| | File Name | dm-1on1-idrus.zip | Author | E.T | Gametype | UT2k3 Deathmatch | Date Added | 03-06-2004 | File Version | 1.00 | File Size | 6.22 mb | Player Count | 1on1 | Map Description | A small 1on1 industrial map set in some kind of mine. Ill not say that I like this map... the theme isn't well executed and the overall visuals are not good and unoriginal , but I tried to have good gameplay with a lot of z-axis, good flow, connectivity...blablabla.
**An updated version for UT2004 wich is called DM-1on1-Idrus-due is available in the 1on1 pack made by Strogg, Hourences, Tonnberry and... me ;)

Small map (1on1) set in a, you're never going to guess it, industrial type of building !
Lets jump right in. Is the floorplan and gameplay original ? No Does it work ? Yes Is the theme original ? Nop Does it work ? Sure Are the visuals original ? Not by far Are they solid and looking good ? Yes Do I like it ? Yes!
I'm not saying I'll always like a map that has unoriginal theme and floorplan and whatever else, but this one I do like. It pulls off well and the whole map feels solid and has cool stuff in. The map just screams "Hi I'm a German map" and if you want to use Alpu as a definition for those typical maps then yes it could have been Alpu3 because it looks a lot like it. Including the color choices for most lights and the texturing. Even the architecture was Richrig like and had lots of typical curved and vertex edited like elements. But at the end, it works ! And it feels solid ! Something very few maps can say these days. As said, a lot of the architecture feels very much like some UT1 DM map styled stuff. Same goes for the lighting, it's made up out of lots of blue and some orange, and yes you've seen that before but it's un discussable still one of the strongest and best lighting schemes you can pick. Texturing is, you can guess it, Richrig with bricks. The bricktexture is handpainted I think, and it looks fine for that, bricks are hard to do. On one hand it styles the map a bit, but on the other hand it makes the whole map look cartoon'ish and fake. All custom textures also lack detailtextures, shame on you. Rest of texturing was fine, 'map also has two caves and they have a nice vertexblended material. The main room I like particularly at one spot. I like it because of some plants I see. They create an interesting contrast between orange and blue lighting and green plant textures. Even though the plants are really small it already lives up a lot more. If the whole map had a lot more influence from plants and thus a lot more influence from the green color in the composition it could have looked far more impressive and also more original I think. The sky has a cool big blue erm "thing" in it, a sun or whatever, and that was cool, but the two other things in the skybox I highly dislike. They do not fit. The big blue purple nebula thing and the planet have a terrible non fitting color and placement. Oh did I already said the map even has red lights ? Though no crates.
Gameplay is typical, with lots of ramps, some elevators, etc. It also has some grates in the floor at some spots and each elevator even makes a different sound, so you can track down your enemy easier. It also has some triggers that trigger a sound when you walk on a certain thing, like a metal grate. Works great though. As for the rest, it also has health vials on ramps, and the flow of the map itself is good with lots of connections and different floors. It also has lots of blocking volumes and you can liftjump on a few spots. Some dodge up things would have been nice though.
Now, in recent days I reviewed two decent maps, if the community can keep this up we might get back to the days from UT1 when good maps were released a lot more frequently and were the overall quality level was far higher then the current "any thing with lots of prefabs and where I can see my enemy because of zonelight is a good map".
Map is cool, map is solid, and it also feels very complete, lots of small things were done correctly. Almost every time I think of something that could have been forgotten it seems to be there. The only thing is that it's a little unoriginal, if it were more original I would have rated it a little higher. None the less, even while the author doesn't seem to love his own map, it's a cool, get it!

| Obi-Wan 03-11-2004 04:56 AM MST | Rating: 9 | | great flow, smooth graphics, good lighting and a good use of sound effects make this map a keeper.. only complaint is the fact that I couldn't liftjump every lift....and I don't care about the theme, as long as it's a good map
| Player 03-08-2004 12:04 PM MST | Rating: 6 | | 6.5 A decent map all around and certainly better than the usual run of the mill UT2k3 map, but nothing special. Lighting and sound are above average, everything else is just average. It's the kind of map most players will play once or twice and then forget about.
| E.T 03-08-2004 11:54 AM MST | | thx for the review
| darth_weasel 03-08-2004 08:04 PM MST | Rating: 8 | | solid in all ways. little big for just 2players though perhaps. 8.5 is right
| Fliegenklatsche 03-10-2004 02:13 PM MST | Rating: 9 | | It is indeed a very nice map, only a little bit too big for 1on1. In fact this doesn't matter because you can play it with more than 2 players.
| Homeslice 04-06-2004 10:51 AM MDT | | Great-looking map, I can see. I would officially have comments for you, though, if this map didn't crash out the game on me, rendering it unplayable. Sorry. :-(
| Aggressor 03-20-2004 06:23 AM MST | Rating: 8 | | Then why don't you leave a neutral score, rather than give it a zero? A map not running on a certain machine might not always be a mapper's fault.
Other than that, it's a solid map. Didn't really blow me, but it's solid in every way.
| Manticore 03-21-2004 02:02 AM MST | Rating: 7 | | Solid gameplay but nothing special.....
Handles 2 0n 2, even 3 on 3....
| yournan 03-22-2004 11:01 AM MST | Rating: 8 | | Excellent map in every department.
Would have been better for 2on2 and not 1on1, takes some time to find your oppoent. Also the areas which had the caves in were clearly duplicated, more variation in these areas would have been nice.
