This is the map DM-Brunel would have been if Lruce had the engine for it. Lruces DM-Victoria is the best themed map Ive seen for UT2K3 alongside CTF-Addien. But does the gameplay reach the standards of this maps visual appeal?

Visually, this map has owned the Prophet. Yes, the Prophet has been owned and owned hard. Only CTF-Addien and DM-Nirvana2 have owned me this bad as far as theme goes. Victoria doesnt jerk you around with a generic factory theme, or the typical terrain map. This uses a high level of BSP contruction over Meshes, and it works. The theme is a Victorian powerplant, abandoned of course. This feels like a building folks, not just some random structure with ramps and corridors that seems like its sole purpose was for UT deathmatch. This feels like an actual building, you can actually picture people working in here, turning gears and such. Everything is decaying, falling apart, rusted, dripping, ect. The places reeks of decay and beyond the dusty windows and broken ceiling grates is a old-style village, ripe with sound and activity. Gargoyle statues stand motionless on the Victorian towers that stand above the deserted map. The sounds in this map are also on par with CTF-Addien, only not as interactive at times. This map will remind you just why user maps own the stock epic maps, its mappers like Lruce/Hourences/Rogelio who know how to use this engine. This place is a testimony of just how far atmosphere can go. D/Ling this map for looks alone is worth it, even if you dont like the gameplay you cannot deny the essence of this place. If I could find some bad points about Visuals, theres not much to tell. But the flooded floor in the lower part of the map doesnt seem as visible as it should to me, and the water ripples that break the surface due to above pipe drippage seemed to be floating at first before I realized I was wading in water. On a minor note, there are a few rooms that seem very basic compared to the major sections, not with alot of detail. And just for the sake of being a pest, some textures didnt have high detail set to them (like some in CTF-Addien), but whatever. These minor flaws pale in comparison to the good points of this map, and it gets a well deserved 3 for awe. I should also mention that the music track is perfect for this map. Boo-ya!

I was a little let down by gameplay, but then again Ive never played a Lruce map with truly amazing gameplay (Brunel was good, but not ownage in play). The map is very big compared to most DMs, theres alot of places to go and many open rooms. This place is NOT cramped. Bots perform ok, but they dont have that killer edge. Thats probably due to the maps size, bots seem to get less aggressive in larger environments. All and all, Victoria has about average gameplay. That isnt what I was hoping, but thats better than what I was fearing (Angelheart, bleh). This map is a good play anywhere you take it. In fact, most people will enjoy the gameplay based on the maps theme alone. Simply put, Victoria is probably THE coolest environment to play in thus far.

The Prophets Verdict: I command you to play this. One of the best DM maps released on UT2K3. This map makes all those Ownage maps look like dog crap. With the sole exception of DM-Nirvana2, THIS is the kinda map that actually deserves to be called Ownage. It doesnt offer anything truly mind shattering in gameplay, but it works and snagging is practically nonexistant. David/Hayden/Plutonic/Cliffy , eat your hearts out.

About f*cking time this map showed up here.

My griefs:

The water drops from a pipe have a far too high frequency... it should have been drip... drip... drip... rather dripdripdripdrip which also looks a bit odd imo.

The Prophet was on spot with the water in the basement... I noticed the same in Nirvana][ - I think it's the lack of reflection from the surface.

Sounds were top imo. Even a few small stairs or a small metal trim makes the appropriate sound when stepped upon. The sounds were also more sublte than in Addien. Only flaw I spotted was a metal bridge without the appropriate footsteps.

Just a few small points that make the map somewhat less than perfect. But damn, it's leet.
The map I imagine giving a rating of 10... would have to be like this map... larger, futuristic style... and with those small flaws corrected. Maybe a somewhat more enthusistic use of emitters.

Hah, I wish. There'll prolly never be a map getting a 10 from me. (I mean a serios score)

Very nice map and the flow is very good. I have one gripe though, the sunlight flowing into the building seems a little too bright when you compare it to the skybox.

I love this map! enough said!

Bad things (nitpicking)

-Skybox looks bad with the buildings masked texture, it looks flat.

-Some messy mesh work, Skin wise.

-Mirrored game-play.

