Normally I have a soft spot for maps reminiscent of the original Unreal, no matter how lousy they are, but in this case I'm willing to make an exception. Because this, my friends, is possibly one of the worst UT maps I've ever played. Or maybe that should be "tried to play", since this isn't at all playable. Don't get me wrong now, this is not some pathetic noob map. Technically I suppose it's decent, and concept-wise it's nothing short of epic. But the execution... dear lord.
As far as I can tell (since the exterior is practically pitch black), the map consists of two humongous mountain islands separated by a stretch of water. Inside these mountains are a network of rooms, ramps and corridors so haphazard and confusing that it made me want to weep with frustration.
After six minutes of play, the score was still 0-0. As a matter of fact, everyone's frags also still read 0. Apparently I wasn't alone in being unable to figure out a way of getting into the enemy base -- or getting out of our own base for that matter. The bots were busy running back and forth like demented gerbils, while I was busy killing myself repeadedly with the impact hammer since nowhere I went made any sense.
TroAdoR: FYI, the gametype is called CAPTURE the flag. Which means that the point and the challenge of the game is getting the enemy flag and transporting it back to your home base, not finding the damn flag in the first place! Look, when I create a Find The Flag mod I'll give you a call, mkay?
I'll give the map 1 point for starting and 1 point for ambition. Now forget all you think you know about mapmaking, take a look at some good maps, and start over.
