This is the best deathmatch level I have played in recent history. It takes many different elements that mappers are usually afraid to put together, and combines them effectively creating a good-looking, spacious map that is like nothing that has been seen before.
Pahgio is medium sized, I find it best for 4 to 6 players, and is approximately half indoors and half outoors. The setting seems to be an ancient mine, with two main floors and a large scale, providing many opportunities for vertical combat. There is no central arena as such, but thanks to the excellent layout and open spaces you will never be far from an opponent.
Visuals and sound are both excellent, with realistic crackling torches and very good texturing and architecture. DavidM has provided a good looking level without going overboard on trim or crates or hanging sheets of moss. There are little details such as wooden planks resting on a wall, which all adds to the quality of the level, but there is nothing that will get in your way as you run from or at an opponent. There is one biggish BSP hole but it is out of the way and will not in any way affect gameplay.
Part of the success of this level is due to the outdoor area. I think without it Pahgio would just have been an uninteresting two-tier Agio-style map. The sky looks good (although I think that moon looks a little too close...), the terrain looks sublime, the lighting is good and the sound effects are subtle, all combining to create a convincing atmosphere. Just because it is outdoors does not mean it is going to be flat however, and you can have just as much, if not more, Z-axis fun here as anywhere else on the map. There are many routes back into the main interior, although to be honest I just liked staying in the open air.
Botplay and item placement are both superb, and most of the time I was playing with Infiltration proving this level can cater for a wide range of combat styles. I have not mentioned poly counts yet, and that is because they are not much of a problem, despite being over 250 in some places. Thanks to excellent zoning and other techniques DavidM has kept frame rate reasonably high, and that my system (PII 400, 128mb RAM, Voodoo3 3000, which is pretty low-end now) could run the level with ease means almost anyone will have fun here. There is only one thing I would like to see, and that is that some of the chains holding crates up in the air could be broken, causing the crate to fall to the ground and crush anyone below it. It can be done, and I think would make for an interesting little ambush technique that would not annoy so-called hardcore gamers.
The screenshot looks a little crap, as if it was taken in 16-bit, meaning all the colours are b0rked. And the map name has a ;) after it in the browser. Dammit David that's not funny and makes it stand out from the rest of the rotation. Aside from that the level is a well-rounded, high quality, professional and very entertaining level that should be in anyone's collection.

| David 'DAVIDM' Münnich | | Test
| Shock6822 | Rating: 8 | | Good map, bad HOM, pah items
| Warrior | Rating: 9.5 | | Great map. Bots runs great and it is very balanced.
| Cranium | Rating: 7.5 | | Rocket launcher orgy
| XeaN85 | Rating: 9 | | Pahgio, another masterpiece made by our masterdesigner: DavidM. After Agio DavidM made another Ancient/Crypt like or whatever map. This map is not only indoor (like Agio) but (you guesst it) outdoor as well. Perfect Architecture, good botplay as well. 9/10 Jeremy "XeaN" Kalkman
| Ammo | Rating: 6 | | The author and map are highly over-rated. Nothing special on this one. Runs a little slow at times.
| Kain | Rating: 9 | | there's one BSP hole near one of the doors from inside to outside, sure it quite big and but is in a corner and has no relevance to gameplay whatsoever.
| Red Fox | Rating: 10 | | This map smash my had :] From Russia with love.
| BangOut_[EH] | Rating: 8 | | Boobies.
| Blaster0183 | Rating: 9.5 | | This map is sooooooooooooooooooooooo frickin good! I just wish it was bigger and had more of an outside area. Also, I can't give this map a 10 because you can never really find too much of a theme in some of David M's maps, but WHO CARES? it rules none the less (Kain, I also recommend playing it with Infiltration on!)
| Agent X | Rating: 8.5 | | Outside area looks especially nice. David M's weapon/ammo placement isn't as bad here like some of his other maps. High polys in certain areas.
| Blooddog_sweden | Rating: 9.5 | | Another good map from DavidM. I really like this map. It's almost a ten!!! very good idea.
| Mike3894 | Rating: 9 | | I like.
| DangerousDave | Rating: 9 | | Excellent map...I really enjoyed it. The scenery is top-notch and the playability is awesome.
| Deathwing | Rating: 7 | | The outside and inside areas just seem too.....seperate. :/
| Gladiator | Rating: 7 | | I like this map!
| sHad0w | Rating: 6 | | I can't see what's so special with this map... I think it's really boring
| Juno 10-28-2003 08:14 AM MST | Rating: 6 | | Overrated could be the word of the day 4 this map!I have tried to play it many times, and altough the visuals are great, the gameplay is not great at all(or is not my style at all)...
| _Unreal_ 10-28-2003 05:20 PM MST | Rating: 6 | | Average architecture and gameplay
| Manticore 11-04-2003 07:18 PM MST | Rating: 5 | | As someone else said you either end up inside or outside and then the bots start congregating in that area. Quite frankly I just played this map again five minutes ago after having forgotten I had it loaded and have already forgotten what else +ve I can say. So, for me, the map is just ok. Nothing more or less.....
Now I remember, the whole thing became a bit of a rocket arena for some reason. Just kept hanging off that weapon.... Still, for me it's not totally ownage.
| misterrioes 11-05-2003 12:45 PM MST | Rating: 5 | | only thing impressive in this map is that he made it to make the outdoor part funneh ... average map
| scirmast 11-05-2003 05:33 PM MST | Rating: 8 | | DavidM has combined all good things which makes a good map. Theme could still be more unique.
| Reciprocity 11-09-2003 10:15 AM MST | Rating: 6 | | I like DavidM's stuff but this one didn't really light my coals. It not anything I haven't seen before. As previously mentioned, the rocket launcher does tend to dominate over the other weapons. This map shows the original "DavidM" style with the "original" part. Don't get me wrong. This is by no means a bad map, just an average one. I hate it when people try to merge outdoor and indoor arenas. Show me one map where that's executed correctly and I'll show you a singing cat. EDIT: To Nahand; Meow, Meow, Meow.... Thanks for the maps although, their nothing special either.
| M@estro 11-07-2003 04:10 PM MST | Rating: 8 | | A map with much differce in height. Rugged terain. I like the gameplay.
A good map.
| XepptizZ 11-08-2003 04:01 PM MST | Rating: 8 | | A bit dark, but hey, it's a nocturnal map. Amazing achitecture, and good texturing. Theme's a kinda old, but used in a new way. Not a lota big areas, And that's the only thing in the map that's missing in my point of view.
| Vertigo 12-28-2005 03:29 PM MST | Rating: 8 | | i cant believe I did not comment on this one back in the day! Great map combining outdoor terrain with good indoor z-axis action!
| redfist 12-28-2005 09:30 PM MST | Rating: 7 | | Amazed no new comments, we ran this one on our {RAGE} clan server, but was confusing to me and never really did get to know the map. Somthing about it messes me up, i don't know why, still a good level.
