REVIEWER: Gnome and Sapper DATE: Friday, July 22nd, 2005 TODAY'S MAP WAS PICKED BY: GNOME
DM-Tomb of Horus by Adamo
AWE: 1.0 BUILD: 1.5 CAST: 0.5
SAPPER: I knew it. I just knew you were going to pick an even worse map than the last one you picked. I think you're just doing this to spite me. GNOME: No. The screen shots that Adamo took on this one were deceptively enticing. SAPPER: New rule, from now one, you pick two maps for review and then I'll pick which one of those two we actually do. GNOME: I'll think about it.
THE AWE FACTOR GNOME: So what do you think Sapper? SAPPER: Yeah, I think someone owes me the last 60 minutes of my life back. Although theme is fluent and consistent throughout this map, I fail to understand why it is as big as it is. We have three very large rooms, we've got corridors and hallways cutting it to pieces. We've even got a rather bright and disgusting looking outside area if you decide to break through the broken walls and take a look. And if you do go outside, don't look up or you'll realize that you're living inside a poorly wallpapered prison for which their is no escape. GNOME: The bonus about this map is that unlike maps such as DM-abandonedv1 and to a lesser extent CTF-Erebus, it is somewhat saved in appearance by expansive use of decor. If every hyroglyphic used was different and if the whole place was less blocky, and if some of the visual effects, brushes and backgrounds were improved, I would say this map has potnential. But right now, it's too big for it's own good.
THE BUILD GNOME: Although the readme file claimed there was one BSP hole and that he was unable to fix it, it must have been pretty minor because I couldn't find it. No movers, no triggers, no HOMs. Good use of different sound effect throughout. Made to appear such as a tomb, but a considerable amount more work is needed. SAPPER: Personally, those stupid waterfalls were a real turnoff. Going outside was the biggest mistake I could have made. And seriously, like so many other maps that fail in this tiny little detail...if you are standing over a burning fire whether it is a light source or not, don't you think I would hurt and should cause some damage?
THE CAST SAPPER: This is definately not a map you want to play as a botmatch. Primary battlezones aren't located in any of the three giant rooms. Rather, you'll find most of the bots fighting at the ends of bot paths where bots just stop and turn into campers. Sometimes bots with just run back and forth or around in circles or, as you can see in the very last screen shot, point their translocators straight up and play elevator. Also, bots only seem to like certain pickups. They'll pick up one health vial but completely ignore another sitting a couple of feet away. GNOME: Too big. More than enough room for twelve to sixteen players, but all these bots where hit over the head by the stupid stick before they got into the game. So no matter how many players you have, gameplay is seriously degraded.
OVERALL SAPPER: I'm going to package this map up and mail it Cairo so that everyone there can laugh at it. GNOME: Sorry Adamo. I know it seems like we're picking on you. You've got great ideas, but a little more practice and patience and effort before you release your maps could mean all the difference in the world. SAPPER: How much do you suppose the postage would be to send a temple overseas?
SCREEN CAPTIONS: 1) The throne room for Horus' casket. 2) A bot lies in wait but will end up getting shot in the back. 3) One of many such rooms with no apparent purpose. 4) I took this shot just to prove that by taking a single picture, you can make any map look good, even if it's not. 5) The ground-level temple entrance room isn't quite as specatular or as weathered and worn as one would expect. 6) Lower-level pool room. I think even the ancient Egyptians would have avoided taking in swim here. 7) The false altar of the God of the underworld. This statue actually belongs to Shinola, God of Waste Management. 8) And here we have a bot who for some reason like to teleport himself eighteen feet above the ground and then fall down...over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over... |

| Sicko Teddy 07-20-2005 12:32 AM MDT | Rating: 3 | | .. because he keep updating it with every bit added to it each time. About the map, Ill say it's too cubic. mostly 90 degrees stuff. that's too old. take a chance with some wierd geometry. Egypt is fun but whoah! this theme is overbeaten by many mappers! Do ancient china! :)
| IndySkyz 07-21-2005 10:31 AM MDT | Rating: 6 | | Not a bad map at all, alittle plain looking in spots, but not a major problem there, the biggest problems I see with this map are #1 only 4 start points, even if playing the map as a 1v1 or 2v2 you should still have more than 4 spawn points as it will be to ez for a lamer to find and camp them, plus the map is big enough to handle 8, 12, and maybe even 16 people if you like spamfest, so atleast 12 more player starts would be nice, #2 some of the weapons and power ups seem to be clustered to close together, making it far to ez to power up. Overall not to bad if more spawn points were added.
| kais 07-22-2005 04:39 AM MDT | Rating: 5 | | Although I don't agree with the 3 the reviewers gave this map I don't think this map is good. First of all the map had some nice detail but overall the shapes are way to square. Second the gameplay is just lame.
