Maps like this get me hard.
Hourences needs no introduction, and neither does his contributions to the community. But when he released CTF-Addien for UT2K3, the map got a lot of mixed opinions. While nobody would deny the map had an involving atmosphere as well as being one of the top 3 best looking maps to date, it’s game play turned a lot of people off.
Well here is Addien ][, or as it is known more commonly, Addien-Dwy. Dwy is more of a “finished” map then a sequel, this map makes the original release seem like a beta. The map has been greatly enhanced in terms of gameplay, while the visuals only get better.
Visually, the map looks and feels better than the first Addien. While the original segments remain virtually untouched, the added sections give the place more depth. There is now a larger cave area, as well as many new corridors and some original jump pad additions (instead of having some ghey circle with neon lights that serve as a “pad”, there are certain pipes on the floor that are cracked and shoot an upstream of gas, which propel the player through the ceiling and up into the room above). Thankfully, Hourie managed to add the new additions and keep the original feel of the place intact. It still fells like a 19th century estate, only now it is more menacing. The amount of detail in here is unprecedented for a UT2K3, there is simply no other map around that has as many small decorative bits added to it. Books lay thrown about on stairwells, over floors, ontop of tables. Blood splatters moisten the floors and walls of certain spots. Overturned furniture lay in clumps as old styled lamps glow in the darkness, rusted pipes run through the walls as water puddles dampen the ground. Carpets lay on floors as webs and tapestry hang from the walls and ceilings. Loose rocks and wooden planks lay around in pieces as moss, roots, and vines hang from cave mouths. Mist emits from vent ducts as moonlight shines through the massive windows. The visuals are only matched by the sound, which give the appearance life. This place creaks, drips, fumes, and groans, once again Hourences proves his mastery of sound. No other map sounds this convincing.
Game play is much better this time around, there are more paths, alternate routes, alternate routes from the alternate routes, and just as many escape and defense points. The flag bases are marked with colored chalk for a change (which was my idea) instead of bright blue and red lights. For anyone who said the old map was cramped, they should be prepared to eat their words. This is a bigger and badder Addien. Playabilty may take a nosedive for some people, but fear not! Hourences has made changes to some of the decorations that populate the map, so if you run on lower settings, there will be less detail to hinder your PC. Unfortunately this reduces the map’s atmosphere, but some people might prefer that. The map flows fairly well, you won’t really snag anywhere, or so I noticed after 7 games. Not the best CTF gameplay you’ve played, but above average and more befitting for a Hourences map than the original.
The Prophet’s Verdict: This is Addien as it was meant to be. The gameplay still doesn’t equal the righteousness of the graphics, but at least it leaves you satisfied this time around. Clutch. Oh and don’t forget to read the story in the read me, which was written by yours truly;)

| Doctor Nick 07-18-2003 05:19 PM MDT | Rating: 8 | | Definitely. Still looks amazing and it feels so much less cramped, and actually plays well.
| Claw 07-19-2003 08:04 PM MDT | Rating: 8 | | Hmm. I am actually a little disappointed. It's still addien, it's still beautiful; and I like the new layout. But I think Hourences could have done better. It think he rushed it a little bit. Hourences is right, I am deaf :o And I still can't walk outside ;( On the plus side, I enjoyed the original jumpads. I can't really say I like this one much more than the original. The additions give to the map, but they also take something away, because they are obviously not as refined and polished. There is water that doesn't splash, I couldn't help noticing. I guess people who were more critical of Addien may like this one better; for me, it's just different.
And Shadow - it's only an example. :p

j/k nice map:)
| Secret_Squirrel 07-19-2003 10:58 AM MDT | Rating: 8 | | Nice update as far as playability is concerned, but as far as atmosphere i think a little has been lost. The problem is i dont know what i would have wanted differently :/ never mind...
| Shadowlurker 07-19-2003 01:10 PM MDT | Rating: 9 | | This is better, though it still seems weird... the more I play it, the more the coridoors seem to make the layout strange, but I just dont know why.
Atmosphere isn't decreased. Scary caves = more atmosphere, IMO.
And claw - it's only a splash ;)
| Fear 07-19-2003 10:22 PM MDT | Rating: 10 | | Awesome Map! Really like the improvements, one of my favorite maps now! if you like CTF, GET THIS MAP!!
| Luggage 07-20-2003 07:59 PM MDT | Rating: 9 | | A definite improvement! Really like it, and it plays pretty good too. It probably would have impressed me even more if I hadn't known the original... :) Too bad you can't enter the thing in the MSUC... hehe
| DialAJunk 07-21-2003 03:13 AM MDT | Rating: 8 | | This blows the first version out of the water in every conceivable way (except the theme, which was awesome to begin with).
I will actually be burning this one on CD, instead of deleting it after one match, like the first one.
GOOD JOB HOURENCES, and thank you! Top notch CTF map, now.
| DeRailer 07-21-2003 01:04 AM MDT | Rating: 8 | | I'm not really a fan of the first map's gameplay, but this one improved by a ton. It's actually big enough for 3on3 now. The sounds are, wow. Simplily wow. Can't really think of other ways to describe it. The mood, the setting, two thumbs up.
| Obi-Wan 09-02-2003 03:30 PM MDT | Rating: 8 | | yes yes! me like! the books, the weelchair, the bananas.. buy buy buy!! improvement fest! or something .. but no 9... it's that little gameplay issue... but whatever!! the wheelchair just 0wns me!
| Aggressor 07-21-2003 02:08 PM MDT | Rating: 8 | | Hm, I think I actually like the previous version some more...
| Sexmachine 07-22-2003 04:21 PM MDT | Rating: 9 | | Stunning visuals and fantastic ambient sounds lead to a great atmosphere - very nice :)
| Tonnberry 08-05-2003 03:27 PM MDT | Rating: 7 | | If you split a rating into 2 categories which are gameplay and visuals, and visuals add 8 points to the rating while gameplay does only 2, this map would get a 9.
If gameplay adds 8 points and visuals only 2, this map yould get a 5 or a 6.
If you split it up to 5 and 5 this map gets a 7.
It's up to you how you rate maps, but i think gameplay is much more important in fps games, but due to the incredible and stunning visuals of the map i still give it a 7. Hour tried to add good gameplay to the original addien which had like no gameplay, but he failed. This one has gameplay, but it's still not very ass kicking so this map stays as it was: A impressive show of what you can do with the new Engine.
I'd love to see a kickass gameplay map from Hour with some über visuals like in addien.

| avatar 09-02-2003 11:56 AM MDT | Rating: 9 | | Well done, creative uses of new paths. I do agree that something seems to have been lost from the previous version - but for me, Dwy is far more playable and can hold more people without getting too crowded. That's the trade off.. playability vs pretty visuals. I play IG, this map works great for it.
