DM-MindKiller (UT99)

New Music new textures

An industrial plant that’s a bit hard on the eyes, but provides good gameplay. Satisfaction for the DM fans.

AWE: 2.0

The lighting here is good overall. The colors aren’t oversaturated and the distribution is good although it is too dark overall. I had to adjust the brightness setting in order to play and see my opponents. The coronas are vastly overdone in this one. Their size gives the illusion of a humid, foggy arena but there is no fog to match. If the coronas had been reduced to a reasonable level, this would have been much more attractive to play.
The texture work is quite varied and well done. A mix of wood, stone, and metal, only one textures really seemd out of place. The textures were well-aligned and everything was trimmed off nicely. Perhaps alittle too varied in terms of actual textures choices but that could just be me. Finally, there were some custom textures. The pickups base texture looked a little out of place but nice however, the sun in the skybox did not work well. Alpha texture practice is definitely needed.
The architecture is quite nice here. Ramps and passageways flow into each other with slants here, arched/slanted doorways and passages, nothing really screams out ‘boxy’ here.
In general, good textureing, well-applied but ultimately bad lighting, and good architecture. A fairly decent looking piece of work in general.

BUILD: 2.5

The author has proven that he knows how to use the editor. The BSP is all solidly constructed and pulled together. The application of sound leaves a bit to be desired, however. We have the de rigeur water noises next to the flowing waste, and the machine sounds next to the machines, but what about the fans? And considering the one outside area is windowed off, I don’t really see a reson why we should hear wind at that location.
Really good construction but a little more attention to sound work is needed.

CAST: 2.0

The gameplay here is really quite good. Although there are only two main floors, there’s plenty of z-axis to go around. Up and down and all over will you be harassed by the bots. They travel the map extensively and the 3 to 6 player count is just right. Flow was pretty good and weapon layout was alright as well. You’ll never find yourself starved for a weapon unless you can’t see them in the dark.

In general a fine addition to the author’s portfolio. I’m guessing the mindkiller title is really a reference to an eyekiller what with the juxtaposition of the darkness and the overbearing coronas. But if you’re willing to adjust your brightness setting, theis is a DM map you’ll really appreciate the gameplay in.

This is a must have map for any serious DM player, first off the music rocks, layout works great for DM, was very playable as far as fps go, and just the right amount of detail, anymore would be too much IMO. I only found a couple flaws or problem areas but they are so minor it aint worth even pointing out really. Overall you dont get much better than this in a UT map, Great work dude.

EDIT: I'll checkout all the ones on the Hotlist you suggest, but it seems the hotlist maps really dont do it for me either, I guess its because they seem to focus too much on looks, I have tried LastCrusader][ and in my opinion it sucks, but thats just my opinion.

You nedd to check the NC hotlist dude, not that this is bad, it's even pretty good.

For the peeps with nowadays rigs;
DM-Lastcrusader][
DM-Deck_40
CTF-DeNova
CTF-Wether
DM-Tregeagly

These are some of my fav's, but there are more of them.

I believe RedFist doesn't like even one of them.

...Excellent work from a very seasoned level designer.
I have really enjoyed alot of your past work over the years Markus; I can't speak for everybody but I think most UT players would concur - that it goes without saying - how much we appreciate you guys/gals who have shared your time and Imagination/Inspirations over the years with us...Just wanted you to know!!!...SpitFire.

Up until today, I've always placed the UNLD mappack (Smeerkat and Co.) in a very special category, due to their quality, atmosphere and playability.... and then here in 2005 along comes this rare gem.

You know, I've heard the term "Epic quality" thrown around before, sometimes accurately, sometimes questionably. This map truly deserves that distinction. If you're reading this and haven't downloaded MarkusW's latest, please do so right now!
Solid 9.5 Ownage......

MarkusW, I'm still waiting for your Oktoberfest map (oh, and please include the buxom beer maids..:)

Playability/connectivity is great but the visuals? Trims were set very rarely and the lighting is at some places too dark and most of the time very gaudy...
Because of the nice gameplay: 7
(it was difficult for me to make the decision between 6.5 and 7)
