DM-Ostwerk (UT)
An industrial map that does it right. This map carries theme, construction, and gameplay close to what I consider perfection. There are some flaws but they are minor when held to the gestalt of the map.
AWE: 2.0
We’ve seen the industrial setting a lot over the years in Unreal, UT2003, and UT2004. So by now it’s somewhat tired and really takes a lot to get it just right. The author has accomplished this very well. The textures are aligned well overall with a few exceptions that mostly involve ramps. The textures are also well chosen to contribute to the theme, however, they are too many choices. There’s a tile ramp, a metal ramp, a wood ramp, outside areas that look a little different from the theme inside – especially one with a rock wall of some sort that looks horrible with a repeating texture that’s not aligned at all. The lighting is well done overall. There’s a nice mix of colors with well-thought out placing however some, especially the red, are oversaturated. In other places the lights are not light enough, it’s way too dark. Overall it’s a case of too much contrast – light v. dark, good color strength v. too much. But this is just in specific places not overall. So the lighting is very good overall, it would just need some tweaking in certain places. There’s also a nice blue glow surrounding the pickup locations and there’s a mysterious green shiny healthkit. I dunno what’s up with that. Overall the theme comes through strong and proud. If the texture choices had been made better and the lighting colors toned down a little and the darker areas lightened some, this would have been perfect.
BUILD: 2.5
The many brushes put together to create this were assembled very well. I think some of the ramps could have been replaced with lifts but there’s nothing to complain about with their construction. Everything seems to fit together very well. My one complaint is that I did not hear any ambient sounds. This really would have completed the theme and added to the construction. I didn’t get stuck on anything and was able to navigate quite well.
CAST: 3.0
The bots put up a very good fight on this map. They were all over the place and never gave one location more attention than any other. They used the map intelligently and were worthy opponents. Some of the ramps could have been wider, especially their lower stage but it didn’t really hurt gameplay very much. The darkness, particularly in the water area was a downside but this was very localized and the other dark areas were just light enough to see adequately. The FPS was good throughout the map despite a few dips. Item placement was very good with almost everything spaced out well. There were a few times when I was learning the map that I spawned and had to work to find a weapon, but it quickly became easy. The health vials were placed somewhat curiously around the map but when I needed them, they were there. Overall, there a few minor complaints with lighting and placement but they’re made up for the excellent bot play.
A well-themed industrial map with the gameplay you’ve been looking for (if you’re still playing UT). There are few minor problems in terms of texturing, lighting, and narrow ramps, but the gameplay really shines in this one. Anyone who still plays UT Deathmatch should have this one on their hardrive.

Great job !!

There should at least be some sound in that corridor where the water is flowing out of the pipes. And last but not least is the music, organic i think, the megaman sounding music, i usually hear in newbie maps, i think an atmospheric industrial sounding track would be more suitable. Other than that, top notch lighting and arch, and it's low poly, unlike Ostheim, which was also a cool map. Oh yeah, the mist rising from the weapon platforms is cool. It seems like all the maps that use the checkerboard floor texture from the ORM mappack are worth downloading. (haha if that doesn't sound dorky...)

How about a DM-Ostfest? Locate it in 'Das Grosse Zelt' in Munich, during Oktoberfest, with buxom strudel girls smiling and serving, with volatile beer bottles and mugs.......there I go dreaming again.....think I'll go back to sleep now....chow

| Hortons Who 12-23-2004 09:31 PM MST | Rating: 6.5 | | Layout nice enough but the total lack of sound is a big minus. Lighting needs work as mentioned in the review. What's with the different yet not thematic textures under the weapons' spawns?
Decent layout. Some nice work there.

A more complex layout should be more complex and more towards Z-axis action. I gave this map a 7, and with a more interresting layout it would have gotten at least 8.
It still isn't a bad map by no means!
