| whisper 08-28-2004 09:35 PM MDT | Rating: 5.5 | | The custom content in this map is simply amazing to behold. It's a very funny map that never takes itself seriously.
However, if you're looking for gameplay, I found it to be very mediocre. In my opinion, there are too many objectives that take thirty seconds to complete and offer no real gameplay value. The end I found to be just the opposite, a spamfest that will most likely suck down any remaining time.
Great if you get a kick out of checking out the custom content (and who wouldn't in a map like this), but not so great if you're looking for good gameplay. At least that was my experience with bots.
| Moriyosi 08-30-2004 11:41 AM MDT | Rating: 7 | | THE GOOD
Originality. A crack team of disgruntled drinkers takes to the weapons lockers when their local watering hole's beer supply is replaced with alcohol-free booze substitute. Say what you will, but that's a premise you're not going to run into too often these days.
Execution. For what is essentially a one-joke map, ONS-Outback is almost shockingly well-made; custom textures abound, while herds of kangaroos populate the level's highways and byways, scattering as the players approach with all guns blazing. The action culminates in a final, hectic showdown in the Zero Beer Brewery, where players battle through a fully-functional bottling line; a piece of UEd trickery that sits nicely among more subtle touches like the beer cartons surrounding the various weapon emplacements and the skinned 'roos drying out behind the bar.
THE BAD
Objective Setup. Gameplay is disappointingly uneven; players start too close to certain objectives, making the early phases of the map far too easy. The final shootout in the Zero Beer Brewery suffers from the opposite problem, with close quarters and a relentless stream of defenders turning success into a matter of luck and attrition.
THE VERDICT
Nicely made and wryly humorous, AS-Outback is one of the better third-party Assault entries to emerge since UT2k4's release. The gimmicky theme might not appeal to everybody, but there are worse ways to spend your bandwidth.
| lordsimeon 09-01-2004 08:03 PM MDT | | thanks for the good comments, i spent a great deal longer than i wanted to just detailing stuff. The gameplay can get a bit spammy at the end, but i wanted to keep with the storyline of the map. I spent ages on the intro too, with me and my mate having "way too many" and doing the voice over for it. The rest of the guys who did the roo, graphics and skybox really complimented to the map to bring it into polished state :)

| VejOut 04-25-2005 08:04 PM MDT | Rating: 8 | | Like it, great textures and atmosphere. I belong to a sniper clan and we would like to convert this map to a DM style for sniping, but want your permission to do it first! I hope you still visit these forums!
