I realized that this was a pretty good map when I thought it was ok from the very start...just follow me, would ya? After getting totally destroyed by the bots the first time through it, I played it again. It was then that I realized that this map isn't ok at all...it's great! My initial reaction was that this is another gothic-type map because of the similar textures, but that's not the case here. It gives you the feeling that this thing was made for a deathmatch, and a damn good one at that! Download it!
RumblePitt is a large and generally open map with many large rooms to make for fragging on every axis available and many, many places to go. It flows fairly well, and chances are, there is a bot somewhere stalking you at any given time. Too many times I was running along looking for some meat when I start seeing the floor in front of me beginning to get chipped away by offending bullets. By the time I locate the source, somebody has dropped in from behind without me noticing and I get corn-holed with flak! ÝFun?Ý You bet!!!
Personally, I would add in some more weapon locales, as I had trouble finding something to defend myself well enough against the baddies after respawning...duplicate some of them. There is enough ammo laying about, however, and I never actually found the udamage until I saw one of the bots drop down from where it's at. This is where I proceeded to hear the terrifying scream of the amp and a minigun ripping my sorry @$$ to pieces!
The worse thing about this bad-boy is the spot with the healing pool (yes, it replenishes your health) where a lighting effect is used. I am really surprised that the author even left this in here, especially because it's used in a spot with a raised and twisting stairway...this is why RumblePitt didn't get a higher grade. It's the only spot where the frame rate drops...and it really drops! There is also one small brush misalignment on another awkwardly raising and twisting stairway. This style of stairway is extremely difficult to build perfecty, so I feel that Shamus still did one helluva job on it!
Pro's
- Pretty good looking and large map with all sorts of places to go
- The carefull use of lighting and textures just shouts that RumblePitt is a place made to get hurt....a lot
- Bots are down-right mean
Con's
- Weapons seem too sparce in contrast of the map's vast size
- That one lighting effect has got to go!

This review is a conversion from the original non-database review, and as such, the gameplay ratings have all been set to equal the original rating. In my opinion it rates just as well now, as it did then; I just got done playing on it for the first time, you see. Turned up in a Map rotation this evening. This is an old review, and I'm surprised i haven't seen this map before, but it's a killer. Lovely. Amazing Z-axis action (higher than most maps). The frame drop Maz noticed was not noticeable to me, on my trusty Mac G3/400 + Voodoo 3 3000, so what with today's higher poly allowances, that's no longer a problem, apparently. This map simply ownz. Download it! -- FuzzBuster
