Many centuries later, a force tunneled into the rock, building defensive tunnels along the way. Disguised by the acient surface, attackers were fortunate to find the location just in time to launch an attack on the project in hope of preventing the forces intentions of awakening the creature.

| Jebidiah 09-08-2005 10:49 PM MDT | Rating: 5.5 | | "Sweet," I said to myself. A new assault map! Of course I had to try it...
Things didn't start out well. No readme, and I like a readme. Ok, it can redeem itself... First impressions seemed good for a moment, but went downhill. The author does know what sort of atmosphere is moody, with erie glows, flames, and smoke, as well as a nice "green glow under walkway" effect, but it isn't all pulled together that well. The skybox is just an empty box, and upon close examination the terrain is sparesly detailed and has few layers. As the map progresses, you see some decent looking entryways with a cool viewscreen effect, some lame subtracted rectangle tunnels, a nice looking indoor cave and a final room that needs a makeover in several departments.
Gameplay is the real trouble here. Objective one consists of running across an open field while getting sniped at by the entire enemy team, who spawns right beside their rifles, then - this is the killer - standing in one spot long enough to raise a bridge that drops away if you leave the spot. Meaning, essentially, you are just waiting to see HOW MANY of the enemies will blow your head off simultaneously. I had to use god mode to get by. The next objective is easy. Destroy a gate you can almost see from your spawn location. Shock rifle it from safety before moving on. The rest of the objectives seem to be far to easy to defend, especially destroying gates and the final "monster." They take waaaay to long. On the way, there are also some odd tight passages and few route choices. The final room is a joke. You have to swim around at slug velocity while getting shot at and trying to destroy an emitter-enveloped near-invincible dragon statue that gives your FPS a big kick in the stones. And the bots... ...who did quite reasonably up to this point (they beat the first objective by clustering, sheeplike, around the switch, which I wish my teammates would have done), have only one strategy in the final room: Stand in mid air, on what could be a BSP error, I'm not sure, and shoot at the dragon, which is behind a grate that they cannot shoot through. I am not sure that they can actually win...
Well, I think my score could be a bit generous, but AS maps are rare and this one does have thought and work in it. I think the author can pull of some nice visual themes with some more editor polishing and detailing, but gameplay really needs to be given a boost with some manuvering chances for the attackers and less "run as fast as you can into a wall of enemy fire and hope to live." Beta testing might have caught some of the problems, I'm not sure if this map was tested or not. That's alright, keep going man, I think you will start cranking out some real winners soon.
Edit: No more maps? Oh no, I was thinking you would have something pretty good going by next time! If you do find the time, I would sure like to see some more of your arenas, I wasn't trying to be discouraging at all!

1) I downloaded my file from a link shortly after it was released from the atari forums, it had a readme in it, perhaps nalicity has not updated.
2) If you can't do the first objective I don't think you should be reviewing maps until you've played the game for atleast another year or so.
3) An objective where you hit a switch to activate it is ridiculously easy, aslong as you know what a wall dodge is.
4) Most destroyable objectives are killed by AS players by linking up online, it rips apart anything.
5) The invisible platform does however seem to be a joke, I looked in the editor and it seems to be a mover triggered by a scripted trigger which isn't functioning.
EvilSwanky no offence but I'd be willing to bet that when you wrote that comment you hadn't played the map.
This could've had a lot of potential but from your readme comments as said it does seem rushed towards the end. Hope you make something of UT2007.

With beta testing and those inivisible platforms fixed and a little more deatil added, it could've been something really good. I hope someone makes a remake to improve it and fix the platforms, that would be great. Have fun at Uni, where you going?
| Helper 09-08-2005 05:15 PM MDT | Rating: 4.5 | | I played this, yes, the atmosphere is just odd, and the skybox is poor. I'd also agree that the objectives are not well thought out especially for online play. the standing still thing is rediculous.
To the author: whining about how you're not going to make a map again because you had some bsp errors is pathetic. everyone makes mistakes you can fix them not cry about them.
| SLT^Frase 09-09-2005 04:03 AM MDT | | Ok I do actually take it back lol, the map plays like shit.
But... 'Helper' can you actually read please before insulting me. I said I wouldn't be making maps again as soon as the map was released lol, I have no option I have more important things to do in life. Also it's not a BSP error lol what the hell is the matter with you.
Thanks Jebidiah though, you were pretty much correct in most aspects.

No offence but the guy has a point Helper, your mistake was pathetic. I suggest you learn to read first and act later.