Other than that this map is what keeps me going :) just like Ctf-Addein

I am shocked this has not gotten ownage. IF anything I can think of why it did not get ownage as well with CTF-Addein is the fact that these three maps came out basically the same time and cliffyb had to decided which one... :| Which is bad because this map deserves a lot more exposure. I say to NC when the time comes make this MOTW ;)

Good thing the map is MOTW in Unreal Playground…

cool map, the visuals and arch. make it really feel like an abandoned powerplant, great atmotpshere
on my Hayden scale I give the map a 2 because it's not a height map with static meshes thrown in

I don't like the "mirrored" floorplan in DM, but i can't say this map's a bad one. Au contraire, this should deserve an ownage

Great map the only problem i have with it is the water in the basement and the elevator . Something is just not right with the elevator to slow in my opinion or it seems like it is in slow motion cannot quite put my finger on it

Awesome. I didn't care for the sound track, but it doesn't count against the score. Volume on the lifts could be turned up and the basement water thing looks to be an engine problem not the mappers. A solid 8 for a great map with thick atmosphere, great theme, superb build and decent gameplay.

wow, i remember saying 2 lruce hat i didnt see any costum meshes when he was working on the map.
i downloaded it with nothing in mind.

man this map so rocks, no obstacles 2 get stuck behind for real this time (cliffy this is how a map should look like, not the 99% of your ownage maps that suck a big fat female elephant)

Ive been looking around, and besides some small greening it looked awesome water drops donw from above, no mather where yu are, always a few ways out, bots kicking your ass, weapons at the right spot.
it plays just as good as it looks.

(something hour could learn from)

i could go on and on about how it looks, how it plays, but that wouldnt do any good, download the map, play it, notice its worth your money.

rluce bee, can i suck out your talent please :D

Well I have to say, I enjoted this map, although the sunlight did seem a little odd in some places.

We need more maps like this, keep up the good work and maybe experiment with lighting a bit more.

A fat 7 here.

This map is a work of art!
It has a completely different atmosphere to the epic maps; ithas subtlety and its theme is just as fully realised. This mapmaker really knows how to explore a theme without going overboard, and he music really helps to turn the map into a tru'ly professional package
Its a shame though that the framerate suffers on my midrange rig but you cant have everything.

p.s. im seriously considering trying to make a map myself. I've never made any maps for any games before, but im good on photoshop and therefore not completely useless at computer packages. Does anyone know of any good tutorials for newby.
Or if anyone is creating a map, and is good at the technical side but is'nt that artistic may want some help with the theme. Im a graphic designer and I could enhance the visuals while you take care of the layout.

Not bad at all, Lruce as produced a rather good map.
It has impressive lighting in places and he managed to keep the arhectecture confined and still pretty atrrective.
Gameplay is ok, reminds me of his DM-Brunel for ut1.

This is a great map!
High detail, and yet great gameplay - two things that (sadly) often don't come together. The map does occasionally pushes my old GeForce2 to it's very limit, but it doesn't become unplayable. There are one or two spots where he could better have used a static mesh IMO, to improve the lightning (round walls).

As far as visuals are concerned, this map goes in my top five. However, this is a case of letting architecture rule your layout. Thats not a bad thing, if no one did all we would have is a fantastic looking collection of ramps and platforms. However you have to balance it in your mind.

In my mind this map should have been DDOM. If it was, I think it would be very much deserved of ownage, if it isn't already.

I understand how difficult it can be to design your own UT2003 map and a map that is good.

To the author - You have made a superb map and it must have taken weeks with all the customisation you have included.

Just some constructive critisism - It could play better (Not so system resource hungry) if you zoned your map.

Other than that I have to say this is one of the best UT2K3 maps I have seen!

I don't consider this to be one of the best UT2003 maps, and as far as I am concerned it is not better than DM-Brunel from UT, but it's still fun to play.

Well that was quite an expirence. Its a bit of a large level with nice flowing architecture everywhere. Great theme which combined with the ambident sounds and emitters to create a impressive environment. The dripping liquid was something I've never seen before in a 2k3 level.

This is another one of those maps that I played and gave me no real feelings or impressions. Mediocre, mediocre, mediocre. It is one thing that you can tell when a person has an understanding of the fundamentals of level design. It's another thing entirely when a person can take those fundamentals to the next level. This map applied the fundamentals... mostly.

Great atmosphere!!

Lruce Bee has done a great job with this map.
While the structure doesn't blow me away as DM-Brunel did, DM-Victoria has a superior
balanced layout for the usage of each type of
weapon. Some are better suited here but not there, etc ...

One of the all-time greats!

Great map, Nice layout, the only thing is the water, you barely see it, I can't say anything about this though, I don't know how to make that either.
