Here is a map that begs to be played. CTF-Glacier is another fine effort by Some. Get your download started then read on to see what's in store.
Well, I'm impressed! The bases are set in a huge glacier with cold wind whistling all around you as you cross one of two bridges (one above the other) that join the bases. The map is symmetric, the buildings are complex, and a well-orchestrated plan may be your only hope for a win. With 6-10 players, this map sees a lot of action. You can take a direct route from one base to the other, which really isn't all that direct, or you can wind around and work your way up from below to score a point. Both ways are challenging since the bots use up the entire map.
The bases are full of concrete, rusty steel, wood, beams, see-through grating, water, lava, and an open, starry, moon-filled sky above the flags and at the bridges. "Some" really did a great job with the eye candy on this one while keeping the framerates quite good. I see one small spot with a very brief slowdown, and that is when you emerge from a base to use the lower bridge to cross the glacier crevasse. This should only affect very slow systems, and it's only a small percentage of the map.
The bots worked very well as a team. I had a blast on about every flag return, but one return stands out: I had carefully loaded up on armor and health, then sneaked my way up to the flag via the lower bridge. I made a mad dash for the flag and had to fight off two bots right away. I hopped down to take the long way back and had to kill 3 more bots along the way, and barely returned the flag with "2" health showing; thanks in part to some fine teamwork by my colors. The bots will translocate for a vantage point, defend at these cool sniper posts, and they reach every weapon on the map, no matter how isolated it may be. This brings me to another point: The item placement makes you work for the better items. This created a welcome challenge. Health and powerups are also planned out very well.
The lighting is mostly white, except in a few places. There are some nice lighting contrasts, nice light fixtures; all the stuff one needs to be immersed in the game. If you want more, you've got it! Yes, sounds everywhere, and some music for those who can't live without it. |

| SirRed | Rating: 9 | | Beautiful UT level with multiple paths to the flag. Nice looking bridges too. Only 1 thing that keeps this level from making it a 9.5 to a 10 for me is that I don't like levels that you can fall off of to your death. A superb job of texturing and a very very nice level. :D
