DM-Noor (UT99)

A rusty arena that's quite the contrary in terms of gameplay. Although the visuals are okay, it's the gameplay that'll keep you coming back.

AWE: 2.0

The textures are from the Rorschach package and used to good effect here. The primary theme is rust and it sure does show - perhaps a bit too much. Pretty much every where you go looks like any other location within the map. Keeping within a theme is important but so is variation within a theme. Although the textures are very well applied, a bit more of a mix in terms of location variation would have been much appreciated. Still they're well aligned and well-trimmed.
The lighting is nicely applied but again lacks variation. Yes, not all the lights are one color but they're very similar throughout the map. On the other hand, the colors, despite one set being white, are tied in well with the textures and theme and overall they present a pleasing effect. Nothing's oversaturated nor too bright nor too dark. The are shadowy areas and lighter areas and they blend well together.
The architecture is very nice in general. Not overly complicated nor overly simplistic, the wall insets are nicely shaped and the overall geometry adds to the theme. The skylights overhead are a nice touch but what really stands out is the skybox which lends a feel of a functioning facility to the relatively static (in comparison) inside. It's nothing too fancy, but the flowing pipes, smokestack, and other various details really help bring home the theme. It's a pity there wasn't more of this represented inside as well.
In general, the awe is very well executed even though the color pallete may not be the most visually appealing out there. Still, the theme is implented very well and the only big complaint is the lack of variation in texturing and lighting which degrades landmark development for more ease of map layout memorization.

BUILD: 2.5

The BSP is assembled very well and each piece seems to tie to the others almost seamlessly. There are no visible HOMs and nothing seems like it doesn't fit. The movers work well and their associated sounds have been chosen well. The animated textures do their job well at protraying flowing pipes despite the obvious disadvantage of being somewhat necessarily unaligned for some of the twists and turns. It's a nice effect and executed well. The ambient is a good attempt overall but suffers a little from not entirely matching up to locations and not being carried through the map. The are locational ambient sounds but no very general ones. Also, some nice triggered sounds would have set off some of the map pieces even more. Sdaly these were lacking.
In general it's constructed very well but more work on the sound side is necessary.

CAST: 2.5

The gameplay here is good and the bots will give you a challenge. There's plenty of z-axis for everyone and some nicely varied z-axis as well. However, more layers to it and possibly a third level would have improved the layout more. Not that it needs much improvement. I'd say the biggest problem I found was that a good portion of the map is fairly tight. The lower portions are fairly closed in compared to the openess of the top. I think a better mix of the two is in order - a little less open up top and a little more open down at the bottom. The overall flow is good - I found myself visiting every section of the map and never seemed to lack for a weapon or health. The shield belt was a puzzler however and I'm not sure if it's overly difficult to get. The bots seemed to have trouble grabbing it because whenever it was present, they seemed to concentrate in that area and therefore fought instead of trying to pick it up. Even using the default player count setting this would occur. In terms of map size and player count, the author reccomends 2 - 6. I think 6 could be too much and consider playing more at 2 - 4. But maybe that's just me.
In any event, the map will keep you on your toes and is a good time. It's not the best out there but it will give you some nice DM pleasure.

All of it put together, it's neither the prettiest, nor funnest DM map made for UT99. But it does deserve respect for doing so much so well - even if it's not excellent. The texturing is good as is the lighting but more variation is needed. The skybox really 'finishes' the theme but more ambient sound development is needed. Overall it's a quality map to add to one's collection. Not a must-have, but if you're looking for a new DM map to play around in, it'll suit your needs fine.
