| John DiFool 08-05-2005 09:47 PM MDT | Rating: 8.5 | | Amazed that nobody has commented on this one yet. For me at least it is probably the best map I've DLed this year. Yes classic two forts setup, but with some very creative twists (and a borrowed bridge-the underground route-from the Fellowship of the Ring movie), a cool way to get the shieldbelt, good fx...what are you waiting for?
Edit: Apparently made in 2002 (I thought Larathiel had been retired for awhile), just now available here, still a goodie...
| Chrysaor 08-06-2005 12:15 PM MDT | Rating: 7 | | I remember this map. It was overhyped and Angel made the neatest architecture.
| Michael 'Larathiel' Darnell 08-06-2005 07:07 PM MDT | | It's been a long time since I've played UT99, but evenings have been slow at work for myself and a new coworker so I figured what-the-heck...
Sooo, I came here to NC to download all the cool old maps that I used to love and I came across the comments some people had made about Face League Edition v200 a ways back. Negative comments mostly from players who obviously were never aware of the myriad of bugs in the original. I figured that I'd check what other had said about some of my other maps and it warmed my heart to see what others had said about Rime Isle.
Naturally, since Vandora was the best and last map I'd done for UT99 (before becoming disenfranchised with an ungrateful and immature "pro" community) I figured I'd check on that too.
You can imagine my surprise when I found that Wrath of Vandora was nowhere to be seen on the most popular UT map site all these years later. Anyway, an overly long explanation of why the map was made several years ago and was only just now submitted to NC.
EDIT...
John: BTW, this map was finished long before Peter Jackson's movies. I named the lower route after the scene from Tolkien's books. Good observation none-the-less. Thanks for the kind comments. :-)
Chrysaor: Most of the original to-do (at least in the ProUnreal community) was because the map has lots of gameplay tricks and strategic/tactical possibilities. On the downside, that same community wanted 80+ frames per second in every last map and CTF-Vandora was a bit too detailed for computers that were already well past their prime. I was going to do a remake for UT200x but since it basically bombed, I decided to only do contract mapping until such time as another game really grabbed me the way UT99 did.
I'm glad to know that people also still think highly of Angel Mapper. She and I shared a lot of ideas and were good friends back in the day. As focused as I was on the strategic aspect of mapping, she was the flip-side with innovative gameplay ideas. It's nice to see that she's done well.
| Nahand 08-07-2005 11:32 AM MDT | | ... what blew this map for me was the somewhat limited BOT path/behaviour. Playing offline ended up not being that great. Visually, the map is great though...
| Duke_It 08-08-2005 07:04 AM MDT | Rating: 8.5 | | Stunning. A must have for any CTF collection. Shame the bots don't tend to use the lower paths much but they still play well enough.
| Evil Snack 08-08-2005 11:25 AM MDT | Rating: 8.5 | | I LOVE your maps. They're all so unique and cool looking. I think all of your maps are awesome. In my oppinion, you are one of the best mappers out there. I was kind of sad when I found out how recent your latest map was. But it's great to see you. Anyways, thanks for all the fun game time you've given me.
