Falls is one of those maps where the author obviously puts in the effort but the end result doesn't quite live up to expectations.

The map is set on a tall structure that stems from an unseen base in a nearby body of water and alongside a massive waterfall. Visually the map is standard, the map structures are custom made and are organic in nature, but lack a certain detail that makes them insteresting, they are basically curvy, shiny, catwalks and ramps. The terrain around the map works but is abit clumsy looking from certain perspectives. It is angular and flat in places, not very up to speed with UT2003's terrain making abilities. The water fall is a nice touch, I like maps that are set against a large hunk of nature. The waterfall has a very reflective look to it though, as you can see the entire map in this huge mirror effect. I found that rather boring, the water fall would have had much better impact on the map if it was foamy white like other massive waterfalls, in this map the reflectivness distracts from the size. All and all, the map looks ok, though there are better looking natural themes out there.

Gameplay is abit dissapointing. The map is basically on 3 floors of floating platforms that get bigger on the way up and are connected by jump pads. Two distant pads contain sniper guns and almost the entire map is exposed to them. The whole game revolves around bouncing up a level and then bouncing across the chasm to the sniper guns and then bouncing back down to the lower platform. This process can be done in less then ten seconds since all the jump pads are in close proximity. No real skill is required to snipe at people from the distant catwalks and as long as you can prevent players from reaching the jump pads that lead to your spot, you have a better chance of killing people. The level is too brief and too open for a real experienced fight.

The Prophet's Verdict: The map looks fine but gameplay may not be enjoyed by many players. You should d/l yourself and be the judge, since some people seem to think it's 'Ownage'.

How did this get ownage? Sure it looks pretty, but its tiny and has little flow. Definately a case of style over substance.

5.5 nicely textures platform, but thats about it, the canyon looks so not natural, it looks like a giant 2d shape
the waterfall has wrong reflection, there are various bugs (such as im able to get to the bottom of the waterfall without loosing health), etc
and theres a feeling missing in the map

This is probably the best custom meshes i've seen but its not very playable even on 1 vs 1. More than 2 or 3 jump pads is NOT cool in my opinion unless they are absolutely necessary (like in this map) so I can't complain there. Thing is its easy to camp by a ledge and blast someone as soon as they pop up from the pads coming from the Lightning guns cause you damamge when you land back at the rocket launcher. Plain and simple the map looks cool (except the canyon and mis-textured waterfall) but it just doesn't play well.

I think it's fine for small DeathMatches, and it's pretty too. I have to disagree with 1/2Lunatic's statement though - anybody trying to camp on this map can pretty much count their lifespan in seconds.

clearly the maps were geared towards design rather than gameplay, but then the author never really intended anything else (it was entered into the specularity design contest and then won it?)... truely, the textures and meshes are outstanding, and possibly even better than those seen in any single retail map... however, the size of the map means that it's strictly one vs one. Gameplay is also a case of "nothing truely spectacular", but I wouldn't say it is a bad map at all.

It was unwise to put Lightfalls and Nightfalls in the same zip though, and doubling the filesize for the sake of being able to play a version at night is a bit extreme in anyone's opinion when the meshes already make it big. Its recommended to anyone who wants to stare at somthing pretty... just don't expect miracles from such a teeny map ^_^

Truely a winner in it's design compo, but I'm not sure whether ownage is the right word... it is close though...

too simple to play that well. 1v1 maybe.

looks nice, bar the 90 degree cliffs on every side. extruded 2d shapes != nice looking terrain. gets 5.

i think this map is f**kin fantastic, i cant belive that anyone would go thru the process of individually creating all the stat meshes for an entire map, and to fit them together so well. It runs very smoothly, and i can fit about 6 or 7 bots on there no problem with no lag. if anyones also played Nightfalls, thats even better, with an atmosphere and gravity to it that far outweighs the likes of Tokaraforest or tree-of-ages.

I downloaded this map when it was first released after that contest and I couldn't believe my eyes.
I download almost every new custom map for UT 2003, but the looks of this one still haven't been topped by any other mapper !
The gameplay is good for 1on1, maybe also a normal deathmatch with 3 players.

@LondonsDarkestChild: How can you play this with 7 bots !? :|

Great foreground, but the background look very square and newbieish.

I don't mind the gameplay at all. The layout seems very inspired by that Quake 3 map - the longestyard (I think).

The custom textures and meshes have potency, I'd like to see a larger map (with better floorplan) using that theme.
The gameplay is too quakish (referes to the spaceplatform map with the railgun on a seperate platform) and I personally don't like such open maps.
Still, there is some use for these mehses (great texuring)

I think cliffy was drinking too much when he gave these maps ownage, but they are fun maps when played they way theyre meant to be played. These maps are very quakeish, but with UT looks. There is better stuff out there, but I had a good time on these.

When I read the review and the comments I though this would be far worse than at the first sight. Fortunately, I was wrong. This map looks awesome! C'mon! Rating of 4? The gameplay is not so bad. Sure this is rather small, but some maps are just small :) I'm not a big fan of jump pads, but in this map they are absolutely neccessary. Low gravity would have been much worse choice. Item place ment is ok, although I would have put Flak and Rocket launcher to the long sniping spots and replaced their current locations with Lightning gun and Goop gun.

One other thing that affects the score is that I like "strance locations" like this. I have to admit, though, that the replay value is not so good. I believe Cliffy rated this as ownage because of the static meshes.

Well, I don't know about playability comments but I'd certainly want to play this in 1on1. Maybe it wasn't suited to UT2003 but I think it should play better in UT2004 with it's lesser jumps and dodges.

Anyway, has anyone tried playing this map on a UT2004 server ? For some odd reason, our clan server doesn't recognize it at all and it doesn't show up in webadmin.
