| Ironblayde 02-11-2006 02:33 AM MST | | The author's screenshot actually shows everything there is to see in the map. It's just a series of white cubes connected in a continuous loop using warp zones. Why anyone would want to play this, I'm not sure, but at least it works and has an appropriate name.
EDIT - To respond to the author's comments with something a little more specific: my problem is not that I'm averse to ideas that go against the usual order of things; it's that I don't believe this particular idea translates into an appealing gameplay experience. An idea can be original without being worthwhile. I recognize that you put a fair amount of work into this, but in my opinion, it plays very poorly. The fact that your map's cubes are connected to one another in unusual ways is not nearly enough to overshadow the fact that the map is simply a collection of cubes. Sorry to be harsh, but such are my feelings.
| Kantham 02-10-2006 11:09 AM MST | | i'll pass.
| Chuzhoi 02-10-2006 02:05 PM MST | | Didn't see the movie, but I liked the idea. Unfortunately, the map is not playable against bots - there are no bot paths and bots don't khow how to use the hatches. Maybe, playing against humans (large quantity of them) will be more interesting...
| Torn_Agressor 02-10-2006 02:44 PM MST | | i have seen the film, and although its an intresting concept to make a map out of this, this is a good example of bad construction
these so called "gravity shifts" *cough* fancy name for a not so fancy effect, walking through a warpzone which is rotated in a different direction..its actually very annoying
i think the map could have been alot better :P
suggestions if i were to a map based on the cube films:
in this map you can pretty much only go down, if you do manage to get into one of the side holes the *cough* "gravity shift" will pretty much take a poop on you, you should make an actual 3d maze of cubes, some of them with traps, and warpzones should only be used on the outer parts of the cube, let people go through the sides of the cube properly (mabey place a couple of ich brushes to act as steps)
the visuals are pretty bland, theres nothing going on really..just like the film, but this isnt the film and you can make it more intresting, visually i would prefer to base it off of the original cube film, the cubes were more intresting with funky patterns and stuff too, try merging several aspects from both films to create something better
| GTD-Carthage 02-11-2006 08:35 PM MST | Rating: 5.5 | | YAY for the extremely weird movie!!! I didn't exactly like it but a port from a movie to UT is a good attempt. :) I'd normally rate this 3 or something but I give a 5.5. The highest I can give for a small but "authentic" map.
[EDIT] xterm, remembering the movie, I saw that some of the characters were killed when the hypercubes started "moving" toward each other... you know, the toasty invisible wall part... and the traps... and the changing colors of light... do that in version two and you may get a 7.5! ;)
| Sicko Teddy 02-12-2006 03:51 PM MST | Rating: 4 | | tried the map. Unfortunately it's very boring and repetitive. Feels claustrophobic. Never seen the movie, but understand what you ment to do. Unfortunately the UT gameplay isn't good for that kind of map.
HEY! what if you do CTF? and warp zones switch up from one another!
your intention to make horizontal door lead to a vertical does not work. I just get stuck in between them and that's irritating.
| xterminator 02-13-2006 03:15 PM MST | | well yes i started doing a second version of the hypercube now with traps. i already made a trap, and i will make the "future over present trap" that incinerates you.i think i'll pass the razorsphere trap, it's too hard to do.
here's a pic with one of the traps: http://dopefish.3x.ro/mappics/Shot0006.bmp
LATER EDIT!!
Unfortunately it's very boring and repetitive. -->the film was the same: repetitive and that's stupid argument imho to this map Feels claustrophobic. --> well i dont think so but if u think so... Unfortunately the UT gameplay isn't good for that kind of map. --> well i dont think so but if u think so...
HEY! what if you do CTF? and warp zones switch up from one another! --> i am currently working on a version with traps, and on a ctf version
your intention to make horizontal door lead to a vertical does not work. I just get stuck in between them and that's irritating. --> reffering to that: there was a gravity shift when u enter on a door sideways and get out through a door that's on a floor. reffering to that i typed a message that's appearing when u anter tha trigger:"Double tap forward to jump without staying oddly in mid-air". the gravity shifts in which u enter sideways and get out through a door on top of a cube work perfectly
THE LATEST EDIT!! i won't be commenting anymore on this map! i'll submit a better version with traps and a ctf version afterwards
