Rogelio ‘Desperado#2’ Olguin is certainly not a newcomer. He received a couple of ownage awards from CliffyB for his maps CTF-Baranco and DM-Nirvana][ and has worked on projects like the ORM-Mappack and the retail game Tactical Ops: Assault on terror. The map is an ‘oldy’ since he made it in 1999. Quite some time ago :) But I was still excited enough to go and play this map. It didn’t really live up to my expectations and the map itself isn’t great compared to his new work, but hey, it’s old! DM-NalaStation is a medium sized deathmatch map set in an industrial environment. The author says it’s for up to 6 players but I think 8 players would fit just fine.
As expected the visuals are nice, good use of textures, no misalignments. The level looks hightech and uses the SGTech package to achieve the hightech looks. The architecture looks pretty interesting with lots of curves, angles and details. I did spot a few BSP bugs, but not too big ones. There’s a couple of traps included, triggered by 4 buttons found in the level. One trap will crush you like a fly and the other trap will let you drown. The lighting is decent, with a large scale of different colours. The corona work is something I didn’t like. Most of the coronas seemed to big for their lightsource and !! there were red lights with white coronas!! I guess Desp has some explaining to do here. The coronas mentioned above can also only been seen when standing really close to the light. Whether this is another mistake by the author or has been done intentionally to hide the ugly coronas I can’t tell.
The overall gameplay is good but has a few flaws. The bots work fine and the flow is good too, but the item placement makes it less satisfying. The author used a lot, and then I mean A LOT of items in his map. To sum it up for you: 27 health vials, 21 rocket packs, 16 mini ammo boxes, 15 BladeHoppers, 14 bio ammo packs, 12 Pulse ammo packs, 10 MedBoxes, 8 FlakAmmo packs, 6 shock cores, 2 Body armors, 1 Shieldbelt`, 1 damage amplifyer and 1 Keg o’health. You can tell you won’t run out of ammo or health quickly. Seriously, this is waaay to much for a map designed for only 6-8 players. Finding yourself with 200 health and 100 armor isn’t a rarity here, ofcourse not in inhuman or godlike, atleast not with my lousy UT skills :D.
There are some ambient sounds for the computers and other tech stuff, nothing special here. The music track is Mech8, it fits OK, nothing special here either.
Conclusion: A decent map if you don’t look at its age, but for its age, I think it’s a good map, but since we don’t look at age the score isn’t all that high. The crappy coronas and the überpile of items don’t contribute to the score either. It should entertaine you well enough though.

| Desperado#2 01-12-2003 11:51 AM MST | | This was just a test to see how to upload to Nalicity :)
Ill also ask for review but I do not like it so much anymore either... So... I do not expect a good review coming from this.
| paranoid 07-25-2003 11:57 PM MDT | Rating: 6 | | You can tell this is a desperado map. . .the architecture just gives it away. and it's good to see that he managed to maintain alignment with his textures, which would be difficult for anyone, considering the curves and weird shapes in this level!I didn't really mind the over abundance of items, sure sometimes it made me laugh to see the floor littered with them, but i just kept convincing myself, that without these the bots would be sooo scungie . . .it gets you through it!
If there is any one thing in this level which i think is bad, it would be the lighting, to me it's pretty awful . . .and it's not so much the abundance of color in here, just how it was used. There are way too many red lights, and half them are in used in useless places (like places that are already filled to the brim with white and orange lights) And the fact that nearly everytime you see a set of three square lights casting off one single cylinder light on the floor,it just doesn't work. (oh and the coronas do look really bad. . .sometimes anyway)
Anyway, even with all that i still don't regret d/l this map because i find it plays incredibly good!

Anyhow, I would give it a 5.5 as well. Only I can't...I think. There are no halfs on the rating choices for users. So I'll be generous. Oh, it's good to have a reviewer who can spell (though he missed a beat on "to much").
| Frieza 07-27-2003 08:12 AM MDT | Rating: 6 | | Thx for the compliment :) I didnt even stood still with that retro part, it's just that I had to write 3 reviews to become a reviewer here and I jsut randomly picked 3 maps and stumbled accross this one :)
