Level Size: Medium
Recommended Player Load: 6 Players
This level takes place in a cathedral setting, as you may have already gathered.
This is one of the best DM levels that I've played in a long time. It comprises of various arena styled areas, joined together by a selection of corridors and chambers. Texturing is spot-on. A consistent theme runs deep throughout. The level somewhat resembles DM-Gothic in appearance, as well as it's level of quality. The architecture here is what really brings this level into it's own. Archways, windows, staircases - just about every part of this level has been worked into a work of art. Just look at the screenshots. An appropriate music track has been chosen, which greatly enhances the overall feel of the level. But, there are no ambient sounds at all. The sounds of bells in the distance, Nali chants, or whatever would have added to an already excellent level. The lighting on this level is also excellent. A kind of gloomy half-darkness looms over the level, enhanced by a purpley coloured skybox.
AI is perfect. The bots play as well as any human opposition. They collect all weapons and items and powerups, as well as camp in some very sneaky places. Item placement is equally good. Items aren't overly placed, or too sparse in number - the balance is just right. Gameflow is excellent. The corridors and arenas link up well, making sure there are no dead ends at all. Gameplay s pure brilliance. I played a game up to 150 frags and didn't get bored of the level at all. Basically, if you like DM-Gothic (which includes pretty much everyone), then you'll love this level. The purple skybox on this level tops it off perfectly. That's another similarity between this level and DM-Gothic.
In conclusion, this is a superb level. I haven't seen a good level like this for a while now. This level is definitely among the best out there; one that I'm sure will prove to be a strong contender for map of the week. As I've mentioned, if you like DM-Gothic, then you'll no doubt feel at home with this level. After you've got to grips with the layout, you'll agree with me when I say that this is a level that no one should be without. Whilst concentrating a lot on providing an excellent setting for combat, the author has also managed to deliver a lesson in good gameplay that all authors out there have something to learn from.
DM Cathedral ]I[ is;
A superb level
A joy to play
A joy to look at
DM Cathedral ]I[ isn't;
Totally flawless
Strong in the area of audio work
For snipers
Teaching points for author:
With mapping skills like those, you can't go wrong. For your next masterpiece, try a more elaborate setting. Look at DM-Morpheus, DM-Phobos, DM-Anubis, CTF-LavaGiant, etc.

| DarkSyndicate | Rating: 10 | | This map is l33t!
| Deathwing | Rating: 8 | | Gameplay isn't perfect, but close enough. Good looks too.
| Mxtrmntr 12-14-2002 01:39 PM MST | Rating: 5 | | rather flat and boring, like dm-gothic :/
| BeWilderBeest 12-14-2002 09:43 PM MST | Rating: 5 | | Much better than his previous cathedral map, yet still far short of the mark. Layout is flat and uninspired, architecture is 'bolted on', more thought could have gone into placing weapons and items, and the gameplay verges on the outright boring... Suffers from a bad case of 'room-corridor-room' syndrome. Really, really average... in every way.
