the better CBP2 maps. By the way, Soma, I reviewed this map over at Insite ( so you might wanna read what I had to say. :-)

I'm more torn between a 7.5 or an 8. I'm not sure what it is, but it just doesn't do it all for me. It's a great map and all, as Shadowlurker pointed out, just doesn't fit me or something. Bah, I'm just crazy anyways; I really just wanted to post a comment...

- Perfect visuals & ambience. I like especially the use of Sunlight.
- Very good layout & item placement.
- Quite good FPS.

Not good:
- I played it with bots. Most of the battles take place in the Shock rifle & Minigun rooms. I rarely see the bots in the Flak/Bio/Linkgun zones.

Awesome map. My favourite one for 3-4 players :)

I, as usual lately, haven't tested the bots. But on this level I really don't need to. Even if they just stood there and did nothing, I would still have fun just walking around and enjoying the level. I actually have some shots of this as my wallpaper for study and inspirational purposes. I think I even e-mailed the author for some pointers modelling-wise. Or more accurately, how these models were textured so well. Not very many folks know how much time and effort you have to put into even the simplest model in Max, and this is increased drastically with models such as the ones found here. My only complaint is the skybox, and the lamps. The lamps aren't very convincing as light sources and the skybox just looks weird. Other than that this level is perfect, bots or no, so I'm giving it a 9.
