Who is this guy, and how does he keep making so many great maps?

Another fine piece of work from the mapper Ulukai. Not only is Locustwind a treat to play, it has also already gotten Ownage for obvious reasons. The only flaw I could find with this map is in texture alignment. That's it. Well, okay, maybe the sniper huts didn't have enough structural support for the roofs and didn't really provide ample surveylence zone to track a moving target. But I'll let my prefference for sniping go this time and have fun T-porting up behind those would be snipers in this map with a hot Flakcannon full of slag.


Locustwind, from the readme, is some kind of viral air-borne plague containment facility. Probably out there in space on an artic planet no doubt, well it feels that way. Plenty of routes exsist, each with their own flavor and the ability to change from one to another according to your fleeting tastes.


A most excellently exicuted map, here's why:

FUN: Easy to learn and nice on the eyes.

PLAYABILITY: Not in the low polys for sure, but less jagged due to the fact zones don't bleed into one another. (see more than one or through multiple zones at a given moment).

BOTS: Wish human players were as cooperative in being fragged. It was easy to surprise bots holding defense points from behind, like I mentioned about the snipers, but even in the Flag Bases it was possible.

FLOW: Full marks, I like being given choices that I don't end up regretting.

ITEMS: Yes, enough to keep the game moving. The ShieldBelt was a handy item to grab while getting the opposition's flag, and the U-Damage, well, let me say its Uber1337, those who know about crates on chains should find this power up very German.

THEME: *sniff* I like a good theme *sniff*. No, I have a cold.*sniff* It's just a cold. *sniff* Uh, Ulukai, it's just a cold isn't it?

ARCHITECTURE: Hands down a solid design and solid structure, if you don't count that sniper hut thingy.

LIGHTING: Cold outside, warm inside. Even the blue lights of the , uh, blue team felt warm after taking a stroll in the ice. Plenty of sourcing and great control.

TEXTURES: Like mentioned, minor (if you don't notice them) misalignments. Well placed and superb transitions make this map texture sweet.

SOUND: Could stand more ambient FX, especially ouside where a chill wind would cut at the exposed skin. The fan over the Shock Rifle sounds on, yet doesn't spin? Cool music choice, but that is always a matter of opinion.


Before I go to sleep tonight I'm going to make sure my computer isn't plugged ito the same circiut as the fridge. Last thing I need is a those two ganging up on me. I can beat a cold, but I can't beat this map on Godlike if my mouse has got freezer burn.

All the interior texturing and lighting is gay or borderline gay, the long windy corridors ruin the flow in parts, and the central section is bad. There is a lighting bug in the central area too, that turns players black. I still like the base architecture, tho' :)

Don't be stupid Ulukai, I can't decide whether you're lethargically modest or a passive egomaniac. You sound like DavidM............................... But I adore this map, maybe the windows in the corridors coulda had nice trim, but it's sweet other than that. And no the corridors aren't too long.

I like this map, and it woul'd have been one of my favourite custom maps... but the fact that you can translocate on the edge of the map is really lame :-( I hope that Locustwind][ will fix this problem.

Lightning isn't that bad. Pretty good,but not the best.

Looks and feels cold. Ulukai was not absent from school when they were teaching about warm and cold colours. The combination is great ! This map will stay by me ! There is one thing though. I like more open maps. These curved tunnels make me confused and I found myself running circles over and over again.... =O). And slimed myself more than once....heh.

This map looks great, the sounds are excellent, but, for some strange reason it glitches badly. Running down an empty corridor, you get a feeling like running through warp portals, like lots of invisible snags that make playing a bitch. I've never had this problem on any other map.

Doesn't look all that great, but plays fairly well. Does not deserve Ownage.

Jack dude, try typing flush in your console, hehe, that'll fix it. Nice map, I like the winter theme, fit in with the season, and the lighting was great, better then all of those white light maps. They need to get NC feedback forums (this thing) to remember PW's and nicks, typing them over and over sucks.

This map has decent looks. It's not what I'd call big, but there's quite a distance between bases, not that major though. Which somewhat influenced botplay imho.
I didn't get the feel of botgames being that smooth on this map.

The lay-out does work though. And back then (in 2001 I think) when I got this map I was impressed by the built.

I wish I could give this a 7, but the gameplay didn't impress me that much.

funny how when these great old maps pop up it's a like eerie or something (to run around and frag what seems like ghosts from the past) i mean, cool mappage from way back 4-5 years ago, is sometimes mind boggling to play them nowadays - some will say "what a crap map" well duh, if kaMi or paranoid were mapping back then their stuff would probably look like this, "old cool", which wasn't old when it was cool :) ulu was always cool... iirc, i noticed (few years ago) this one had like 125,000 dls from pu alone - that's a lot :)
