Map DescriptionThis is a fairly standard industrial-themed map, my debut as a mapper. Whilst not the most visually appealing map I think it flows quite well. Anyway, make up your own minds! :P

Another industrial map from a newbie mapper. Industrial theme, but it looks more like Iron Dust than Rankin. Yeah this one is closer to a mine than to a factory and I like that but this one isn’t as developed as Iron Dust.

Expect to see stone and metal everywhere. Stone walls, stone floors metals used on trims and other decorations etc. The textures are well used throughout the map and are well aligned too so no complains here. The architecture is a bit boxy and I think the whole map could have been more detailed but hey it’s a first map after all. Maybe the best thing of this map is the lighting. Its very well done for a new mapper. The colours used all over the map blend well together and they ft the textures, however some of them could use sharper radius and more/less saturation. Oh and there is one spot near the elevator in the minigun room that was almost greening. There are also some nice details like the blood splatters and the rain but I found a spot where it should be raining too but it wasn’t ?_?

Maybe what turned me off was the combination of layout + gameplay. I’ll explain it later but in short I can say that this map feel like an arena one (Morbias or even Liandri) The layout isn’t bad at all but neither it’s specially good. The main problem is that all the corridors are connected to the same main arena and, besides connectivity wasn’t that great. A bug I Saw was a bsp error on top of the minigun room you can jump through the wall and get down to the ASMD. Other things I saw were the small puddles near the flak cannon. I’m sure they didn’t sound every time a player walked over them. Not a big problem though but there it is. The sound setup was there too and if turn the music off you won’t get bored as you can always hear the rain, the lava, some humming etc.

As I’ve already said the combination of layout + gameplay is what prevents this map to have a higher score. The layout is almost like an arena map and that is reflected on the gameplay. Bots are always on the rocket launcher room and I rarely see them somewhere else unless they spawn there. I guess its due, in part, to the layout and also to the item placement. In the same room there are both rocket launcher and a big shield/damage amp. Maybe balancing the weapon locations and scaling that room down a bit could help there. I couldn’t play this one against humans but it should play better. The fps were good all over the place except again on the main arena. Maybe cos most of the action takes place there and because its very big. I had a little fps drop while looking from certain angles but was almost unnoticeable.

To the author: don’t worry about the score, it’s your first map and you did a good job with this map. Also remember to convert all the decoration to meshes to improve the performance of your next maps.

I for one have tried it, and I must say, for a first map it was executed very well and deserves and above average rating from me.

While some of the lighting contrast could have been a little lower, some more detail could have been added, it was well thought out. I would recomend beta testing at the atari community for your next map.
You did do a lot of things right, like scripted sounds, lava volumes, and some other things I'm leaving out... and you have potential to become a great mapper in the near future.

Edit: My fault.... I see that you did beta test this at the atari forums, I just never saw it. :(

The only thing I took from other maps, or rather was inspired by from other maps :P, was the rain stuff from DM-Rankin. The splash noises wouldn't work properly for me either so I did a straight copy of those in the end from Rankin. The rest I did myself. Even the Rankin-style puddle emitters! (the circular ones)

Anyway, thanks for the comments, I'm looking forward to the review to see if I get dissuaded from pursuing mapping or not!

i give this map a 7.5
i have reviewed it through all the betas and left good contructive feedback for it. and from beta 1, this map looks alot better. the gameplay is very good and exelent layout. i love the music that he put in this, and i am still listening to it BTW :)
and yet for a first map (which are usualy a big cube with some deemers) this is extreamy good. i love it and you should too :)

= Visuals:
- Visuals are OK, but nothing spectacular. Some rooms look a bit cubical & they would have been better with some more meshes, but both visuals & lighting are really good to be the 1st author's map.
- Framerates are great.
= Layout: The layout is good for 1on1, but I did not like it very much:
- I miss more connectivity, jumpads and the posibility of liftjumping.
- There is some z-axis only in the main room.
- Those lavapits and some meshes are not very friendly with my dodgemania...
= Item placement: It's OK too...
- I miss some more heathpacks25.
- No BioRifle!!! :(
= Sounds:
- Strange but good music.
- There are a few nice sounds through the map...
A great map to be the author's first, keep mapping Nilian.
Edit: I underrated it a bit. I change the score from 5.5 to 6...

Looked okay, but I didnt really like the gameplay in this map :(
