I saw this map forgotten in the depths of NC and I thought I'd do a review for it cos it brought me lots of fun back in the good old days : ) Some of you may remember the author, Fragswill, who in the past made some good maps like CTF-Abase or DM-Deimos. Anyway, I think this one is his best. Its a strange map, so small but full of room to dodge and so lowpoly but so good-looking... I simply love it! Lets see what you'll find in here.
AWE: 2.5
The map is set on what appears to be a nali-style mine/factory just like the ones you visited on you trip to Na-Pali some years ago. I always liked that theme but I know that some ppl hate that grey/brown textures of mine.utx but that should not be a problem here cos everything was well done. Expect to see the usual stuff such as ventilation shfts on the ceilings, pipes everywhere, wires here and there and of course that infamous element that any industrial themed map must feature: crates :D. There's nothing wrong with the map in this category but neither there anything special. Textures are well used throughout the map and are well aligned and even being as lowpoly as this map is, wherever you look you'll see well designed architecture. Sure the author could have added more details but I can assure you that everything looks good enough to keep you playing. My only complain here is the lighting that its not in the same level as the rest f the map. Maybe more saturated colours and sharper radius would help but its ok as it is. Oh, and there's a horrible teleporter that is totally out of context but meh, Nalis are stange dudes anyway.
BUILD: 2
Construction here is solid. Brushes are well aligned and there nothing that will block you way to victory while in a gunfight. Bots do well but they dont seem to be interested in taking the bio rifle, speaking of wich, its placed on a terrible spot. Bots navigate well the map and I didnt see'em stuck anywhere. There a lift near the armor that works well so does the teleporter so any problems there. I couldnt fin any bsp cut or hom effects but neither could I find to much life in this map. If you turn off the music the only ambients you'll hear are a fan and some humming here and there. I thing some water sounds near the pipes or beeps arround the machinery (spell?) would raise the mark here, but its not the case and its a pitty cos sound setup is something I love in maps. See DM-Brunel as example : ) Nothing else to say here because everything works fine so...
CAST: 2.5
Did I say that this map has brought me lots of fun? Oh, did I? I see, so lemme say it again. This map brought me lots of fun. Its a small sized arena but it has plenty of room to dodge and run and it never feels too cramped nor to boxy/empty. Layout sometimes can feel like you are running in circles but once the fragging starts you wont notce that cos it flows very well for the most part except for some item placement that would need a revision but im sure you'll love the gameplay. I missed some more ammo packs for some weapons though I never ran out of ammo. I found this map works very well for 4 players, specially on TDM 2on2 but it could be fun with any real weapons mod a la AgentX or any other. Dont ask why, its something Ican feel.
So, in conclusion what we have here is a small sized fast paced map with good flow and visuals that should be on any tdm/duel server. Sure it could have more of everything but as De Gaulle said: "The one who knows when its enough, will always have enough"

The very outdated mine.utx textures makes this map look worse than it should IMO - but I'm willing to ignore that because this map is fun to duel in. Item placement seems pretty good. However the goo gun is in way too dangerous of a spot, making it not worth picking up.

Only thing that bothered me was the textures that made the map feel old. Can strongly recommend this old masterpiece to anyone who likes to experience a good game of deathmatch :)

| redfist 08-12-2005 03:01 AM MDT | Rating: 6 | | ya game play is the best part, but i think the textures and or we are so used to the old textures ,is whats giving it a bad rap. It does feel a little to hallwayed, but it's pretty good. heh you call a 6.5 a low score, but i feel proud of my 6 posting,my 3's are everybody elses six,and my 6.5 is everyone else 8 lol.
