| Wesley "Boreas" van Dijk 03-23-2006 05:04 PM MST | Rating: 5.5 | | Hmmmz... not really a map pack for the tactical BR player... as the name implies, the maps provided are all very action focused. Downside on all the maps: I haven't had a single incoming ball while playing. Bots don't seem to care...
- Criostation > 6.5 Well, this map pretty much shows you how the rest is going to be. Each base has 2 lockers with different weapons, left and right have Double Damage or 50 shield. Looks okey, plays okey, but bots don't know shit about how to play the game. - Delirium > 4 Same concept, but with jumppads. Other than that, it is a cube. Waste of time. No fun, bots don't work too well. Author didn't even bother to give it a description. - GravityKills > 7.5 The best map of the pack. Looks far better than the rest, plays ok, and though bots still aren't doing too hot in here. But, no description! - Inferno > 5 Doesn't look very great, except for the stock skybox. Boring gameplay, bots really suck. - Subzero > 5 Doesn't look too interesting. Horrible gameplay, bto's still trying to figure out which way to go.
I think this whole action BR thing has some potential (damn, I use that word too much) but it's not worked out too well. With one exception (guess which one) I won't be keeping these. Shame.
| Mazza 03-25-2006 12:56 AM MST | | I admit the bots are not a challenge to play with. I didn't put a lot of effort on setting their paths, but I did try. But playing BR with bots has always been frustrating for me even in stock maps, as they never manage to get near the goal, they just keep spamming each other and have no tactical programming in they'r AI. I always play with bots in masterfull or inhuman, and I've never seen a bot advance to get a pass, and if you try to do so yourself, they will pass the ball to you as soon as they see you in front of them, usually when there are 2 or more enemies firing at you :(
But the gameplay on the maps on this pack is great when playing online with other humans, specially with some teamwork. I also would suggest to play without using the translocator, the flow gets more tactical, but yet really intense
| Ironblayde 03-25-2006 10:03 PM MST | Rating: 2.5 | | I agree that the bots' performance in Bombing Run as a whole is less than admirable, but proper bot pathing in BR is still very important because of the dearth of servers out there.
These maps are small and spammy, with weapon lockers to start each player with an arsenal and very little cover to be had. People who like one-room slaughterhouses might want to have a look. Anyone who doesn't shouldn't even bother.
BR-CrioStation requires moving the ball a bit more than the other maps just because the goals are rotated so that the scoring line is parallel to the z-axis. Unfortunately it's unplayable offline because the goals aren't part of the path network.
BR-Delirium is one of the single ugliest maps I've ever beheld, the quintessential example of static mesh abuse. It's clearly designed for low gravity since there are jump pads on the walls and the ceiling. Not much fun at all, as it's just a giant box.
BR-GravityKills is, as Boreas said, probably the best of the pack, though that's not saying much. Bots are still pretty awful, and frequently kill themselves after getting the ball.
BR-Inferno is very boring as it's basically just a piece of terrain with a goal at either end. In this map the goals face the ball spawn, and are close enough that you can score immediately after picking up the ball, without even moving. With entirely human teams you can have someone guard the goal and intercept attempted field goals, but in a botmatch it's no good.
BR-SubZero has the dubious distinction of having the worst bot pathing in the pack. In a five-minute game, each bot will almost certainly rack up at least thirty suicides as they try and fail to jump from one bit of ice to another. Again you can score immediately after picking up the ball. The goals are not on the path network so the bots are useless anyway.
All in all, this pack is a disappointment. If you want to play two-on-two with some friends, then a few of the maps (BR-GravityKills and BR-CrioStation) might interest you, but the rest are no good at all.
