This level is your kind of "magical kingdom" sort of level.
The level is basically comprised of two castles, floating in the air surprisingly enough. There's two routes of attack, a normal route, across a centrally located bridge, and a more heavily used under-castle route. The castle themselves, aren't really castles relatively speaking; they're just three concentric circles, with two towers at the front. Item placement is poor at best. The sniper rifles are located at the back of the castles, and offer no enhancement on gameplay. There are places to snipe from, but are made obsolete by the under-castle route. This is one of the things I absolutely hate in a CTF level; where the author tries to cram in every single weapon - and in bad places. For example, two Bio-Rifles are placed on the under-castle route. There is no point in this as the under-castle route consists of suspended pathways, floating in the air.
The bots play well, but only use the under-castle route as means for attack. They also don't snipe. They do defend effectively, and guard the lift next to the flag. Another bad point on this level is the game speed. I'm not sure what it is, but something on this level makes this level in particular play slowly on my computer. The skybox, whilst fitting the theme wonderfully, looks very weird in the corners. There are a lot of texture and brush miss-alignments scattered throughout this level, especially on the under-castle route. Lighting isn't very good. There's not enough variation in light brightnesses, and even then, the most of the level is too bright.
Whilst being a new idea, CTF-Skycastles severely lacks a professional finish. To be honest, this level won't last very long on many UT players hard drives, as there are many other better "two-forts" levels. Sorry. This level isn't a bad try, but could have been so much better. |
