Old review imported into the database. John, now known as Angelheart (new game, new name), is a terrific mapper. I even selected his DMBreakfast for Unreal as one of the top ten multiplayer maps of all time in Online Arena magazine (little kids LOVE it). The guy knows how to do realism. Unfortunately, in this level, he's made it unplayable as a result. Allow me to explain. The level is set on and around a large ship, and he's opted to go with an effect that totally destroys framerate - moving sheets of snow. While this is nifty and all, it completely destroys the game from a playability standpoint. I'm running a P2-400 with a Hercules Ultra TNT2, and the entire level sputtered as a result of this one feature. Quite sad, really, as I'll never get to see just how good this thing could be. That point being made, and it's the deadly one, the layout of this map is exceptional. Great item placement, a nice mover from the bowels of the ship on up to the top, three Kegs 'O Health, one below deck, one in a shack and one out on the forward mast, all sorts of nice amenities throughout, including a couple of portraits. Weapons are placed equally nicely, and there's even a tunnel through the ice that leads to a sniping ledge (it should be slippery) and down to the shacks. There's some other nice tricks in here, but due to the frame rate, it's all a moot point. It's even hard to decide how many players would be appropriate, although a minimum of six seems about right. I can't believe I'm bashing one of John's maps, which uses a couple leftover Unreal textures, but I am. This guy is aces, believe me, but a deathmatch level lives and dies with framerate, and this one just doesn't have it. Check out some of John's other efforts for better examples of his work. This is not for playing. |

| Sen045 | Rating: 10 | | Fuck framerates and fuck flow, this is my all-time favorite map :D No, seriously.
| Nightmare | Rating: 0 | | Looks awesome, runs slower than molasses in winter.
| Lestat | Rating: 5 | | This map is now rated a 5 and climbing. This map was really ocool, except the snow really made it slooowww. But right now as I speak I am playing it with my new computer, a 1 gig athlon with 256 megs of ram (soon to be upgraded to 512) and it is running faster than it used to, now it doesnt look half bad, I predict by next year, a top notch computer system will handle this map. John was simply ahead of his time :)
| C.H.U.D. | Rating: 7 | | Despite the slowdown, I really get a kick out of this map. Same with his BigRig and Cargo maps.
| Lustmord | Rating: 4 | | If its just the snow slowing it down, it should be taken out. I'd love to give it an 8.5, which it deserves, except for the playability issues.
| Turboman | Rating: 7 | | Slow? godlike, ran better then davidm's lowpolypack.
| Everyone | Rating: 10 | | F*cking beautiful. I'm speechless.
| combdude 02-17-2003 11:15 AM MST | Rating: 9 | | THIS IS ONE GODDAMN GREAT MAP......ANY 1 THAT THINKS ITS NOT SHOULD BE HIT WITH BIG HEAVY ROCKS. But, i gave it a 9 cause it is kinda laggy when ur outside the ship.
| SirTahngarth 02-17-2003 05:34 PM MST | Rating: 5 | | The mapper should try using PrecipitationGenerator. It is quite effective for creating a reasonable amount of snow without killing the framerate too badly. (set the intensity to more than one though, and ur fps goes out the window :) ).
| Smeerkat 02-17-2003 07:39 PM MST | Rating: 5 | | Very low FPS, but you must download this map to check out the work. Impressive!
| ZxAnPhOrIaN 02-18-2003 04:00 PM MST | Rating: 2 | | thx everybody for advice, i HATE maps that are really framerate killers.
| Louise 02-18-2003 09:55 PM MST | Rating: 9 | | Super great map by Angel.I play that map whit 15 bots and it run so smouth. And every thing to max.
| RJGexplode 09-25-2004 05:35 AM MDT | Rating: 10 | | This.. Map... OWNZ!!!
| NeoNite 09-25-2004 11:25 AM MDT | Rating: 4.5 | | It looks good/ok, I like the atmosphere of this map. Spooky,creepy... There are too many snow sheets though.
Gameplay: practically non-excistant. Unless you like cramped quarters-indoor fighting. Outside isn't "all that" either. This map has no real flow, whatsoever. Bots also perform pretty shitty; Sometimes when they fall in the water, they won't swim up to the surface and drown. They get stuck near a table inside the ship, trying to grab a health vial. They forget about the rl most of the times, and totally ignore the sniper spot.
I have most of Angelhearts' maps. Most require a different approach compared to "normal" deathmatch maps. I'm thinking of dm-rorkesdrift here. And maybe dm-meatdance. (imo) But this one just doesn't work.
| Jez 11-09-2004 07:19 PM MST | Rating: 2 | | Nah.
| Sergeant Todd 11-09-2004 10:00 PM MST | Rating: 9 | | Folks, I'm one of those 'unlucky' souls out here with a 4 year old Athlon and an old GeForce card, so I can't really play this absolutely gorgeous map...however, not all is lost, I'm using it as a screensaver, spectating with no bots...ha ha..
Well, it's either upgrade my machine to play it(hold on, no money - maybe Christmas gift....nah!), or just wait for a low-poly version to hit NC???...wait, I'll try the map at low texture and detail settings.....whatta shame...
