thanks for the luck i'm working on a map.. gunna call it TokaraSwamps but i might not.. and i'm updating this map in a a couple days.. making it a 2 story and i'm going to make it better :)

i was thinking of making it a 2 story map and use warp zones but my warpzones will never work.. i've tryed it 8 times and its starting to piss me off.. could i not use warp zones and do some type of stairs?
any sugestions would b helpfull :)

Whoa, whoa, whoa... guys. Break it up. Heaven forbid you actually hurt each other's feelings. ;P

Vamp... come on, man. This simply cannot be the best you can do. I've found some things I liked and some things I disliked during the 10 minutes spent playing this map; skilled deathmatch, 104 kills, 51 deaths, 20 suicides.

Things I Liked
-The lighting. I'm playing on a computer right next to a window that's driving me mad with glare. I can't play the darker maps on weekend mornings because of this and I kept this in mind while downloading your map. However, you seem to have a handle on the lighting and for that, I applaud you.

-I don't know if this was intentional, but there are little ledges you can sit on inside each box, making for cheap, but also fun, kills. If it was intentional, good job. :P

Things I Disliked
-The layout of the rooms. I'd be strafing my merry way around and keep getting stuck so that I blew myself up with the rocket launcher. This wasn't so bad the first couple times, but it added up. If this was an online game, people would be bitching. I know if I presented this to my friends, they'd be bitching about their suicide count as well. It's not unforgivable, it just can't be forgiven. Know what I mean? ;)

-Not to be anal, but the weapons/ammo are floating. I think you might even get a message about that after you Build All.

-No health/armor? I know rockets are fast killers, but I made it around with 11 hp a good 20 sec really aching for a +5 vial.

-Texture usage. Maybe you could add some grates and sort of make it a maze. That'd be good for annoying people, if nothing else.

My Rating
Concept: 0/10 This can't be the best you can do. It looks like you have a handle on the editor, but boxes and connecting them? Please. :
Gameplay: 7/10 Very enjoyable, except for the parts where I spawned among 7 bots with rocket launchers pointed at me.
Appearance: 2/10 The lighting got you a 2. Everything else is just... fleh. :(
Replayability: 6/10 I'll play this many more times. Placed it in my rotation. :)

15/40 -> 3.5

If anyone thinks that rating is too high, don't bitch at me. I really took some time to figure it and I'm resolute in my decision. Not that I want you to, but if you leave Vamp, don't leave angry, just leave. :(

A cube only map doesn't get you far, trust me.

Use what ut2k3 offers you, don't make a level which at it's base is even worse than any doom 1 level ever made.

redfist, as i've explained earlier to another one's cube first map, you can't make any suggestions to improve it, since it's nothing to work with. You can make a cube and a playerstart in it, unlit, and play it - but you can't say a thing as to how to improve it, since that would make no sense.

Same with this map. The visuals can't be improved, with all the textures in mesehs in the world. It stays a horribly flat map with a tremendously basic architecture, and fluffing up the walls, floors and ceilings won't change that.

Same with the lay-out. In order to improve it, he would ahve to make an entirely new map.

That's why people mostly advise new mappers to NOT release their first maps, because these are the things that represent those. They have to learn the editor, look at other (good) levels, and see how they can create their own style, and how to make a good map, both in visuals and gameplay.

Vampyre, the only constructive criticism i can give you is that you should practice more and compare your work to other maps before releasing anything. Self-criticism is probably the most important part of mapping. Also, don't expect to make a good map within an hour. Take your time, try out things, let others play your levels and see how they like it (as in: not just your closest friends, as they probably don't want to give you negative feedback because "you might not like em anymore")
