Level Size: Medium
Recommended Player Load: 10 Players
Quite a while back, just about a year, I read a review on Evil Atje's CTF-Atje'sTowers. The map was given 3/10 because it was dark. At the time, I didn't understand why, because i just drew my window blind, and it made one hell of a level. IMHO, the darkness was good for the atmosphere of the level. Anyway, CTF-Iridium][ has to be one of the darkest levels I've ever played. This level seriously takes the biscuit.
The darkness of this level goes way beyond helping the atmosphere. Look at the screenshots. I had to put the gamma up 50% on each screenshot. The central section of this level is a huge hollowed out cave, with a walkway from one side to the other. As always, falling is fatal. The area is pitch black, and you only have the lens flares at either end to guide you. On top of that, there are crates in the way, and each team has a sniping platform. As well as this way to reach the other base, there is a portal route on offer too. Only problem is that when you step through, you end up behind the portal on the other side. The architecture is good, well from what I saw in the bases. It may be a little basic, but it's adequate none the less. There are a couple of ambient sounds in there too, which fit well.
The bot AI works well. In the dark areas, this gives them a major advantage over human players, as they don't seem to be affected by the darkness as much as us mere mortals. All of the defence points are facing left, meaning that when the bots defend, they turn their backs to the oncoming attackers. Item placement is good though. The gameplay in this level has been destroyed by a handful of blatant mistakes. If the author corrects them, and released another version, then it would boost the score I've given. The darkness, especially in the central spoils the level in a big way. Bad AI and the portal problem make matters even worse. It's a shame really, because the other aspects of the level aren't bad.
In conclusion, this level really needs more work. The lighting especially. Apart from the lighting, there are a couple of other serious errors, which maybe could have been fixed. I can't say I recommend this level though. Lets have another version ( ]I[ ) with the three errors fixed, and perhaps a more elaborate layout.
CTF Iridium][ is;
Dark
Very Dark
Plagued by three blatant errors.
CTF Iridium][ isn't;
Very good in terms of AI.
Going to be popular.
Good.
Teaching points for author:
Too dark!!
Test the AI more thoroughly

| Denis Lavoie | Rating: 6.5 | | Same as the others! Absolutly not too dark. Most of users maps are all the same. My gamma correction is always up like it should and I build my map accordingly to thoses settings. For the map itself, its nice. Not many paths, not many stats involved, too much easy to defend... but nice... An average map that is NOT DARK! MATT, you should edit your review because it will tend people not to download it just because your computer is badly configured... :P
| Ammo | Rating: 3.5 | | the whole map is not dark, but that tunnel that joins the bases is really dark, with the crates. but the map isn't good anyway. just a bunch of curved and square halls, with a room here and there. big deal.
