Icarus, the legend, the map, the review.

Ons-Icarus takes its name from the legend of Icarus, the son of a inventor who is given wings of wax and feathers to escape an island. Icarus doesn't heed his father's warnings to stay away from the sun has his wings melt and plummets to the sea. More of that in antiquity and the readme. SO goes Icarus towers, only over budget and under engineered is sold to the Liandri, same old story.

The real story behind ONS-Icarus is more interesting. Perhaps started as a commissioned work by Epic (good enough to be retail IMHO), or prospectus resume, Icarus was the first community made onslaught map to be featured at NaliCity, for that matter anywhere on the web. Solidly constructed, unlike its namesake, it still shows up on servers today almost a year later. This map from the mapper down-under has staying power. Unlike numerous terrain based maps that soon would populate our HD's.

The premise is simple, take the underlying theme of BR-Skyline (you know, the map that smacks yo-ass in the tournament) and turn it into a full scale onslaught map, complete with all your favorite vehicles, and all the rest of the toys in the box. Oh yea, and throw in a couple meshes that fill some gaps but, pardon the pun, mesh with the retail.

Well, to do that, you need to add scope, as in more room, and that means some liberal frame saving distance-view fog. Also more Z, add ramps and more platforms. Create some connectivity, ahhh... jump ramps for wheeled vehicles and purpose objectives for Raptors (like the Painter and the U-Damage). Offset the dominance of flying vehicles by burying one of the central nodes inside the skyscraper and deligating the Raptor to keeping the land-locked Leviathan off the backs of your team mates for the final push.

Bot support is in the forefront of new unreal items, such as flying path nodes. Bots do their stuff in this map, but as all onslaught maps they really shine with the human element. Organized team attacks can rapidly sway the entire game in this map. Each node has it's own unique exploits, like parking your tank in the lower central node, or attacking the outer node from the abandoned upper corridor. At the same time, the mapper preserving frameratres, this is a multi-player gametype after all. Better add some very large anti-portals.

What I like best about ONS-Icarus is that it works, on many levels. The name ties into the theme and draws players into the concept. The map is built to the gametype rather than one being forced upon it. The author attempts balance, from the lonely bot on foot to the human in the Leviathan, with only geometry as his tools. Also is included new fun factors, like daredevil jumps and an environment perfect for ariel combat, even calling a bombing strike adds an element of suprise.

So with no lack of AWE, excellent quality of BUILD and a CAST that delivers the gametype in full, ONS-ICarus is a winner and deserves full marks! I wish the AI were better, but really that's a game problem not a map problem and I'am not making excuses for a map that needs none, only for a review that should have been made before the concensus was out. If you haven't downloaded this map, you probably haven't been playing onslaught, so do yourself a favor and do it now and save some server the bandwidth for players.

Hehe, at first glance it looked a bit "not special", but then I noticed that the author was Plutonic. I downloaded it right away :) But haven't tested yet.

It seems I have to give a score for it (no option to no score anymore), so I give 8. Just so that it draws attention. But after I've tested it I change if necessary.

Awesome map, great gameplay, amazing theme, only got stuck once due to bsp, and the bots could be smarter. I raised my score to 10 just to offset some of the lame scores.

Dude, the all caps thing is kinda stupid, and that is kinda a stupid question too. Do you really think they would include the entire game in the demo? If they did why would they even release the game in the first place?

Anyway, its a pretty cool map. It puts an interesting spin on a gametype I could never have seen happening on top of a building.

Nice map. Well designed and plays great. Plenty of ramps to jump off - yeeehaw!

Shame the rating is spoiled by people who haven't even got the game yet. Wait till you've played the map dickheads - duh!

Rating between 6 and 7... a nice map, a good looking map, but all sorts of bugs abound. Clipping problems with the edges of platforms and vehicles where vehicles just get stuck, collision areas that you can get through and have to suicide, being able to walk quite a far bit off of some platforms due to the same collision errors, bot issues galore (like a bunch of them chilling in the Leviathan trying to drive it while just bumping against the barrier on the platform), all sorts of other weird collision problems, etc.

...which is a shame, since otherwise the map is polished and full of ingenious ideas. These bugs are smooth gameplay showstoppers that just irritated me and my LAN-mates. Sorry. :(

The map is a saint. It's one of the first downloads and man, is it a great way to take off with the start of the tight game. Thanx for the fun!

One has to wonder how the rating on the front page could possible be 10. No review and user comment scores don't justify a 10.

