DM-CloudConnected (UT)
Tight little DM map floating on clouds. Almost like someone placed and oil rig in the sky, it seemingly serves no purpose but gameplay does have a purpose here.
AWE: 1.5
The author used UT2003 textures to populate portions of the map and they work well overall. Everything’s pretty well aligned and trimmed appropriately, however the palette used was extremely similar. Your choice, for the most part, is metal, or rusted metal. And you see a lot of it. There is one disappointing texture and that is on a yin/yang symbol which is quite pixellated and looks out of place. The skybox is textured and built well with my only complaint being that one can see where the clouds on top meet the clouds below. But you do have to look for it to see it. The lighting was very colorful and very dark. The lighting consisted of the most red and blue I’ve seen outside of a CTF map. A little too oversaturated for my taste, they did create nice ‘pools’ of light but there didn’t seem to be any light between the pools. Also, the red and blue seemed placed at random – I’m just not sure there was a method to their placement. The architecture was simple yet effective. Nothing terribly complicated or spectacular but it flowed together well. Also, the author used custom music – a track from the recent hit ‘7 bullets’. It suited the map well. Overall the map is not the most appealing place to look at. Oversaturated lighting and a drab texture palette give it a monotonous feel. The architecture makes up for it a bit but not enough.
BUILD: 2.0
The map is certainly built competently. The BSP work is solid and the decorations are assimilated nicely. The jumppads work fine but use the Xloc sound which, if you’ve played a lot of CTF, is a little disconcerting. I kept expecting a guy with a flag to be standing next to me when I landed. The mover to the sniping platform works well and has a nicely satisfying docking sound that can be heard quite a ways away. I did think its dock time was really too quick and it should have stuck around longer. Also, getting on and off the sniping platform was a little hairy with such a narrow opening between the supports to travel though. The map sounds were alright. There was ambient sound all through the map and a few localization sounds but not enough to really flesh out the atmosphere. Overall a well-built map but the mover could have used some tweaking – including a small volume radius – and the sounds could have used a little more localization.
CAST: 2.5
The gameplay here is good healty fun. Enough z-axis to keep you busy, the bots will do the same. The weapon layout is well conceived considering the size of the map. The shield belt is centrally located and not really challenging in terms of layout or difficult to get to. But because of the size of the map, it becomes a race of who can realize it’s there first. The sniper platform seems a tad unnecessary. I don’t think that gameplay would suffer by its removal. Especially since once there, one can’t see a whole lot of the map to snipe. In general the gameplay’s quite nice but it’s nothing new or special. The bots will keep you on your toes and the sniper area doesn’t really have a place here.
A tight little DM that will satisfy your lust for a new DM map. It’s a bit bland and the lightings oddly implemented. But the gameplay holds up fine and some of you may find use for the sniper platform. Download it for the gameplay but not the visuals.

Creepy map that's for sure. The clouds in the background envelopes the whole horizon... that's creepy. And, the feeling Islamic roofs of some of the support stands add to the creepiness.

| EvilSwanky 01-25-2005 03:34 PM MST | Rating: 6.5 | | Pro - Okey architecture / Skybox - Lighting - A lot of Z-Axis - Music
Contra - Item placement (too much health... / shieldbelt is too powerful) - Nasty bsp wholes near shock - symmetry / too open in spots - jumppads just don't look good
=> a map slightly above average
You can't download from any of the links? :/ I know that the second one works (got it from there...)

| scirmast 01-07-2006 10:19 PM MST | Rating: 7 | | I so love these floating complexes! :) Dunno why I have a fixation for them, but this map vertainly is fun to play. However, I can only suggest instagib or weapons stay duel, since the map is way too small for a "regular" duelling.
The sniping platform is kinda out of place. But other than that I can't think of anything seriously wrong.
