Overall Score: 8/10

This is easily one of the few maps I can wax my carrot to. Nirvana 2 is probably the best all around user deathmatch map currently available for UT2K3. This map scores the highest rating Ive yet given to a map review, a solid 8. Anyone familiar with my reviewing style should know that when I give a map an 8, then it must damn well be worth the download.

Visually, this is one of the top 3 best looking maps out. The custom meshes and convincing lighting scheme make this one very atmospheric map. Tiles lay loose and scattered all around, at some parts the floor sinks into the earth with stone fragments resting along the edge of dirt pits. Torches and cracked windows illuminate the place and the wooden planks on some floors remain open, exposing the moist mysty fluids that have drained into the basement as a result of the invading snowfall. True, its theme is unoriginal if you think about it....but forget all that man! So what If it is a decaying old style monastary? This map isnt your run in the mill abandoned brick temple/church/shrine, the essence of this particular building glows compared to ANY epic map or user made map with a similiar theme. This is right up there with DM-Victoria and CTF-Addien, though this map offers more rounded eye candy. NOTHING in here is basic looking, the theme is consistant with architecture/lighting/particles/textures/sound. Ive been playing this since it was released, it still owns me.

Luckily, Nirvana 2 provides an impressive array of gameplay to go with it. Granted, the gameplay pales in comparison to the maps appearance, but it is above average and the map runs very fluid. Some holes and spots could have been widened abit, and as the author admits...some parts of the map can be wee bit too much for framerates at times. I recall one game where one of the more open rooms had some slowdown and I got killed by some ghey bot as a result of stuttering performance (I got him back though, heh...hehehe) It could be said that Gorge just got lucky, or that Gorge simply kicked my ass in that one moment. But we all know Gorge really sucks, so there. My rig is pumped, so this usually doesnt happen, and it does not always happen when I play. But I still should note that lower end machines may be fuggered. If you got the gear, add half a point. I gave cast score a 2, since its above average and just plays better than most of the maps available. This is a must for servers, get the hell rid of DM-ShudderMyCreekUpForAlpu and place this baby on there. NOTE: DM-Victoria, the other DM map that owned me visually I gave a 1.5 for gameplay, even though other reviewers added their tally and it came to 2, but of these two amazing maps, I prefer this one since the gameplay is just better adjusted.

The Prophets Verdict: This map has gotten the Cliffy B ownage, but I dont think that is fair. This map does not deserve to be shelved with those much inferior maps (Chainer, Reigncaster, Lightfalls, you gotta be kidding me) This one is beyond Ownage boys and girls, UT2k3 was made so that maps like this could be played. Im keeping my eye on this mapper, Lets hope that he isnt one of those 1 shot wonders, cus this map is freaking Solid.

Hayden, this is the second highly approved map you've given a low score too. It seems your expectations are very high and all, but what would you give your own maps? IF this doesn't deserve ownage, do your maps?

Anyway this map is incrdeably nice. Gameplay is slightly off, but generaly it's ok. Lighting is excellant, as is the use of projectors to make begtter shadows. Texturing is cool, sounds are fine, snow is good, and it even ran well for me.

Overall pretty damn good. I would have given it a 8 if it ran better on my gf4 4600, besides that I like everything else. (except that one slow lift, but thats nitpicking)

Meshwork, lightning and gameplay are way cool. But FPS is not so good, due to high polygon count...

No shit, this map has everything.
I liked the indirect lighting and the intentional shadows in particular.

I noticed how you can actually shoot outside through some of the windows. Rather than a flat skybox, there is a 3d environment, in one place you can hit a fence or manage to shoot through it and hit the buildings in the distance. Nice details.

I didn't like how the puddles of water looked tho, and the long ramp seemed to be made of metal supposedly, that didn't seem to fit in well.

PS: I was told to mention God and Jesus in the context.

Too small. Rooms are repetetive and kinda dull.
Why use electric lighs in a medieval-like building ???
Many new static meshes, but charm = 0.
Also poorly optimized. Laggy.
Doesn't look bad though, it's just missing variety and style.

I've never given a map a 9 before. Looks the shit, plays well, great atmosphere, perfectly fitting music track.

I guess it'd be kinda laggy with lots of players, but it plays well enough on my machine so I'm not gonna start nitpicking.

Deeply impressive.

How can anyone say that this map has no style?

It makes me laugh how hard people can be on maps around here.. exactly what does it take to have style in a map?

