Map DescriptionA re-creation of a recent near catastrophe when a freighter ship containing valuable cargo was hijacked in deep-space and its course was adjusted to send it careening towards earth, with all of its precious and highly-explosive cargo. With only a little more than an hour to react, it was decided that a special ops team would fly up along side the freighter and board it via the cargo bay. Then, the team would move through the freighter, input new coordinates at the docks, and complete the manual override at the bridge. This task was made exceptionally hard due to the freighter's emergency onboard defenses now being used against the special ops team.

Author's Comments VERSION 2: Voice acting for intro movie added, but couldn't find a way to get it in for objectives (don't think there is one, email me if you find out how.) Visuals (hopefully) improved, it should look at least decent now. Post comments or email me at Willett2@cox.net Hope you enjoy it!

The short review: A fast assault map that visually is very simplistic, but to its credit is well constructed, with all the assault features in place and good bot support. Needs a makeover but very playable.

The details:

Awe: Ho-Hum. If you were searching for something that would grab your attention, you'd have pretty much skipped over this, and rightfully so. Simple archetcture and layout, a few of the objectives are basically copy-pasted from stock maps and don't really help the fun value because you've done it a hundred times. from an awe perspective, this map can be summed up in a word: Bland. (score: 1.0/3)

Build: While the construction of this map is very simple- the ship you are assaulting is basically one big rectangular prism with some walls to divide it into sections- it is relatively free of errors, the lighting for the most part is sourced ok, though the lighting itself is very bland. Assault technicals: The mapper did a good job here; with a fully narrated intro cenimatic that is done well, and objectives that are sequenced properly, and all work perfectly. The end sequence, while consisting of a little grey box flying away from the bigger grey box that is the ship you just assaulted, is also there and works.
Bots are pathed, and attack and defend all of the objectives reasonably well. (Score: 1.5/3)

Cast: If you can look past the drabness described above, you might enjoy this one. It's short enough that you could play a multiple round game in a reasonable time, It's easy to find your way (if you get lost, shame on you) and is usually decided by who clears the fastest, not who clears it at all. Although it seems the mapper might be trying to justify bland looks with the "I map for gameplay, not eye candy" attitude I see a lot among novice mappers, since this mapper has obviously done his homework, with the nice intro and everything, you might enjoy this map a few times. It is playable, and you might enjoy it a few times. The map just seriously needs an interior decorator to come in and liven up the place. If you don't care about things like that, you might play this one for a few rounds. I urge the mapper to keep up his work, and work on the visuals, because he knows how to make an assault map- just not a very good looking one. (Score: 1.5/3)

I am very impressed. A highly reccomended assault map. Well constructed and orginized, the bots defend and attack well. The assault community needs more of these. If I had any suggestions, it would be to put some more space and some defense in between the final blast doors and the final two objectives. It does not take very long to trigger the switches and the defenders have very little time to rally. Many times I could blow through the doors and flip both switches before the other (human) players had time to regroup. All in all this is a great map. Thanks for your work

antiportal? there arent almost any meshes in that map.
I allready commented on the map @ the forums so i wont go further on this map.

Its a decent first attempt to assault, but compared to the cbp and retail maps, i cant rate this map really high, sorry for that.

Although gameplay is more difficult to get right in assault maps it's really the construction that lets this map down. Generally the map is quite dark and visually it's a bit bland.

Good attempt but below average. This mapper's other work is a cut above this....

Alright this is the final version unless there is some glaring bug... I hope you guys enjoy it. I tried to improve the visuals as best I could, and I got voice acting into the intro, but I couldn't figure out how to put it in for the objectives. Other custom maps seem to have the same problem. If you figure it out or find a custom map that does this, tell me please! Peace.

Edit: Ah yes, looking forward to that review. :)

THE GOOD:

Well, it's solid. As a space-based update of AS-HighSpeed - a generally well-liked classic from UT's glory days - Shipjack has benefit of building on a tried-and-proven foundation. To the author's credit, the map has enough identity to stand on its own and plays respectably. Botplay is generally competent and efficient, though the setup seems to be slightly biased in favor of the attackers.

THE BAD:

Bland Architecture. Most of the freighter is large, blocky and empty at once, with only a smattering of prefabs to spice things up; the freighter itself is little better than an grey-colored lozenge with an engine glow. The environment lacks both detail and depth, particularly when compared to the nearest retail equivalent, AS-Mothership, or even the recently-released AS-Jumpship. As a result, battling your way through the ship is never quite as satisfying as it should be.

The Emergency Power Core. More specifically, the LSD-inspired floor effects around the objective, which make the entire area seriously disorienting.

THE VERDICT:

Rough-around-the-edges update of a classic UT map. More time and polish could make this one to watch out for.

UPDATE:

Version 2 of Shipjack adds some minor improvements, including a little more environmental detail, a slightly refined - but still terminally drab - freighter model and voice acting for the briefing. In light of this, rating has been increased from its previous score of 5.5 to 6.

A Review Is Coming. :)

To add voices to your objectives, look in the properties for your objective actors- I don't remember which section right at this second but I'll have that for you in a bit.

As far as I can tell there is no way to add between-objective voices. I tried it in my own map AS-Acatana and the game simply doesn't like them.

I'm a total mapping n00b, but maybe if you create the objective voices as custom sounds, it might work. Then you have to use a trigger to make the sound play when the objective is fulfilled. This ios easy ifthe objective invloves entering a specific location, but I don't know how to get this done otherwise.

Seems to be an alright map, I like the very start bit... Could do with some work but it's fully playable.

Good gameplay, lacklustre graphics. Hopefully the Mapper continues making AS Maps, with some attention to detail this Map could have been great.
