Map DescriptionEasilly my best work. Was originally going to be a pretty close remake to Deck16 but it ended up very different as I discovered more and more things that I wanted to change about the original (basicly the whole map).
It's much smaller scale than the original, only caters for 2-4 players and the gameplay is extremely different so if you liked deck16 because you liked walking along over-stretched corridors for 10 hours then don't expect quite that :p
Custom particle system, custom music and awesome custom textures by Hourences!

Not another Deck16 conversion you’d say. We’ve seen enough of these conversions! Obscure maps that are called Deck16omfgl337clanedition67 and shouldn’t have ever seen the daylight are scattered around the internet. Servers are endlessly running crappy Deck16 remakes and people just keep playing that darn map. Well, maybe it’s a Deck16 remake, but Deck40 just blows every clone and also the original map (Though that won’t take much ;) ) away with it’s astonishing graphical features. Delete all the obscure remakes and bring on Deck40!

As I said in the intro, the graphical level of this map is astonishing and equal to the UT maps by Hourences and Chicoverde. I’ve never ever seen a terrain so smooth and beautiful as in this map. It’s almost of 2k3 quality. But then again, what’d ya expect from Bot_40? We all know his terrain tutorials by now and I still have to thank him for it :) .
The theme of Deck40 is an Icy cavern mixed with Skaarj influences (Using Hourences l337 HourIceSkaarj.utx texture pack which can also be found in the Xidia map Genome Warriors.) which create a fresh look at the Deck16 theme. There are a couple of new particle effects specially coded for this level, including snow (Which looks cool) and a sort of ground fog thing (Which really enhances the coldness of the level). Due to the quality of the visuals it does have a couple of BSP bugs unfortunately, but it’s a small price to pay ey?
Another part of the map that contributes to creating a cold environment was the lighting. Icy blues, icy oranges (If there’s such a thing?) and whites can be found around the level. Though maybe the environment is all white, the lighting really helps to add some highlights around the level, making it more spectacular than ever.
The choice of textures was fine, it never gets repetitive and everything was aligned well.

Now, onto gameplay. The floorplan is ingenious, and it didn’t remind me that much of Deck16 (Which can only be a good thing, aight?). There are lots of doors and elevators to be found, and due to there quick opening/elevating it never gets in the way of gameplay much. I did found myself running in the same circle over and over again, but that’s probably my problem. I also applaud the polycount of this level. It hardly ever exceeds 300 polygons and yet the visual quality is astounding. The bots play good but they have their issues. First of all, they go everywhere in the level, which is great, but there’s also a little problem. The bots tend to get stuck in and near the elevator shafts which I think is an issue the author should address. The first time a bot got stuck he was just idling in a inlet in the elevator shaft, and I was searching around for horus trying to find him before I was smart enough to push the F5 button to discover where he was. It happened another 2 times in the same match. Just a small issue that can get annoying. The item placement was fine. The shockrifle and the rocketlauncher were a bit to close to eachother, but the special powerups were spaced out enough and the amount of health is sufficiënt.

As expected, the sound doesn’t have shortcomings either. Though maybe it’s not great, the hums, the wind and the drips are sufficiënt. The custom music track is of good quality and fits the map like a glove.

Conclusion: Oh boy, yet once again an 8 for me. I don’t give higher than an 8 unless it’s flawless, but yet, the map has a couple of minor points. I do have to say I like this one a bit better than Knell, which received my previous 8. Once the map grabs you it won’t let go. All the Deck16 lovers, Deck16 haters and god knows who else should have this map on their harddrives. I want to congratulate the author by creating the uttermost compealing Deck16 remake ever. There is simply no remake that comes near this map, and I don’t think there ever will be another one this good. I didn’t like Deck16, but this map just rawks!

Awe: 3.0
Build: 2.5
Cast: 2.5

ADDITIONAL NOTE: The screenshots were made in Direct 3D (I'm sorry, I have a lousy graphics card that doesn't support OpenGL too much), but I've heard that the effect in OpenGL is a lot better :)
So, the screenshots do not represent the actual lighting quality in the map BUT, it still looks nice in D3d now doesn't it? ;)

Yay, finally 3.5 years later I get featured map (even if it was only half featured lol :p)

There are parts which I'm not happy with because in the end, I decided to just rush-off the bits that I hadn't done (otherwise you wouldn't have a map at all by now!)
Mainly stuff like the lighting is old etc. etc. but overall I'm pretty pleased with it. Easilly owns anything I've done before (except for the map I started about a month ago which I lost because of harddrive problems O_o)

Anyways, the main point I want to get accross with making this map is that a remake doesn't have to just be a case of "re-texture everything with some horrible textures, delete/add 2 weapons then add some pathetic sniper-ledge or something useless"
Ok, so it turned out much much more different than the original, but that's prolly a good thing :p

btw sorry about the large download (yes I really did need to include that animated screenshot :p)

Also, got to mention yet again that the lighting is not made for D3D. It's made so it looks good under OpenGL (with proper contrast) so if you are worried that it doesn't have much contrast then that is why :p

Cheers for teh review. Can't believe I got a review at NC the same day I submitted the map ;)

Kudos Bot40.
This level is great.
Im not a fan of deck 16 but I dled this anyway, and I think bot40 is putting himself down by claiming this has anything to do with deck 16 (even if it was at first a remake) because this level is so much better than any deck level I have played and looks fantastic to boot.
Did lag abit (still very playable) and some places are abit to dark.
A must dl imo.

great stuff, by far your best map, cool to see my tex used in another map
this is how a conversion should be done, you take the original concept and ideas of the floorplan and gameplay and you use those to base your new SELFMADE floorplan on, combined with a new or better theme then the original
the archi is really nice on lots of spots and i like the middle big room ceiling area and the lift things but on some places it feels like you lost control of your archi for a moment, feels less solid and more messy on a couple of spots
and the lamps are terrible cubic :)
rest is real nice, real cool idea of that fog, wish i came up with that 2 years ago during ONP :)

Thanks for finishing it Bot :) If it takes glugging tobasco to get you 100% complete then drink more of that hot sauce! Except for the (one) bot problem, they really kick ass, and so does the flow. This map ran fast on my old p3, actually had better numbers than other recent high-detail dm maps, which i thought were pretty damn good. I'm not really surprised by that fact. Technical excellence "." great job :)

Quite good work. BUT!

