Wether has the kinda gimmick layout that makes the big veins in my penis bulge with Heaven Juice. Sure, it is a “same base” style map, most CTF are, but Bot_40 hurls an interesting twist to it, a kinda gimmick I’ve only seen in far lesser maps that couldn’t carry the idea. This map does, however, and it carries right into your eager lap.

Wether takes place in a brick complex with lots of windows, ramps, and pillars. But the main bit of originality comes in the placement of the flags…they are right next to each other, separated by a glass shield and a few feet of space between the two buildings they reside in. Of course you simply can’t jump through to the other side…you gotta exit the building and run around using a bridge/corridor route or the front doors.

Visually, the map is solid. Sure it is devoid of “leet” detail like randomly placed buckets or strategic wooden planks, but the detail it does include is cool. It makes use of the ever-popular sunset sky that emits some orange glow over the tops of some of the towers, the rest are caught in that unexposed blue haze of the remaining daylight. The Architecture isn’t over the top, but the place doesn’t get boring. Aside from the staircase rooms that lead to the sniper rifles (they are rather bleak in design) the place is finely trimmed (er…you know, with trim) and lighted adequately. No real complaints here.

What did bother me was the sucky A.I. They suck. They are the suckiest bunch of suckers that ever sucked. Actually not really, but they don’t navigate the map as well as they should and they tend to get caught quite often. This blows, because they really would have owned the map otherwise. Another bugger is the lack of entry/exit options…there are limited ways to each base, but since the map isn’t what I’d call large, smaller CTF groups may not mind this…and the availability of the Translocator may just make ends meet.

The Prophet’s Verdict: Quite an adept map by Bot_40, who is a sexy bitch. Though the gameplay bugs really cramp this map’s style. Even with the bugs, the gameplay is decent and the playability factor is great for online games. This map has a very enthusiastic 3rd arm salute from me. Oh…and the music track owns me.

Wow, quite a good map, I really liked it! The theme might have been done before but to me it felt really different, fresh. Bots do really well too, which is good. But it was the lighting that sold me. I love the affect of the sun being cast down, it looks great. maybe you could have added some more colored lighting (red and blue) to break up the interiors whitey-light bluey color. But it is still a great map!

oh P.S You should have worked on your skybox more, it looks pretty scungie when you can see that it is actually a box. hehe

yep, skybox a bit dodgy. other than that a nice map
flow is nice and simple, texture use :))
all i want to add is it could do with some lighting around the flags!

Well the skybox is just the textures that epic made. It's not my fault if epic are too lazy to make their textures line up properly with each other at the edges :p

Guess we need a skySPHERE instead of a skyBOX...

The map...not horrible, but gameplay is rather simplistic.
Bots do their jobs, no snags or other nonsense, just
kind of "blah". Two routes into the enemy base, two
sniping platforms in the middle open area.

If the problem with the skybox is what I think it is, it's not Epic's fault but related to UEd's texture alignment tools. If you import a box-uvmapped, um, box as brush and apply the textures there, the seams should be gone. Or so.

Oh yeah, haven't played the map, no UT1 installed anymore here. 5 seems neutral, so... :)

Just fix some texture cuts and the skybox if you want the map to be (somehow) flawless. Nice Work.

First off. Luggage, if you haven't played the map how can you rate it? Not fair to authors.

Anyhow, I like this map. It's an old theme but sort of freshened up in a way. It's right for our small clan. And finding decent maps that play well with 4 to 8 isn't easy. The bots are good and the map looks nice enough. My big gripe is the darkness in the areas near the flag. You can get lost...or kill yourself...or at the least, waste precious time trying to get oriented. Fix the lighting (actually, add some lighting) there and I'd say 8. Good map.

We've played this map quite more and now I have to bump it up a notch. 8

I love this map ... add some light and it's a 9.

One thing that I think would make this map a little better is...
The main drag down the center of town between the flags is defended by a cool snipers nest. The whole road can be skipped, however, if you take the indoor route between the bases, except for about 1 second of visibility as you cross the bridge ... or zero visability if you just do a quick translocate past that point. I'd like the bridge to be longer, so defenders outside have a slightly better chance of spotting people crossing the bridge. As an added touch I'd like to see a small break in the bridge in the middle so crossers had to jump across (but not too large as to have to trans across ... just a short hop.

And now that I'm thinking about possible improvments, I think it would be an amazing addition to the game if the outdoor route was enhanced ... it would be awesome if there were some doorways in the buildings down the side where you could duck into along the way to avoid the sniper nest. Not connected rooms to avoid the sniper alltogether, just a way to strategically work your way from building to buiding to sneak your way through if you want to take the time and be careful about it.

Anyway, again, great map. I hope he comes out with an improved v2 ... might be one of my favorite maps.

this is a good level its not that large either so u cant get lost, i dont look at the sky no point so i cant say anything about the skybox.
It looks good and plays good however the bridge area can get spammy with the flak cannon it plays well and looks good that means its a great map

Good idea, the flag bases visible from each other, only seen that 1 or 2 other times. Only two routes base to base, and without the TL you can only switch from one to the other one way. Each team has a sniper post, and these see both paths, one good sniper is a headshot away from stopping any cap attempt. Saw the bots translocating back and forth indefinately under said sniper window, only stopping to get smacked in the face by a rocket.

Given another, longer route, maybe sewers where you have to go far out of your way to get in it, and with another entrance right in the middle, this could be an 8 in my books. Fix that bot issue too.

I never noticed the skybox issue, never looked up. I guess i'm not the type to notice cosmetic flaws like that.

It reminds me of CTF-Sprinta; both maps have a similar brick-heavy, not very original theme (and certainly not the most fascinating theme Bot has worked with so far), but feature quite decent gameplay backed by a competent technical execution.

This is one fine little map. It has the most realistic outdoor lighting effects I've ever seen in UT—the setting sun throwing a warm glow over the buildings, which in turn cast complex shadows.
All of which gives the map a terrific sense of atmosphere. Textures, while nothing extraordinary, are well chosen and matched.The visible seams in the skybox area shame because it's also very well done otherwise.
As for gameplay, it provides a hairy battle between
teams of 3-5 players each. Good flow=good fun.
I agree with zenpunk about the bridges being
too short. Another change I'd recommend would be an intersecting corridor in the central structure leading out to two additional bridges that connect with the sniper buildings. That would provide an alternate route of attack and retreat.
I'd I could give it an 8.5 if a could. Download it!

I seem to have had this map on my system forever. Tight CTF and fun to play. A CTF map that you just keep coming back to. This mapper has some good work happening.....

I love it all the way except for the size. You can assure the enemy will score as soon as they get the flag. The biggest pro of the map is its looks.

The name of the map is a strange choice.
This map was too easy. I had the difficulty on Adept.
I love the exterior but the inside was rather blah.

I still enjoyed playing it though. Good work.

Wow! This map is super addictive!
The layout of this map is simple, but somehow it works really well.
I wouldn't change anything in this map, except maybe put a bit of lighting near the flag. It is kinda dark there.
