Overall Score: 8/10

AWE: 2.5
The author of Golgotha, Grzegorz Kubicki (< had to copy/paste that :p ), has given to UT community some other great assault maps in the past, and while
some might ramble about some gameplay 'issues' in those maps, most will agree that Grzegorz has a sense of place when creating each of them.

Golgotha is set in a mountanous area, where a castle/fortress stands surrounded by a moat, blood filled. The eerie, creepy place serves as the portal area for the spirit world where demon Huron is trapped. His heart is to open said portal and so,
it is your job to enter the castle and destroy the big blood-red heart.

What most got my immediate attention was the fact that the whole map is consistent with the given theme; and the epic-sized beast it is. There's not a single texture or brush placed there just to "fill the hole" - texturing and general use of architecture are normally good (made by Quake 3 textures BTW), but there's also some glaring texture misalignments, in some spots like rock or trims, and more in places like the 4 outer towers of the keep. It doesn't hurt, but looks unfinnished/lazyness.
Lighting gives the complimentary touch to the awesome theme of the map, and although there's one or two places where it feels too strong/overlit, it is usually well used all around. No seizure danger here.

The end cinematic is simple, but keeping true to the map. The sky changes, birds sing and the demon's crawling hand reflects its defeat. (BTW, i'm almost sure that hand mesh is from Deus Ex :p).

BUILD: 3
As with the visuals, also the sound is good. Out of the keep, pain-filled screams echo through the "valley", surely the source of all that blood (MUAHAHHAHHAH... ahem).
Beyond that, we get wind in higher ground, rope swinging as walking by the wood bridges, and the usual environment audio.
Soundtrack could be a bit more the creepy style; instead, the author choosed a more fast paced one, but that ends up fiting the map nicely.
A good thing about the map is that even though it makes extensive use of terrain, it manages to not have BSP hazards (at least not that i'm aware of).

Objectives are to my liking, few but "hard" to get. They feel right with the map, and are (mostly) rewarding to get. Local messages keep players aware of progress.
Attackers have "moving" spawn points that activate after some objectives (always a good thing), so, no spawning from the beginning of the map all time ;).
Defenders get to their positions via teleporters, correctly identified, and get 1 or 2 defense "helps" - namely a trap and a ghostly spirit of DooM and all EviL
(MUHA... MUHAHAHAHAHAHHA... ok, i'll stop).

CAST: 2.5
Denoting the author's mapping skills is the overall good framerate one has all time, even on the bigger areas like the beggining for attackers.
The flow is great, accomplishing objective after other in a very pleasing manner, keeping the gameplay strong and addicting, while achieving that balance between the
"hard-but-not-impossible" situation.

Item placement is superb, as it gives to both teams toys to play with, but only the necessary, and doesn't dish out ammo galore. It just feels right.

BOT play is good, but straight forward. Attacking BOTs fullfil the objectives well but miss some cunning to "work around" some situations, like humans do (and will, specially when at the inner tower of the keep). Defending BOTs don't seem to make use of sniper positions at keep towers (a privilieged place of defence early on).

All in all, a good ASSAULT map.

Wow

This is one of the best as maps ive downloaded here. The map is huge (but not to large), the music suits the ambience perfectly, the ambient sounds are also very good. The map has an unusual theme (destroy demon Hurons Heart), which adds to the fun (every map now is a millitary base e.d).
Bot support is good. graphical effects are good. texturing can be a bit boring (of course in a big map)
cool ending scene.

A must have download is u have a fats connection. its very much fun for its size (8 MB!)

EDIT... I told you, the map kicks ass.

Love it!!!
Beautifully done map, can someone please review this?? I want to see what others think.
A few bad spots, like the end objective takes forever to destroy, but good nontheless.
Update: For me once, the end objective(destroying the demon's heart) took every rocket and flak grenade i had before blowing to pieces. Then, on my second try, it only took one shock rifle blast. Can someone explain for me?????

Brilliant map with the AL version fine tweaking it. Full of tactical launch potential and lots of snipering :D My only problem with this is the bots never got scripted to do book :( joke ;)

The map has a nice atmopshere with great acoustics! I dont think there are any other Red/green themed maps out there (are there?)

