BR-BigGuns by Revenga
Yes I know that it says “DON'T DOWNLOAD OR REVIEW YET! NEW VERSION COMING UP!” in the map description, but its been a while, and due to the number or requests it's had, I’m doing the review now, besides, a review will help the author improve it.
AWE –
Well the map is certainly original, if nothing else! Its an interesting idea, the map is made from static meshes of the weapons of UT2004, but much bigger of course.
There’s not really much to be said in this section of the review.
The skybox used one of the standard set of panorama’s from SkyRenders, it’s all aligned correctly.
Lighting is…well there’s not much to light, no special effects that I could see with the lighting.
The emitters where a nice idea, blowing clouds of fog through the arena.
The idea of the map may at first seem cool…but after a while it just ends up with you thinking “Why the hell are there a load of guns floating in mid-air” Map may have worked better if the guns had been on a floor surrounded by slime or something.
BUILD –
Once again, there’s not much for this section either, being that the map is a box filled with static meshes.
No movers or triggers.
There was a wind sound used, obviously to give the feeling that you where high up, the sound does get a bit repetitive if you have Sound turned up loud.
CAST –
Gameplay was confusing, it took me a while to figure out where the ball was, and then where I had to go to get to it. The ball is in the middle, suspended on, a ball static mesh. The map uses jumppads to get you around, which are never the best gameplay improvers, as it’s easy to not make the jump, or get knocked down, midway.
Also, the weapons, do not tessellate, this of course leads to some gaps, in the floating construction, these gaps are not always obvious, and either lead to you falling down a lot, or constantly having to watch where you are going.
The map is actually quite big, and normally, if the other team gets the ball, and heads back to their base, unless you have a few guys in their base, or you’re a damned good shot with the ol’ lightning gun, you’re screwed, due to the distance you have to cross to catch up with them, and the lack of available routes back to the base. The bots are a bit hesitant, but will try to do their job, a lot of the time I found that they could get to the ball easy enough, but then fumbled it on their way back (fell off I guess). They do like to snipe though.
For a map this size, I found that the weapon placement was too spread out.
It’s a nice idea, but in my opinion, it fails. With some gameplay related improvement, the map could be pretty cool I guess.
Oh – and just to point out, my knowledge of BR is limited to offline play only, I am not a BR player normally, so sorry if I have made any mistakes in the review due to lack of BR knowledge.
Note about scoring – Due to the general lack of stuff that was available for review in the Build and Awe sections, they have received suitably low scores – if it’s not there…then I can’t score it ;)

| horned demon 10-20-2004 12:54 PM MDT | Rating: 6 | | kinda funky. but not all that bad
| Sicko Teddy 10-20-2004 07:37 PM MDT | Rating: 7 | | WTF!!!! LOL!! deam you! are you on crack!?!?? That's a crazy (cool) idea to make a city made out of gunz and confuze the players if there is a real gun or fake! LOL crack will kill you!
| slaskan 10-22-2004 11:53 AM MDT | | man cool idea wish i could have thaught of it :P
| CursedSoul1 10-22-2004 12:34 PM MDT | | crappiest idea ive seen since only using box bsp in 2k4.
On one had the idea has potential, on the other hand, this is just...
Lighting is very simple, layout isnt made by you, all you did was put those weapons in the order you wanted them to be. so.. maybe yea layout is made by you, but its nothing very sepcial.
i hope you can make real maps as well, becouse this one isnt worth jack. http://nalicity.beyondunreal.com/view_content.php
| Shao 10-22-2004 07:12 PM MDT | Rating: 7 | | is pretty nice idea...but when i am playing offline , my bots fell almost everytime :P
| T0mbr41d3r 01-27-2005 12:35 PM MST | Rating: 3.5 | | Nice idea, but it looks a bit messy and mostly one way to get to the opposite base.
| hunter 07-03-2005 04:12 PM MDT | Rating: 3 | | spoof map basically
gameplay nothing special, aesthetics definitely nothing special
| goldfenix 07-08-2005 08:50 PM MDT | Rating: 3 | | this map is very interesting, because of the huge huge mega supersized up gun static meshes. It's unusual I admit, but so is most levels we make.
| redfist 07-09-2005 04:33 PM MDT | | If I made this people would be posting zeros. It is a funky map,you got to admit, but it is also a creative idea wich is good.
| Ice-Dancer 07-10-2005 06:14 AM MDT | | Revenga, it would have been better if you had uploaded the map as BR-BigGuns2, as we now have a map that has changed a lot, but the reviews and comments do not match
| Revenga 07-13-2005 05:08 AM MDT | | Message to everyone that wants to download BR-BigGuns: PLEASE go to BR-BigGun2 for the latest version (eventhough it is version 1.30).
