ReviewerTHE ]V[ATTerminatorOverall Score: 8.5/10
DateNC2 11-17-2000

Level Size: Medium

Recommended Player Load: 10 Players

This is a great symmetrical level. It's a bit like CTF-Dreary, but incorporates a more industrialised theme. The tight corridors make for some frantic gameplay.

The level sees the two bases joined together by two chambers. Each of these chambers is identical in layout and appearance. They're reminiscent of CTF-Dreary - the rooms corridors with the twin-walkways. Each base has the flag on the second floor, with two ramps leading down. Architecturally, this map has everything going for it. Each and every part of the map is very thoroughly detailed and looks great. The lighting is also very good. The lights are at a kind of half-darkness, which fits the level really well. Having said that though, I think there's some room for some more variation with the lights as they (except the lava lights) are all set more or less the same. Sound effects have been used to good effect to add a further degree of realism. The sounds of lights humming and steam in vents provide a good backdrop to gameplay. The best part of the physical side of the level is the texturing. Every texture on the level has been placed with a good level of precision and care. And these aren't any old textures thrown in at random. They fit the level really well, and I can't find anything against them.

The bots play very well. There are a couple of very good defence points set up in the bases, but there's a couple of other tactically good positions that have been missed out in this sense. The bots use both the upper and lower routes for attacking purposes, adding a degree of unpredictability to gameplay. I did see some of the bots stuck running on the spot, when they enter the corridors. Items and weapons have been spread about the level well. Each base has a damage amplifier up in the rafters. There's a couple of other powerups hidden equally well. Probably the best part of this level is the gameplay. Each route between the bases has it's own advantages and disadvantages. The longer route is safer, but the lower shorter route is, well, umm, shorter! The tight corridors make defending easy, and makes life hell for anyone escaping with the flag. The Z-Axis elements to a lot of the rooms go a long way to making the game more interesting. The only problem with the gameplay that I found was that the most of the playerstarts are in roughly the same area. If you stand between the two ramps in the enemy base, and have your back towards the entrance, providing you have a good weapon, you'll make loads of very easy kills. This is only a problem with the AI though, as there is another way out for them, rather than charging a player, armed to the teeth.

In conclusion, this is a great level. Given its size and layout, I'd have to say that this level is better for LAN games, rather than net games. Anyone who liked CTF-Dreary (which came with the original game), is going to instantly recognise the qualities of this, which making it an outstanding level - definite epic-quality.

CTF Insane is;

  • A great level.

  • Best for LAN or botplay.

  • Nothing new, in terms of theme.

    CTF Insane isn't;

  • For large scale games.

  • Going to deleted from anyone's UT map collection.

  • Without the odd hiccup with the AI

    Teaching points for author:

  • Test the AI more thoroughly. This is a bloody good level, but that problem could have been easily fixed, had it been seen.

    Since Matterminator obviously doesn't have a grasp on how to rate maps properly (which is sad considering how long he has been reviewing), let me make it easy for him. Maps should only get a rating of 8 or higher if they are nearing Epic quality, or really pro standards. 8 is really good, as is 8.5. 9 and above is truly elite (or l33t). This map is above average (5 is average), but it isn't near Epic quality (280 polys in the main room). Therefore, 6 or 6.5 is about right. 8.5 is waaay to high. Still, it's a decent map and his best yet.

    Nobody is : A fewl with all the skill of a cricus clown Nobody is not : a good name, among other things. I'd like to see either of u make a map this good. Maybe terminator rated it a bit high but its very fun. =)

    Might be a good idea to run your reviews by Kain or Qualthwar first, a 2nd opinion is always good. ''I'd like to see either of u make a map this good'' This is NOT a good argument.

    aN 8.5.....is this a joke? The map is so boring......

    The layout is okay, but there are some misalignments, and there are way too many of those lights on the ground. The lighting also doesn't seem to flow from its sources very well, and the lights don't look on for the most part. Sorry, but there is no way this should be an 8.5, especially with glaring misalignments.

    Smells ripoff all the way, not as much as ctf-province though. Vatterminator: join a clan or something, reviewing doesn't seem to be your thing.

    Thanks. Ever have played CTF-Tutorial?

    Too many things wrong with the map to be worth 8.5. Bots needs tweaking (find that blue is better at getting the flag and getting it home, etc.), item placement was horrid, and texture misalignments were noticible all over the map. It'll get a 6 in my books.

    so cold I feel... This map wasn't really anything special, certainly not 8.5 status. Diagnosis=Reviewer got carried away.

    Give that man a break. =) Textures, Lighting and architecture are flawless. Well done! The layout is kinda like Dreary or Cybrosis. Not everybody's favorite, but if these maps have made it into the official maps, then this map deserves some good rating too.