Besides as Luquado mentioned the map is quite literally riddled with collision errors.

A good map. Interesting use of the levi for defense only. I'm not sure I like the fact that the middle nodes are so exposed. It makes it very hard to capture them long enough to move on to the next nodes. I found the map very complex with multiple levels and ways to and from most spots. I'm not sure I've even seen the whole map which is something I like.

Made props to Plutonic as always though for setting the ONS standard in mapping.

Brilliant map, a bit on the small side considering it's Onslaught, but it rocks! Leviathan for defense only, little ramps to 'daredevil' yourself to other platforms. Great stuff!!!!!

A great map. I havent played with bots yet, mostly just for stunts ;) The only thing I would like more would be one like this, but the gaps would be bigger and no way to make the gap without a vehicle or without full speed, there wouldnt just be a bridge like there is right now. Maybe one day, when im feeling less lazy and more ready to learn, i will learn to do this myself :P

My only complaint: it takes too long to die when you fall off the skyscraper. Otherwise, this is a high quality ONS map.

Excellent map. The Levi for defense is especially innovative, and it can be turned against the defenders in the secondary link setup. The matches are very easy to turn around, and more than once I have been beaten when I had the enemy's core vulnerable, which leads to a very tense and exciting battle. The only thing I don't like is the size of the holes in the floor in the center; sometimes the smaller vehicles will fall through and get stuck.

Honestly, a very solid map. It's my hope that this is just a taste of things to come and that more ONS maps will come out that are designed in unique city settings or sky/spacescrapers like this, and not just more or less empty landscape.

Definately a very unique, creative idea. While it's not my favorite map, i definately have to give points for style, execution, and playability and in that sense it's nicely done. It can be a little easy to drive off the sides sometimes, but if youre a good driver, it shouldnt be a problem.

This is a great map. The only real flaw is that the bots tend to get vehicles stuck in holes or edges and when this happens they stay in the vehicle doing nothing until they etiher die or you use voice commands to tell them to "get out" or "suicide" . Lots of fun, a definite keeper.

I hate it :) but I just can't seem to stop playing it. Maybe I should say I hate my play on it. I really suck with the vehicles here and resort to foot soldier warfare.

Levi imo is wasted and only serves as a spam device until destroyed by a raptor. Layout and nodes are nicely done the the design, mesh, textures and lighting are top notch.

An epic quality map imo.

THE GOOD:

A Fresh Theme. Icarus adds a new twist to the typical Onslaught map by setting its objectives in the middle of a half-abandoned highrise. Gameplay follows suit; rather than being one unbroken whole, Icarus is composed of several interconnected structures separated by mile-deep abysses. Naturally, careful driving is the order of the day.

Polished Visuals. As one might expect from a Plutonic effort, Icarus is attractive stuff, fitting in nicely among the retail maps. The architecture is generally a pleasure to look at; no more so than when you're navigating over the buildings in a Raptor in search of air-to-air kills.

THE BAD:

The Ramps. Trying to use a ramp in ONS-Icarus is a little like playing Russian Roulette; vehicles tend to get stuck at the edges with distressing regularity, leaving the driver with no choice but to abandon them. As a result, it's often safer to ignore the ramps entirely, robbing the map of one of its primary appeals.

The Leviathans. With nowhere to go, the map's two Leviathans are nothing more than glorified turret emplacements, annihilating everything in the area of the power cores until Raptor fire finally shuts them up. Excising them from the map wouldn't have hurt playability in any significant way.

Botplay. Bots seem a tad confused in places, abandoning vehicles at odd junctures; similarly, their ability to navigate the intricate turns required to get around the central section isn't always pristine.

THE VERDICT:

Good, but not great Onslaught effort. Ultimate playability is compromised by a few errors.

great detail, spectular botpathing, one prob: it gets SUPER JERKY when i look at the middle building and im flying :(
great map, though!

0.5 off for the sucky performance, im able to play Torlan with ALL OF MY DETAIL CRANKED, i had to turn it all to LOWEST, and i still got sucky performance when I look at the middle building and im flying. my im, and virus scan, and everything was closed, i had just rebooted, mabye a few antiportals in the upper section of the central tower.

oh, boy. i just ranted over 1/2 point! :P
im looking forward to furture releases from this author, just remember the anti portals; the more the merrier!

The levithan placement was a good idea but moving around the map with vehicles was too hard. That choke point node is too close to the base and too hard to defend. I don't see what the big deal about this one is. I never had fun playing it.
