DM-1on1-BrokenTrust (UT)
A pretty little one-on-one map with some nice eye-candy and some good gameplay. The setting is reminiscent of Unreal 1 in a temple basement? surrounded by a jungle. Nice lighting, nice sound effects, and a varied layout make one-on-one matches in this arena quite fun.
AWE: 2.0
The lighting in BrokenTrust is well-implemented overall. There isn't much variation, just red and white, but what there is is put to good use. The red lights accenting the waterfall and pool are just a tad more saturated than I like to see. The white lighting thrugh the rest of the level isn't overdone and provides a nice level of illumination throughout without looking ambiant. Some deeper shadow work would have been nice but I can't complain too much. One thing I like to keep in mind when lighting a map is not only the color of the light source, but also what colors the light will be casting on. Since the UEngine lighting is kind of 'real' kind of 'fake', I think adding a blue or green tint to the lighting around the water would have really touched it off a bit more as well as a reddish/brownish hue where the white lights are casting onto the brown sotne and wood. The waterfall and spray was nicely done and creates a nice effect. Its a shame that the engine displays the pickups so oddly when viewed through the spray - they seem to be floating in the spray. But I can't blame this on the author. The textureing was well-trimmed throughout the map and I only noticed only one misalignment on the brown brick walls. However, some of the texture choices I question a bit. There are custom textures here and one of them is the schematic for a rocket ship. This looks quite out of place with the rest of the map being an old, overgrown, stone and wood-based structure. There's something to be said for consistancy of design with the author's choice of textures in the map. Finally, the skybox, when one can see it, looks good except that the clouds are moving way too fast. Overall the author has done a nice job filling in the map with just a few texture questions and some lighting that could have been varied a bit more.
BUILD: 2.0
The build here is nice and solid. The BSP work is well-done with nicely complicated areas. The floor is broken up nicely without getting the player stuck and the ramps and various elevations are sewn together nicely. One problem I experienced was near the ramp that is next to the small alcove with the 100 armour. There was a place where I fell down to the lowest floor level while seemingly on solid ground. I'm not sure if this was a purposefull gap or perhaps a BSP error but I did not experience an HOM and I was able to simply walk out of it. The ambint sounds were nicely implemented but just a little too sparse. The water sound was well chosen with a nice volume and radius. Otherwise there was a slight ambiant wind/air sound through most of the rest the map. i think a few more sounds to layer the environment would have been better. One sound that was very good was the sound chosen for the one lift. The lift itself seems large, thick, and solid and the author picked a very good sound to match it. Overall it's a nicely built level with only one or two things to complain about.
CAST: 2.0
The bots ran around the map well and used the z-axis to their advantage. They would fire down from above and jump down from above on the 2.5 levels the map offers. I'm calling it 2.5 because there's the main floor area, and a defined '2nd floor' but the elevation variations the ramps and landings offer really make it seem like more than 2 floor sometimes. It's an illusion well crafted. Two bot issues exist, however. The first one is that I never saw them use the elevator, nor tread down the short corridor that leads to it either on the first floor nor the second. Secondly, there is a fairly steep ramp near some slanted wooden pillars/beams. The bots would get stuck at the bottom of the ramp as the tried to go up and would wiggle back and forth in place doing the safety dance or something. The weapon placement is good overall. I think the flak is a little bit too much in the open and would have benefited by being moved into the elevator corridor. The armour is nicely placed in an alcove which gives it a nice risk/reward value. Curiously there is no Rocket Launcher present but I would actually applaud this decision because of how tight the map is overall. It's not too tight - there's plenty of room to move around, but just enough. having the rocket launcher in here would have reduced it to a spam map where the only challenge would be to not blow yourself up with it. The gameplay in the map, barring the bot deficiencies, it quite good and definately provides a fun romp through the map. The z-axis possibilities and the partial obscurity offered by the waterfalls and spray both add to the challenge of hunting down your opponent in a one-on-one.
Quite a fun map to play, it doesn't disappoint. Add good gameplay, some decent visuals, a sprinkling of sounds, and a well-considered weapon loadout, stir and let simmer for however long it took the author to make, and you've got a deathmatch map that all but the most fastidious would enjoy. I reccomend the download for all but the most picky. |

| Sergeant Todd 11-23-2004 08:18 AM MST | | Loaded up a botmatch to check it out and....what, no bots!!! What's going on here?
| Jez 11-23-2004 10:59 AM MST | | Hmm.. the map loads, but it won't let you play. Pressing fire to start has no effect. You're stuck in fly-by mode for this one guys :/ Broken needs to be fixed...
| redfist 11-24-2004 04:17 PM MST | | All the bots left to go visit the the lady on the wall there there. Why is it ,that you all are "fixing" this level?,geez if i posted it be getting flamed left and right, geez. it should get a zero,no matter who made it,or some explaination from the author at least !
| quillion 11-26-2004 04:20 PM MST | Rating: 5.5 | | download map, place it on desktop and rebuild it in editor, should work then..
The map itself is quite good. It has a few errors, but i thought it had good gameplay, nice map.
[EDIT] To the author: I would lower your trim work and weapon bases. Players can get caught on them, a little too often. The pathing of the map needs attention, bots get stuck in too many places.

The screenshots look quite nice, however, I shall wait for a fixed version to be uploaded before I acquire it.
| Koveras 11-23-2004 05:21 PM MST | | strange map with a strange mix of textures those leaves on the ceiling defy gravity, what are they resting on?!
| SoH_Ghost3021 11-25-2004 12:03 PM MST | Rating: 7.5 | | lol probaly glass textures that dont have the 'unlit' property. it wont play for some reason, i will check for version 2 every once in a while.
edit: good overall map, had to rebuild in editor before i could play; not to author: before you submit a map, rebuild it ONE LAST TIME. it does a map good!
would be a 7, but having to upload in editor is pain in butt, so lower grade
edit: where IS the author?
editforv2] yay! it works without rebuild now! wooT! better score now..
| ]OfC[Saint 11-24-2004 01:15 AM MST | Rating: 7.5 | | Very nice 1 0n 1 map. Lighting is amazing, archi is also pretty good and game play is solid. Noticed a Bsp or Hom (whatever one) by the pulse rifle and i had to rebuild the map in the editor. Other than that very nice job.
| ZBREAKER 11-24-2004 01:59 PM MST | Rating: 6 | | As quillion said, just rebuild in the editor, save all seems to work...though this really should have been sorted out b4 release. Otherwise a very nice map, well done despite the initial shortcoming..therefore the lower grade
| MarkusW 11-25-2004 01:48 PM MST | | This Comment is not made by me, but from Walm: Sorry for all the problems with the first version. The version you can download now(1.1) is fully playable I think. Have fun with it !
