This is a nice UT2k4 version of the classic UT99 map. Unlike the UT2k3 version, this is very close to the original layout and style (as far as I can remember). Since this was one of my favorite CTF maps, I appreciate the conversion.

O.k. clonage. The textures and lighting used on the forts are really well done.
In my opinion this mapper's original work is better. Average....

This is a direct port, nothing more. I'd like to see a lavagiant that looks better than this on this engine but isnt all messed up like the UT2003 map was. Neutral rating for credit being given where credit is due. Not keeping, because I still have UT.

Effort was made for sure, just look at the damn lava! The classic still felt better though, don't know why

A decent port but could of used some visual improvements. Just don't really feel this map plays very well on UT2004 however, especially with the limited translocator.
Still, it is only a port and not a drastic improvement over the original.

Only one question to SpoonDog:
When will JB-LavaGiant for UT2004 be released? And please don´t say, your ain´t working on it!!!
|
redfist 09-28-2004 01:01 AM MDT | |
I did not play it,but i'm giving it a 10 because of all the port no port blah blah blah. It's much harder to redo a map than make one from scratch. It's very hard to do because we KNOW what to EXPECT from the old level. look at all the mappage this dude has done !!!.............................
Now hold on a minute,I'm confused, didn't fordy do this map too? No wait...it's this one http://nalicity.beyondunreal.com/map_hub.php?mid=7104

Heh, i mistook this map for another remake of LavaGiant i played some time ago.... Sorry for the misunderstanding.
This map is quite good, though it could have been better at some places.
First, the skybox is a bit too chaotic, i counted 3 planets in a very close vicinity to each other, the animated green effect in the top is simply annoying, and the rotation is something that shouldn't be done. Lavagiant takes place on, as the name says, a giant planet of lava. It doesn't rotate (that fast, at least not noticably like this). I think a stationary skybox with less effects looks better than this one. Maybe take a look at LavaGiant2's skybox, that one would fit better i think, be it a bit darker.
Also, the lava effects are too large imo. Make them a bit smaller to let them fit better in the map. They look like they're a part of the skybox when they aren't. The lava effects in the pools enclosed by the terrain should definetely be smaller, by a lot. It looks rather weird, those huge geysers not even scratching the supports.
The terrain itself has a corny look, somehow. I think it looks a bit too white for some reason. Good thing however is that the texture doesn't look like it's repeating itself.
The red base is still a bit too overpowered and too well protected when compared to the blue base. I'd duplicate the blue base and give it the look the red base has, and you could change it a bit to make it stand alone. As it is now the red base is just too difficult when compared to the blue.
I like this remake, though it could have been better. I can't shake the ut99 feeling despite the updated looks, and for some reason, that's bad. I think it's mostly because of the bland lighting of the walking surface of the terrain.
The redeemer cave could have been a lot darker too, with just the lava as a light source and some particle effects sprouting from below. The lighting looks just too bright, and the flames are too "large".
This one is a bit less good as your other maps..... imho
Again, sorry for the misunderstanding earlier :P

Right, thought something must've gone wrong there. I appreciate the comments now you're talking about the right map ;)
Keep in mind though I would never duplicate the blue base even if it is biased towards one team, because then it's not LG-Classic! Same reason I kept the whitish cliffs with the charred grey surface too. Though you're right about the sky probably rotating a bit fast, just thought I'd put a different twist without altering the atmosphere & gameplay there.
Map also plays exactly like the original in terms of bots & tactics, except the bots use it a bit better than in UT1 (just a fluke, I didn't do anything special)

The original was fun but I never had as much fun on it as most. I applaud your attention to detail to keep this as close to the original as possible. The only thing I would've like to see is a little more 2k4 updates. The bases and lava all look pretty good but the middle ground tends to look a bit more like UT than it should. Not the routes mind you, but the boxi-squarish bsp.
I was actually a bit fond of the 2k3 DE version and would like to see it reappear. Personally, I didn't see much similar to the UT version except outside base -> land bridges -> inside midfield -> land bridges -> outside base. It was just another map to play and I liked it. Even the strategies were completely different.

Still has what it takes. Bots seem a bit predictable, only using a certain path unless there is a powerup on one of the others. Not as good as the original but still the best remake on Nali City. Recomended download, especialy if you like the old one.
