CTF-I_B_Bangin by Scuzzbuster
Well, I saw this map had asked for a review, and the filename sounded interesting, at the very least I thought I was going to get some “uber” clanmap with some “decent” music. I didn’t get my decent music.
Really I should have probably realised what this map was going to be like, by the number of underscores in the filename (generally, most maps that I have seen with more than 1 _ in the mapname, have generally sucked – there are exceptions, don’t worry)
First Impressions
Well, I opened it up, first thing I noticed, there was no music at all. Yay, time to listen to that amazing Menu music again. The default gametype had been applied properly, which is a nice change in a CTF map, as normally most load up in DM mode (I launch a lot of games by double clicking the mapfile).
Well, what can I say, the author appears to have become addicted to decorations, they are everywhere! As this isn’t a small map, they stick out. A few decorations correctly positioned, can really help a map, they don’t do that here. There doesn’t even to appear to have been any thought about them either, as the entire map is textured with metals, a futuristic type theme, and then there are 2 Shields on the wall. The bronze U decoration was used quite well as a flagbase, but it’s still not quite good enough. The way the redeemer was attached to a hanging wire was an interesting idea too, if only the author hadn’t used the wriggling wire. Although I have complained about the overuse of decoration, if it all was removed, the map would probably be even worse. Quite a few textures are misaligned, and they look frankly, awful. In the secret room, one custom texture with a picture of someone and some message about some clans has been slapped all over a cylinder, walls, floor and ceiling. Architectural theme doesn’t seem to exist. Lighting is bland and repetitive, although in some areas it is almost blindingly bright. The map does have a level screenshot though.
The map is built up out of basic cubes and cylinders, in different sizes and some have been rotated at crazy angles. Most of the brushes fit together fine, not many ugly lumps or steps where the brushes haven’t been positioned properly. There are some though, around about when you get to the ‘secret’. The whole map is one big zone. No zoning. As I mentioned earlier, there is no music in this map, there are no sounds either, perhaps the author didn’t have his speakers working ;). No movers, but then again there are no BSP’s or HOM’s either (the map looks bad enough without them anyway).
There appears to be 2 routes from the bases, up and down, not much seems to distinguish one route from the other, except the decorations, and I found myself getting confused sometimes as to whether I was up or down. There has obviously been a lot of thought that has gone into the planning of the routes as the map flows pretty well, but unfortunately the map doesn’t seem to be able to pull it off, and the gameplay quickly becomes very boring, not something you would really want to play again. There are 5 playerstarts per team, so obviously the map was made for around the regions of 4v4, I think (if you would want to play it) that a 2v2 on here would be optimal, as anymore would just turn into a huge fragfest. Framerate is generally pretty good. The AI somewhat redeems this map, as it is pretty good, bots will come and take your flag, cap it, and then run back for more. Although in the editor, it doesn’t seem much thought has gone into placing the pathnodes. The bots will not use the ‘secret’. To use the secret you will either need jumpboots (none appear in this map) or the translocator. There is at least one of each weapon in the map. Placement of the weapons, sucks. At your spawnpoint, you are most likely to be able to find any ammo type you want, but no guns.
Overall
In the end, this map is ugly, and won’t leave you wanting more, but it does have potential, with a bit of work on his texturing and brushwork, the author could make some good maps, as they already have a good mind for designing a nice flow, and the botpathing seems to work good on this map (not brilliant, but good). It would also be nice, if next time the author left out the decorations.

and GTD-Carthage, with that kindof attitude, no I would not ;)
