DM-Adversity (UT99)
A tight little one-on-one map that's not named as such. Gentle visuals, intriquing architecture, and simply fun gameplay make this one a map to add to your collection.
AWE: 2.0
Texture work is nicely varied yet theme consistent. A kind of industrial/warehouse theme that's somewhere between the two, the ceiling support accents are rusted metal, the walls are grey concrete with a very well aligned stripe, the floors are a lovely cement/stone tile, and everything's trimmed off well. nary a misalignment to see, the textures were well chaosen and very well applied. The darker accents on the walls, ceiling supports, and trim contrast nicely with the lighter colored wall, foor, and ceiling 'body' areas of the forms. The light work is quite nice as well. Nothing's overpowering in terms of brightness or color. The colors are well chosen and accent the map nicely. I would say that the lighting doesn't create enough contrast between light and dark areas, for example, under the 'bridge' in the small hallway that joins the two rooms. But the covered/lower areas are dimmer than the rest, however they blend a little too well promoting the perspective that some of the map could appear a little 'ambient lit' even though it certianly isn't. The architecture is nice. Nothing too complicated nor overly simplistic. The sweeping ceiling supports, the subtle floor height variations dotted through the map, and the layered ramps all combine to form pleasing frag-space. My only complaint here is that the architecture could have opene up a little more and shown a few more areas of the skybox. Although the texture work is the map's best visual aspect, neither of the other two areas skimp either. The lighting hase nice color and brightness but could have been more constrasting in covered areas. The architecture was elegant but a little more grandeur/openess would have been appreciated.
BUILD: 2.5
The BSP work here is nicely complicated. Everything seems to fit together well with no HOMs in sight. The lifts work well although the bots will not use the one by the minigun. They are tagged with nicely approriate sounds. Somehting complaetely lacking is the use of ambient sounds. There is an adequate water ambient sound that does the job but seems to indicate rushing, fast moving water whereas this water is slow. Also, the areas looking out onto the skybox seem like one should hear wind rushing by the windows or something. Mostly we just don't hear anything. Finally, triggered sounds are completely lacking. In general, there's no general ambient sound and the locational sound is either missing or somewhat badly chosen. This is pretty much the only downside to the build.
CAST: 2.5
This is definately a 1 on 1 map. Anything more would be overkill. The map is almost too small actually. Largely consisting of two rooms with a lift on either end and a ramp in each it has very few side routes or options to get away for a moment and catch your breath. A curved circular hallway will lead you to a pool with the shield belt but that's the only superpickup in the map and that's all the map needs. It's quite well placed for 1 on 1 as you're vulnerable swimming in the water to get it, the hallway leading to it is stinged with health vials which give away the fact that you're going to get it, and the entrances to the hallways are tight which means getting out can be a challenge. Unless the other player ignores the fact you're in there, expect resistence when trying to exit. Other than that, there's z-axis throughout the map - not much cross-over z, but more edge/ramp z-axis. Still it does the job well. I would say the only deficiencies to the map are related to the overall size being rather small even for 1 on 1, and that it's very difficult to escape a pursuer. In general, some excellent gameplay with size and its effects being the only conceivable downside.
Adversity is a map that will challenge both you and your adversary. It's quite nice to look at, polished and streamlined, with sound and grandeur and/or openness being its only visual deficiencies. Although sound was lacking, gameplay makes up for it. A very tight map for the 1on1 fans out there, it belongs in your collection. For the rest of us, it's not a required download, but certainly worth checking out. |

| [IMD1]KillRoy 04-02-2003 09:52 AM MST | Rating: 9 | | If you like 1on1, make sure you get this map!! Still I think this is one of the best 1on1 map out there. Looks good + plays good = very good.
I realy like the size of the map, many 1on1 maps are too big IMO. This is just right. There is noway you have to 'find' your enemy, he /she is right around the corner.
This is realy a map where you can cut off the other player in is way and frag him :-). But then again, so can he! :-o
A must have!
| Chrysaor 04-02-2003 05:35 PM MST | Rating: 9 | | I think this map is a bit awkward in areas. The wall texture is stupid, but its fresh and rich, so I guess I'll ignore that. Gameplay is solid, maybe unoriginal, but what isn't these days. This is my favorite Ictus map.
| Fodder McFly 04-02-2003 06:04 PM MST | Rating: 9 | | This map was worth the download and I am glad I took the time to download it. The bots ran very well and the map flowed wonderfully. The map was also very visually appealing. Good lighting. Great map! Download this map now!
| Homeslice 04-02-2003 11:28 PM MST | Rating: 9 | | I was wondering when people would comment on this map. This map is l33tness on a stick. Too bad Ictus didn't make another one after this one.

| darth_weasel 04-29-2005 08:50 PM MDT | | Yeesh this is an oldie. I always liked it. Very clean and solid and the 1on1 layout is pretty hardcore.
| redfist 04-29-2005 10:33 PM MDT | Rating: 6.5 | | Hmm.it feels a little claustrophobic, not because it is small it is elongated, making it feel you wish teribly there was a side door so somthing. The map looks very refreshing, color and lighting. My biggest complaint is you can get right next to thos windows, but the projectiles still explode and don't go through,if he left it unblocked ,but then put a cloudzone right outside of the window, mabye,it's a tricky problem. I like the map,not too keen on the DM action.
| Dage00 04-30-2005 05:51 AM MDT | Rating: 8.5 | | a little small,even with 1-0n-1 but its a good map
| RayZidane 04-30-2005 01:37 PM MDT | Rating: 8 | | omfg redfist.....haha....stop complaining! can you do better then that?
| Ryan Ictus Brucks 04-30-2005 05:19 PM MDT | | You guys know this map is the same as DM-1on1-Albatross in UT2004 right? And I am a full time Epic LD now so you'll see mah maps in Envy.
This review is a bit later than I was expecting :)
| haadstall 05-04-2005 02:49 AM MDT | | I don't know when did I download DM-Aberrance but still wondering of its perfect construction. Ictus (no doubt) is one of those artificial mapmakers who build their levels with Great Love of an Architector. It seems to be foolish, but I'm wainting for another nu mapz from Ictus...
| madscientist327 05-13-2005 07:46 PM MDT | Rating: 9.5 | | Almost perfect. :)
| ArcadiaVincennes 05-14-2005 09:50 PM MDT | | Ictus - congrats on getting the job at Epic and considering Albatross is one of my personal favorites, I can certainly see the layout is the same now that you mention it. Thanks for checking in! Sorry about the time from upload to review. Looking forward to more of your work...