This is a special Assualt map. You know why? It's because the difficulty between defending the base and attacking is balanced. Playing with adept bots (i've customised my bots, u should too), i had no one good on my team. I was attacking the base with George W. Bush, Colin Powel, Don Rumsfeild, and Brad Pit, trying to steal the base from The Evil Weasel (which is a bot with maxed out stats, everything perfect), Agent Smith, Britny Spears, and Bullshitman.
While attacking i was challenged but won. While defending i was challenged but won. I upped the difficulty and changed team members. I was challenged, but once again won. This map is great for both sides. Which is more than i can say for some of Epic's maps.

One map that made me look again at ASSAULT mode. That says it all, doesn't it ;)

EDIT: The Purple Bunny: it's not the map's fault. You have to learn to play better ;p ...

All things are great in this map (i first played it on servers and then saw it here).
The type of maps i like.
But now the things i didnt liked:
The point where you have to unlock a entrance to the inside of the castle when you come from the stairs, i didnt even saw it first.
Thats the only thing the rest is good.
Oh one last thing the movie looks great!

This map has not much details in some parts while opposite in other parts. Although it looks simple at some places, the ambient and music creates an eerie sound that rings through your ears! Especially the death-screams!

The little movie shown after finishing the map, shows the banishment and return of Harun to wherever he came from represented as a hand carven from different shapes...

This map should feel a lot better if it didn't seem downright biased against the attacking team. I mean, after 5 minutes, my team still couldn't get into the cave because all the defending bots spawn right there, and easily take out the attackers. Same for the bridges, the bots using rocket launchers easily kill the attackers by knocking them off. That just gets plain annoying, especially since you respawn so far behind where you were. If this were changed to make defenders spawn away from objective points, having to get there before you do, that would lessen the load on the attackers. I would also make the heart at the end take less damage, or have more health. Seems too easy to destroy.

The concept and design are great though, and in the end it's a very nice assault map to work with, it's just the design of spawn points and weapons near key places that lower the score.

Uniquely atmospheric and beautiful. Requires coordinated assaults for every objective. A must own. The only things that bother me are that it's a joke to defend against bots, and that there's an occasional glitch where the bots don't register that an objective has been completed and just stop. Still, it does indeed own.

My strategy for getting through the temple is to make sure all my bots are with me right above the entrance. Then I have them attack en masse, while I stay just outside the door hosing down charging defenders with the minigun as I slip in behind them. Running into a roomful of godlike bots with sniper rifles won't work on any map ;)

Not a bad assault map really. Shame it's so easy to defend.
It's so easy to snipe the attacking bots for a while, it's so easy to stop them crossing the bridge and it's even easier preventing them from making it to the switch to open the labyrinth.

As an attacker I can only give you this advice.

Let your bots attack.
Jump down in the blood river, sniperrifle ready.
When your bots jump down, back them up by sniping as many enemy bots as possible.
You can easily overpower the bot team there.

As for the rest, no biggie really.
Once you've made it on the castle walls, you don't even have to take the stairs to the lower parts.
Just jump down on the ehm..."rooftops". You'll take some damage, but not that much.

Most of the times you can hit the switch, enter the "..." before the enemy bots will even locate you.

Completing the final objective is too easy really.

This is the only point in the map where as a defender you'll have a hard time.

Talking about bot play here though. Apparently for online play there is an optimised version of this map.
There are some "tricks" to complete the map pretty fast...but tbh it's lame and kinda spoils the thrill.

The map does have great atmosphere, excellent use of sounds (the devil calling you), the ending sequence is very nice btw.
The map has nice touches. You'll encounter a strange entity once you're past a certain small room leading into the "great outdoors..."

Just play the map :O)

So much stuff there, and no BSP holes!?!?!
WOW!!! this map impressed me in terms of originality look and objective variety.
BTW I see the author put BOOKS in there. I wonder if he was aware that it is used for cheat jumps. That use of BOOK jump is sortof cheesy and not up to theme of tha whole map. OH well.

BTW i got a minor complaint about the first gate. In online game people use RIPPER blades to make that gate a real spam area. the blades go back and forth from wall to wall and makes it nearly impossible for attackers to get through. well never mind.

Golgotha's an awesome assault map, with some things I've never seen before, like the floating statue just before you get into the castle. Also, when in the temple, the defenders have a chance to just sit back and hear some creepy whispering. It's at its loudest when you stand right in the doorway.