- Sometimes a little tight for fights.
- what the hell? The cliff where you can die is ****!
It's way too tight!
- Some Lightcontrasts would have been good, but it has
a great athmosphere.
- a path that leads in black area?? Make some lighten
ways that lead out of the map.
- the music sucks.

So, that are the BAD points... lets have a look on the good ones.

- extremely good architecture
- smooth flow even on slow machines
- the map has a great atmosphere
- extended version of Deck16, new areas make sense
- new effects, very good-looking

some good, some bad points... I'm playing it sometimes, but I can't say if this will be a keeper.

=> 6.5

Awesome architecture and atmosphere. I really liked the snowy ridge where the shock rifle and med boxes are. A bit on the dark side (I'm using D3D) and can be a bit difficult to spot members of the blue team. I noticed that the bots liked to stand in one place in a few areas, and there are a couple spots where I got hung up on as well. A 7.5 from me, but I suppose an 8 would be fitting if I was running OpenGL.

--Edit--
Sorry Frieza, I guess I know how to pick the better maps to review for the featured map. ;-p

Excellent, excellent map. Beautiful looking and flows like crazy. Even botmatches are awesome, they'll be all over you even at lower difficulty settings.

Some some small quibbles:
-The Sniper Rifle has no real use on this map. There's no real room for it. Drop it and replace it with another BioRifle or Shock Rifle.
-The framerate is not so good at times, even on high end machines, since the polycount or effects seems to push the poor UT engine too far. I was getting 30FPS in some areas, and that's with a 3Ghz P4 and Radeon 9800XT.
-Make the shield belt a more risky to grab.

Other than that, this is just awesome. If you blew this map up a bit (keeping the same design, just making the hallways longer and everything slightly wider), upgraded textures and polycounts, this would be a 10+ star UT2k3/4 map.

If you love us, you'll make a UT2k4 version.

Wooo-hooo, a near-perfect map! I'm sure you know all about the good here, texturing, layout, ATMOSPHERE, etc, so I'll list my complaints: The cliff that you can fall and die from really does not fit, at all. I find myself avoiding that path all at costs, which limits the flow. Second off, you should have switched up the weapon layout a bit, it's way too easy to get 3 guns in a matter of seconds. All-around Godliness!

Amazing.....
Never see such a good conversion like this one...
Deck 16 was one of my favourite maps, when I would try something out, I like to do this on this original
map

I Saw the screenie first, and I thought: This looks like of one of these Ut2K3 maps, NOT!!!!
I played this puppy, and my conclusion is that everything that makes the map good, are plenty in it
My one sugestion is for the smoke on the base, you could it make more flowed(I don't think I could do
much better)

Gameplay are ok, but I like to play the original more than this one, because Deck16, is legendary
And I think, that if Deck16, doesn't exist, this one would be to

(Í hope you can understand my english, cause I have difficulty with it)

To the author...this map has the best atmosphere I have ever seen...a little too dark 4 really action-paced fraggin`, but thats how it would look like in the real life I guess :) really nice work..

I would have given much more higher score, but there's one thing that is worth pointing out:

The fog if a great addition. In single player it worked well, but in multiplkayer it somehow ate up all CPU. My friend hosted the game (non-dedicated). I have 1700mhz with GF 3, and he had 1000 Mhz with GF 2 or something. Maybe it works better in OpenGL? In every other aspects this level is great! But as the fog ruined our game, I really can't give any higher scores. We will propably test this again when we have time.

Comment to thermma above: You have put your request in at least half a dozen comments sections of maps I have seen.

How about joining the forums here at Nali City or over at Beyond Unreal where there are plenty of people who would be more than willing to answer any question you care to ask about map installation; including where to find map manager software.

I'm no expert but I do no how to install a map and I would be more than happy to help you out if you message me in those forums.

This space should really be used to comment on the maps (or occasionally comment on other peoples' comments!?!). O.k.?

Anyhoo, I never did care for 16, but here we have a very solid map that in truth bears little resemblance to the original. The only resemblance really being that it is an atrium map, that probably started out as one thing (namely, having a closer resemblance to 16) and went through many incarnations to finally arrive at its current state.

Could have done with more stuff outside the big double doors that are cracked. But still a great map. Anyone find the deemer yet?

On that note, this is pure artwork! This is what a remake should look like (if that is, this were a total remake). This is what an original map should look like too! Great theme and gameplay. Flow is a little harsh but that is the only issue for me. I love just about everything, and it was cool (no pun intended) to see a frozen version of an old map. I myself was never too high on Deck 16, but Deck_40 is the way to go here! Good job, man! (Read my Insite review for more of my thoughts.)

Bah, this isn't deck. although some parts can be seen, it's barely worth the deck title. Something more along the lines of "Ice Station" or something.

I didn't download this at first, because I thought it was a Ut2k4 map accidentally thrown in the classic UT section. But when finished reading the review I saw the guy had a better graphics card than I do, I guess.

And when I played it, it was beautiful. A little jerky due to it's size, but that's my own crappy computer's fault. Lovely map. Perhaps a little dark, but it was good.
