DM-Magma is set in a magma controlstation. Whatever that is I don’t know and what the use of a magma controlstation is, is a mystery to me, but that this is a damn cool little map is one thing I’m sure about. A funny thing happened to me while playing this map, and maybe you don’t find this any interesting to hear, but this map somehow reminded me very strongly of my own mapping’style’. Pretty large open spaces, warm lighting, richrig, the architecture.. etc. Anyway, enough of this bullshit, you don’t wanna hear it anyway :)

The overall looks weren’t jawdropping, but they managed to back the theme up. Lots of magma, (which flows everywhere through the facility, maybe a little too much magma), for the magma part, and lots of control panels ,(Lots), for the controlstation part. The architecture was done nicely, lots of trimming, lightsources for the lights, a nice skybox, ramps, small bridges, all just very nice. The ceiling of the map was a bit undecorated, and the magma flowing there did look a bit incredible when there’s a part of the ceiling showing the sky just metres away from that place.

If there’s one thing really good about this map than it would be texturing. All greatly aligned and especially very varied (as far as the richrig pack goes though). Long walls are decorated with more then just 1 texture, trims at the bottom and top, different sorts of pillars using different textures, lightsources, awesome work here.

And it doesn’t stop, the lighting was done very well too. All of them are sourced, reds, yellows, blue’s (Maybe a bit too much blue’s in one corner of the map). It gives the map a ‘heated’ look, and with eyes on the theme I think that fits here perfectly. Only one minor point here, the big strectched lamps that were vertically placed in the walls do not seem to be on.

If I had to choose a second strong point besides texturing it would be botplay. The bots go everywhere, get everything, they even use an impacthammerjump to get to a Damage Amplifier. Your ass gets kicked by them in novice, your ass gets kicked by them in adept, and you can’t kick they’re asses in godlike. Great work!

Item placement was.. OK. The weapons were well balanced. The choice to place a sniper rifle here deserves a mention. In most 1on1 or 2on2 maps it’s not a good thing to have a sniper rifle, but due to the open attitude of this map it’s not a problem at all. Health was plentiful, too plentiful. Too much healthpacks and healthvials in combination with thighpads and armor in a small map is taboo.

And then the flow, not great, not bad, just normal. I don’t think everyone will like the big open space this map basically is, but I didn’t have any problems with it.

We still got one minor point coming up, and that would be.. the sound. The author placed some ambient sounds here, although not too many. The majority of the panels broadcast sounds, but their radius is so small and the sound is so soft that you really have to stand close to it to hear anything. I think the sound volume and radius could really be increased. So do all the other sounds. The magma sounds and the wind blowing from outside are hard to hear. Also I didn’t find the music particurarly fitting. Maybe a bit too weak for hardcore action.

Conclusion: A good map, the looks won’t disturb you or get in your way, the bots will kick your ass and the Damage Amplifier will require all your impacthammering skills to acquire. It was a pleasant experience to play, and it will not dissappear from my maplist soon.

A nice little map. Great visuals, good gameplay, and well-done sounds. The structure is very good because it doesn't let one weapon dominate. Still, it's too small and confined. The health vials are too plentiful, allowing easy domination in 1 on 1. The health vials also make it considerably less dangerous to go for the damage amp, which is too powerful for the small map. Verdict: Pretty good.

EDIT: Frieza, what level of difficulty were you playing on? Even on as low as adept, the bots nail me with the sniper rifle every so often.

That would be my mistake then, I did play on adept but I didnt notice it. I'll correct it right away. Thx for mentioning :)

solid map but feels a little too much like one big subtracted room with ramps added in. tidy map though.

Pretty little map, very nice lighting but could have done with been a bit bigger. Minor gripe : Didnt like the lava on the roof openings, would have prefered to see the sky.

Always was a good map. Had it since last August and not about to delete it. Of all the maps i have on my HD this is quite possible the hardest to win in botmatch.
