REVIEWER'S NOTE:

DM-Assimilation is actually a package containing two Deathmatch maps: DM-DavS-Assimilation and DM-DavS-MeteorStorm, a slightly retouched Assimilation. Due to the overlying similarities between the two maps, all comments made in regards to Assimilation are equally applicable to its sister map.

THE GOOD:

The Theme. Assimilation is set in a desert valley overshadowed by a giant Skaarj complex. The whole area is constructed in a fashion that feels reasonably fresh and appropriately mysterious.

The Music. The custom .ogg file that comes with the map slips easily and comfortably into the retail soundtrack, nicely accentuating the level's atmosphere.

The Gameplay. Assimilation is constructed for large-scale deathmatch play, and in this regard, it pretty much does the job. Weapon selection seems a little sparse at first, but feels about right once you've clocked some playtime. There's enough cover in the surrounding environment to keep things from degenerating into outright spamming, and a little Z-axis gameplay over the mesas.

THE BAD:

Texturing. When dealing with large areas of natural rock, careful texture alignment becomes more critical than ever. Sadly, Assimilation doesn't quite manage to pull it off; visible seams, clashing and misaligned textures abound.

Integration. The "man-made" portions of the map can be divided into three categories: the Skaarj structure, the half-ruined Egyptian statuary, and a small reloading area built out of prefab crates. The latter feels a little out of place and isn't spectacularly well-designed; in hindsight, a landing pad or similar structure might have made the environment feel a little more cohesive.

Short a Few. There's areas where a little additional effort would have been nice. The jump pads cry out for at least a particle effect; the meteor storm in DavS-MeteorStorm is so subtle that it's almost invisible. The level's Z-axis components do the job, but feel like they could benefit from expansion and a little redesign, as most of the gameplay still takes place at ground level.

THE VERDICT:

A generally tidy DM effort.

Every once in a while you run in to a map that you're just impartial to, both versions of this map in the zip file play well one seems to be at night and item placement is different. It's just one of those maps where I don't find anything I like or dislike. I couldn't find anything wrong with it other than the scale seemed a bit large, but game play was fun regardless of it. Just nothing really jumped out at me to make me love or hate it. In a way that's good I guess.

I recommend you download this map and have a look at least because there are some elements in there most will like.

Seems alright. No flaws, but not a very interesting environment.
