I saw this map a few days ago and I decided to review it because the sshots looked good. After playing some intesive matches against bots and humans, I can say that I was right (but just in part). I'm not sure if this is his/her first map or what, but there are some things that are too obvious and should have been fixed. Keep reading!
If you've played Rankin then this map will look familiar to you. Brown brick walls, some wood here and there and lots of metal pipes everywhere but to be honest the execution of the theme doesn't reach Rankin's level. Still there are some nice details like and outdoor area and some cracks in the walls with some stuff in there. There is also a big pit on the ground blocked with some wooden planks so you cant fall. I like that kind of details. The archy is nothing special, I would rate it as average but there are a couple of spots that look better than the rest of the map. The lighting of the outside area is nice though some more saturation for the sunlight and sharper radius on the lamps would be nice. On the inside I felt the lights could have a bit more of contrast to make differences between bright and dark spots. Some other flaws I found were, some wall textures on the curved stair set and other misaligned textures here and there. Oh and the worst of all, the wooden corridors. They were just... uhm don't know how to say it... out of place. They ain't right.
The build section is the weakest point o the map IMO and that's why I'm not sure if this is his/her first map. There are some details that even n00b mappers wouldn't miss (or maybe they would) but anyway nobody's perfect and you can always learn from your own errors. This is what I found: First off, the skybox. I guess the skybox actor should be dragged up a bit because you can see the walls of the substracted cube if you look from certain angles. Other thing a saw were shadows on the edges of some brushes. Didn't open the map on the editor but i guess that setting the textures to bright corners should fix that. I also noticed some static mesh abuse. There are mainly three different static meshes throughout the map. Some more variation or, why not some custom meshes would have done the job. But not everything is bad here. We have a good sound setup that creates a good atmosphere, And if you play with the music on you'll have the pleasure to listen to one of these hard/rock tracks that will keep you on a good mood to frag.
Finally I arrive to another point that makes me wonder if this is a first map or what because the layout is very good, could need some more work on the wooden hallways but overall the author did a good job with it. There are z-axis opportunities everywhere, conectivity is good too and of course the gameplay is good. It's a pitty that the item placement wasn't as good and totally killed the flow sometimes. Apart from that bots do a good job; they travel the map without problems and use the elevators as they should but I saw one of them usually getting stuck on the ramp near the minigun. Online playing should be smooth due to the good fps of the map, besides you wont get stuck anywhere because of the archy. Sure this one is worth a try. |

Just the use of the same bricktexture everywhere is, well, :/

Second, well, it's not my first map. It's tricky to explain. I mapped for one year witout any feedback. as you can imagine, those maps were total crap. So, in September I got my internet connection and startet publishing my maps. What you can see here is my third map released, but shure the thenth ore more I built.
