Just when I thought the mapping scene was really coming dangerously close to cardiac arrest, here comes the BW Map Pack. I have no idea how long it has been released, but I downloaded it and played it. The author essentially took a whole bunch of Epic maps from the original UT, and retextured them with white textures, as if everything was black and white. I was playing some of the maps and I just sat here, in my computer room, holding an orange soda, playing UT, and thinking to myself, "I could be sleeping with my girlfriend right now". Then I thought to myself, "who would take all these maps and texture them in white and release a map pack?" The author, named "Aahz", states in his readme that he did this because we wanted to see UT lighting effects against...whiteness I guess. I dunno how good old Aahz came to the conclusion that he would do this, perhaps he was out drinking with his buddies, and in his drunken stupor he came across a traveling magic donkey, who happened to be smoking pot. The donkey said, "It would be so totally wicked if the world was like, it totally black and white." and then Aahz said, " Dude! Youre a talking donkey! And youre a genious, Ill make a UT mappack with all black and white maps!" and then the donkey says, "Did you know that Money is the incarnation of greed, that is why coins taste like bitter battery acid" and then Aahz says "Donkey dude, all the UT maps will be black and white, and everyone will love it cus it will be like when the world was all black and white, like in the 1940s" and then the donkey would scream like a insane baby ninja, and Aahz will freak out and scream in fear and puke all over his nuts and.... ...and what was I talking about? Oh yes, the mappack. I dont see why anyone would bother playing these maps, much less downloading them. I mean, whats the point? Honestly, I am asking anyone, ANYONE, please give me a reason. I am begging you, I really am. Cus I just do not get it. I mean, it just seems so unnecassay, does it not? Almost as unnecessary as a long review about a crap mappack.....oops. Well that is my review, if you think the Prophet is insane, play the pack and then you will understand. This is more unnecessary then taking an old UT Epic map YOU DID NOT MAKE and converting it to UT2K3. But, unlike the majority of those kinds of maps, the author, good old Aahz gives his credit to the real authors, so the NC rules of engagment clearly state that I have to now give this pack a score higher than zero, but since I only have to rate what it is exactly the author added himself, I can safely give this map the lowest score possible and still be within the legal boundaries of common reviewing law. It is kinda like a 80 year old man dating an 18 year old schoolgirl. She is 18, so the law says it is ok! The Prophet is speechless: Play it if you want, although I think all of you will safely agree that this is just so....well why? Huh? WHY? By the way, I still love it when you people release maps like these or maps where you convert an Epic map into a "LE" OR "GE" or whatever, which is changing of a few guns or exporting the map into UT2K3 and totally fuggering it up...and you still have the gut instinct to add the following lines to the end of your readme: You are NOT allowed to commercially exploit this level, i.e. put it on a CD or any electronic medium that is sold for money without my explicit permission! An original thing to do would have been, e.g., to convert the maps to true black & white with all the necessary shades of gray, to play UT with a genuine 1940s-TV-feeling (original but still completely wacky, come to think of it...) ;-) But that of course would have necessitated a decent effort. If I read Mister Prophet's review correctly, his criticism of this pack boils down to the fact that he simply does not understand its purpose. His mistake, as I understand it, is in approaching this package from the start as though it were one of the LE-GE-etc. "conversions" with which he correctly takes umbrage - that is, assuming that it is opportunistic hack-work of the sort that has become more common lately, rather than the serious examination of lighting aesthetics that is Aahz's clearly stated intent. When I first downloaded and looked at this package when it came out in 2001, I immediately appreciated it in the context of a mappers' tool: not so much something to be played (although the maps remain perfectly playable), as an enquiry into a particular aspect of level design - a means to examine the lighting of the levels without the distraction or distortion of the textures it is normally seen upon. Since Mister Prophet's paraphrasing of this aim in the review is rather poor, I quote selectively from the readme: "I wanted to take a look at the lighting in various UT levels, just to see the effects the level artists were trying to achieve. (...) The lighting can be subtle or vibrant, and in many cases accentuates the textures to make them more vibrant. The overall effect is somewhat stunning... and the levels are quite fun to play. I didn't plan to release these to the public, but after a few requests, I decided to bundle them together. (...) Full credit goes to the orginal Epic authors of these levels. I obtained permission from Epic to make these changes and make the edited levels available to the community." One could still argue to what degree the package is successful in its aim, and perhaps how it is even possible to rate something like this at all given the specificity of this aim and the degree to which the editor himself disavows credit. One could also argue whether the editor's intent is relevant at all in writing a map review for a general audience. Nevertheless, the tone and content of Mister Prophet's review and most of the subsequent comments seem needlessly insulting, to say the least, to a mapper whose original maps are in my opinion among the more technically and artistically inventive in the community. Take a look at AS-Coup, the IGI conversions, or the monumental DM-DOM-CTF-AS-TF8472 if you are disinclined to take my word for it. As an admittedly non-mapping UT player nevertheless interested in the artistic side of mapping, I personally found this experiment fascinating. The rating above represents an average of my estimation of the pack's success in its stated aim (8) and my general opinion of the base levels used (7). Out of context, the poem is actually pretty amusing, though. :) Addendum re: Sir Tahngarth's comments - In retrospect the phrase "raving idiots" was excessive (it has been deleted, and the whole business reedited, hopefully for the better), and it was not my intention to suggest a stereotype for NC forum-users. Nor was it my intention to flame, as such, although I can see I was perhaps trying to couch my argument overdramatically. That said, while I see Sir Tahngarth's rationale - if differing with him in thinking that the pack should have been released - I still find the review itself and most (a word I'll agree I should have emphasized the first time) of the subsequent comments needlessly insulting and dismissive. I am inclined to think the pack should not have been reviewed at all, or given a "No Rating" if such a thing is possible. This was clearly a work of experimentation for the creator's curiosity, and not something that was really meant to be played, or released. The thing is, at least in UED3, there is a "lighting only" view that turns everything including static meshes white to make the lighting more visible. you dont need to create and save maps to see what its like. Playing UT in a bunch of maps is not fun. I'm not here to rate the map(s) on my understanding of their purpose or how great/intersting i think that puropse is. and with the exception of flybys/cutscenes which cant actually be played, i look at the maps from a gameplay perspective. Now you might want to look at this BWmapPack once or twice, but keep it on my hard drive, no way. It might be an interesting sight to see once if you're curious about the inner details of UT's lighting capabilities, but other than that it has no value, especially since the maps themselves are rips of the stock maps and not original (although i have to hand it to the mapper as he claims he specifically got permission) Also, the mapper's previous works (all of the ones you mention are excellent) do not in anyway excuse this material that shouldnt have been released. Even though i see a lot of idiots around here, hardly all of them are. and most of the people here seem to agree that this pack is not worth keeping. so you mean to say that everyone who has loaded a page here or posted a comment is an idiot? you ought to be banned for that flame. I do concur with this, as people often would like to make a response without giving a rating but this is not currently possible with the NC system. perhaps something should be done about that. They were good. I've heard of re-uploads with few changes. Not so good. I've heard of re-uploads with no change at all. Extremely bad. And now, I've heard of a re-upload of Epic maps but now colored Black and White... Which already explains the map-name... "BWMapPack" = "Black & White Map-pack" [EDIT] CORRECTION TO ALL WHO DESPISE AND HAVE INSULTED THE AUTHOR OF THIS MAP-PACK. CHECK THE OTHER MAPS HE MADE IN HIS NC3 PROFILE. I don't think he's a n00b for doing just one stupid thing.