IMO -- This map is very unique in its look and style. Very original theme and plays pretty darn good to boot.

Very good details and after turning them pretty much all off it played pretty decent. I'm in a bad mood right now and can't think straight so I wanna ask Hayden a quick question. Are you making some super map that's going to $hit on every map we've seen so far? If so hurry up!!

A map that only new players and those with fast systems containing bleeding edge video cards are going play very much.

Edit: Flow is poor, framerates are terrible (the worst of any UT2k3 map I've seen so far) and nearly everything in the map is either grey or black (making it difficult to see many character models). There is also a very dark and well hidden camping spot behind the trim near the roof.

Original (really outstanding in this respect, in comparision to the vast majority of ut2k3 maps), good flow, great looks.

Compared to some of detritus that gets 'Ownage', this map has it all. Great work Rog ;)

Nice map with the custom meshes and all, some awesome work there. Layout seems pretty good. Only couple of things I can complain about really - seems to be a bit too cluttered with meshes, too much detail to take in, but u dont notice it in-game that much anyway. Framerates are slightly harsh in places and also a fair bit of the map just seemed dark/drab. Music choice is good and makes the map have that "gothic" feel :)

Tho, one of the first maps that looks and plays good.

Absolutely beautifull!! The best looking indoor map I have seen yet. The gameplay is good, not a lot of z-axis though and the lighting and visuals are excellent. I am not really a fan of indooor maps for UT2003 but this one shines out as something special to me. Well done!!

I think Hayden is officially a pompous a$$. This map literally stomps all over any mapping effort he has made. He claims its not ownage but has no problem acknowledging his own maps as "ownage", and is quite proud of them. I beleive his maps to be of average quality, especially compared to Nirvana][. Hopefully he improves upon his past work (but with that attitude i doubt it will happen)

This map is just awesome. Some sweet looks, great gameplay. I love it. Too bad it runs kinda slow, but its better for a 1 on 1 match anyway, so that keeps frames up. I would have liked to see some more projectors so the characters and weapons would react with the shadows better, but nitpicking is a sin sometimes, and definitely in this case.

Freaking excellent work Rog!

A truly outstanding piece of work. This one and Warbeast's stuff blow me away visually. I'm completely and utterly gob smacked.

I will agree that the map is pushed toward the visuals rather than gameplay. The gaps for Z-axis are not large enough for enemies to register in your peripheral vision. I can sympathise - the rigidness static meshes do have a tendency to affect the layout of my own maps.

The fps are a bit low because of shear amount polys in view (Being the vain bastard that I am I went around with "stat render" turned on). About 4x more bsp/smesh polys in view than any DE/Epic map.

There are some really good examples of how bsp can be lit so much better than meshes. I will lock that one away for later use.

I give this map an 8 cause I know Desp can do even better.

Hayden: Any foo can make good terrain maps.

Reviewer: Lay off DM-Chainer, that map is very solid. Desp is no one hit wonder, check out his other stuff. He WILL go pro, if he lets it. Mark my words.

As said before "awesome looking" really nice meshes, texturing is excellent as well as lighting.

It is probably only me but maps that look this good and have this much eye-candy make game play difficult for me. It is hard to see opponents and I found at times they tended to blend into the surroudings. My eyes hurt after playing it but I think that is because it looks so good to almost be busy.

But definately in the top three of any map I have ever seen or played.

I love the detail of this map. The rain and music really won me over.

However, if more than 2 players join in on our LAN, it gets unbearably chopppy and unplayable.

It is a nice piece of art, but not practical for playing a real game.

One of the most beautiful maps I've ever seen. I give this one a 10 for beauty, construction, and atmosphere.

Unfortunately, I get to spend a lot of time looking at it at a staggering 9 to 12 frames per second.

I download a map to play it and have some fun. If I wanted to stare at artwork, I'd admire some Monet paintings - and have a much better frame rate staring at his paintings to boot.

So it gets a -7 for gameplay...because it just doesn't have any.

Really is a stunning map but my poor Athlon +2100, 256DDR RAM and ATI Radeon 9700 128MB card struggle with this bad boy. Some maps that are being released look amazing but because of their detail they chug like a fat bitch so this lowers their fun factor considerably. Shame really as this map is really good and when my PC gets going it plays well.

Sweet, the music also fits well. Bottom line is this is what ownage is all about. Going to be hard to top that. A bit large on the filesize but who cares, its an expirence in itself.
