Anyone who knows me is aware that I have a special place in my heart for 1 on 1 maps. I found this one waiting around in the request box and decided that I didn’t want to subject myself to all the crap the “community” is making lately (95% of the time anyway, a few mappers actually still make great maps) and thought maybe I’ll check out some 1 on 1 maps. Enter DM-1on1-LostLands
The map takes place is a enclosed terrain zone consisting of up and low hills and canyons with some locked doors and buildings here and there. Overall I found the architecture and terrain just fine, not “grab-my-nuts-and-scream” …but delightful nonetheless. What didn’t perk my man stick was the lighting. I felt there was too much use of erratic colors, it made the atmosphere seem like an indecisive jumble. You have a red moon casting light overhead the map, yet orange clouds skim overhead. And the map had a strange variety of overbearing white/blue lighting with reddish/purple touches here and there. The skybox has these tall white walls which I can only assume were intended to be snowy peak but end up looking like a gigantic broken egg shell littered outside the map. Those are lit blue too. To top it off, there are odder color variations by some light sources I noticed, you can see so in the pic. I felt the map was robbed a good chance to make a true impression here, if the author goes over the lighting with a fine comb (pick a sky color, ok?) and makes a better skybox to support it, then the map seem more complete. Marred by a wack lighting scheme and some texture misalignments. Oh well, still looks ok.
Gameplay. Well it certainly fits 2 players just dandy, but the layout seems sort of random and unbalanced. But hey, it’s a terrain zone. You go up some hills, down others, cross some gaps, and power-ups reside in risky locations. Fruckin Shlit. May seem a bit “seen it before” but done in a good way. What isn’t good is the invisible walls that snag you and brushes that seem to collide wrong. This kinda stuff pissed me off, and will piss of the casual 1 on1 gamer also. Flow and speed are important in 1on1, and these weird invisible “snatch” locations that seem to be BSP errors bring the quality down abit and become an increasing annoyance that will shatter your fun factor quickly. Especially when your running backwards while Cali is launching rocket at you, and you find yourself stuck on an invisible wall, unable to move through the air in all directions, and Cali continues to launch missiles into your balls. It is also possible to get shot up one of the rock walls by a powerful blast and get caught. Ouch baby, very ouch.
The Prophet’s Verdict: Could have been a better map if not for a few glaring lighting and BSP errors that spoiled my fun. Most you making comments seem to like it anyway, so this review is for the author’s benefit, pay attention to the bugs I mentioned and try to avoid them in the future.

| TNT 04-28-2003 09:04 PM MDT | Rating: 6 | | first thing that came to mind was unreal1,to me this map looks and plays as an unreal1 map,and there nothing wrong with that unreal1 is still a great game, there good use of terrain and lighting and sounds in this map and the gun placement was ok,only thing that i did'nt like was, and this is coming from a mapers point of view is that all ammo, guns, etc. needs to be set level to the ground that it lies on,some where half in half out,i dont think that you need to added on its fine as a 1v1 map, good work
| Fodder McFly 04-28-2003 09:29 PM MDT | Rating: 8 | | Holy shnikes! This map definitely had the "Unreal" feeling going. I was waiting for a Skaarj to jump out at me. I liked the doors not opening, keeping the map tight enough for 1-on-1. On the other hand, make the doors open and expand the map. That way you can get rid of the 1-on-1 title. Very nice map visually. Definitely post an updated version. Can't wait to see it! Oh yeah, way to have screenshots!!!!
| Cyrss's Itch 04-29-2003 08:26 AM MDT | Rating: 6 | | Looks oldish but passable as UT map.
Where can I d/l Realistic Weapons Mod ???
| gyokusai 05-09-2003 08:19 AM MDT | Rating: 5 | | I like the atmosphere, the terrain, and indoors being off-limit is fine with me. But I really do like playing fast 1-on-1's, and I H-A-T-E getting stuck in invisible traps inmidst a fierce firefight. (The Prophet's puhdy friggin' right, there.) As much as I like this map, these traps make it almost unplayable--especially the spot where you come down from the shin armor location. Iron them out, upload it as V 2.0 or something, and it will be cool (and in the neighborhood of "7", btw).
| Algus 05-17-2003 05:34 AM MDT | Rating: 5 | | Ouch! Who's grabbed my back? I cannot move, I'm stuck in a crack! Somebody help me! I'm cannot flee! ...Respawning now, thanks to Flak.
| Draconis 06-27-2003 02:07 PM MDT | Rating: 8 | | Very nice lightning, and textures are of a good quality to. But indeed the updated version should include the inside of the buildings. I give it a 8. PS the bots do kindof well to.....
| Tomlord 10-01-2003 11:30 AM MDT | Rating: 6 | | Eh..... this map looks like some bad assault map. But than i try to play some rounds and than I see, this map is not too bad. But I think, its need some interiors
| Shao 10-14-2003 09:15 PM MDT | Rating: 7 | | Good Job.
| Liquid Payment 10-29-2003 07:36 AM MST | Rating: 9 | | The bots get stuck all over the place but against my friends this map is very much fun. There are problems but who cares the other humans run into the exact same problems so it balances everything out. This map is fun to play and in the end is that not why I bought this game in the first place? I believe it is!
| EvilSwanky 12-13-2003 10:34 AM MST | Rating: 4 | | Sometimes strange architecture, buildings in small Moutainpeaks. Lighting seems to be ok, but could have some more contrast in it. Playability was bad, you are often stopped by the terrain :/ And Bots only use Minigun : Well, this won't be a keeper on my harddrive.
| Eddy Merckx "The Ripper" 01-28-2004 11:02 AM MST | Rating: 8 | | nice work but an updated version with building, you can enter would be better, great atmospere nonetheless grtz
| Denny 05-19-2005 01:05 AM MDT | Rating: 6 | | I can see why everyone has problems with the invisible clips, and i mean yeah they are a problem but there not very big and it's not like you can't go around them. I don't think you get totally stuck on them.
Anyway, this is a really cool level, i like the colored lighting and the design is pretty good, the bots play descent.
I hope you update this KaMi, get rid of those invisble clips and like said before make the buildings enterable, hence making the map bigger, that would be awesome! Please consider doing it KaMi :)
