DM-1on1-Viridian2003 | | Map Info |
| | File Name | dm-1on1-viridian2003.zip | Author | Bonehed316 | Gametype | UT2k3 Deathmatch | Date Added | 07-06-2003 | File Version | 1.00 | File Size | 4.3 mb | Player Count | 2-6 | Map Description | My first map for UT2003. It's a remake of the origional Viridian Dreams for UT (origional author is cited in the README). The atmosphere has been extended from what the origional was to me. The origional was a bit unbalanced due to the pulse/minigun ammo placement. This remake fixes that and a few other imperfections, and hopefully updates it to the current engine, without overally changing the architecture. Download it and enjoy! :)

In Short: Its a pretty good *shock horror* remake.
I took this request with dread, fearful it would turn out to be a poor remake of a old UT map. Thankfully it turned out to be quite good.
The orginal Viridian, for those who have not had the chance to play it, was a fun playing and simple map. I have enjoyed many a frag in it in times past, and never did I find the map unplayable. It was never the best looking map out there - it had horrible green trim too.
The remake basically follows suite. Retaining the scale and bsp of the original for the most part, the aurthor has done well bringing the map up to speed. He has managed to acheive a atmosphere in the map - something the old map lacked. Lighting has been toned down a lot making the map feel older and a little more easy on the eyes. In the main room as it may as well be called the gaps in the ceiling have emitter based smoke falling, and there are laods of vines hanging around. It gives the effect that this is indeed the same map used in the tornament all those years ago, except with damage and ageing that age brings. It has become overgrown, darker because of the deaths. Texture work is good - it helps make the map feel more up to date, and there are few errors. The annoying green trim remains, but hey - it couldnt be a remake of DM-Viridian if it didnt have green trim.
Viridian has always had solid gameplay. Whilst not the best, it certainly allowed for intense play. The gameplay allows for the player to predict where the opponant was going very well, because the rooms flow into each other so well. It actually reminds me of quake somewhat, and not only because of the jumpads. The map consists of three main room - one has a curved platform, one has some stairs and the other a few jumpads. Theses rooms are connected by either jumping on jumpads or walking up or down ramps. Pretty typical content really, though it works. Item placement has changed from the original, apprently to fix some balance problems with minigun/pulse ammo. Ive never really had any problems with their placement with the old version, but the changes work nethertheless.
The map does what the aurthor wanted it to do - bring a "classic" UT map up to date. The map wasnt exactly Akumas best work back then, but it wsnt bad and was definately one of the better playing maps. The remake is clean, using a few emmiters and decent use of jumpads. It receives a couple of points for that. I have to dock points, however, because the main base of the level isnt the aurthors own. |

| markishome359 07-06-2003 10:43 PM MDT | Rating: 8 | | This is one of the absolute best ports I have ever seen for 2k3. It's far more than a simple port, it keeps the layout and size ratio of the original, but transitions it perfectly into the new engine. Majorly good work!
| SirTahngarth 07-07-2003 01:15 AM MDT | Rating: 6 | | Wasnt really fond of the original, but I have to commend the decent effort to make the map look more like a 2k3 map, with nice use of decorations, etc.
Now try making an original map :) If you dont add a map description (which includes an original mapper credit), its going to go to zilch, however. please credit the original mappers. its their intellectual property after all, you could at least thank them for making it.
| DeRailer 07-07-2003 03:41 AM MDT | Rating: 7 | | This is a good conversion, one of the few I kept for ut2k3 including bollwerk. Good frames, above average lightings. Can't wait to see your own work. :)
| Obi-Wan 07-07-2003 08:54 AM MDT | Rating: 7 | | yahh i like it.. brings up sum' good ol' memories! really nice flow, great lighting!!
| Bonehed316 07-07-2003 11:49 AM MDT | | Thanks a ton guys. I'm glad you all like it. I spent way too long on it, it had better be good. It's not great, but what can I do with UT architecture? So I did as best I could. The origional athor is Rich 'Akuma' Eastwood, and is cited in the readme, and always has been. :) I guess that shows how many people read those, lol. Anyway, great feedback guys, thanks!
